Capturing head bobs with a cue!
I used to be hesitant about training animals to perform tricks, believing it wasnโt natural. But now I see that animals can only do what theyโre physically capable of, so the โtricksโ we teach them can actually be natural for them too.
Instead of calling it a trick, I prefer to think of it as a game. Once your dog realizes they can earn a treat by learning something new, youโll find they become more eager to engage and interact.
Give this simple trick a try with your dog, and let me know how it goes!

Emily
Emily is a regular visitor; she comes to us for boarding or daycare every now and then. Recently, her owner needed some time off and asked if I could help train Emily during her stay.
I noted the challenges the owner faced and started working on them as soon as Emily arrived, knowing I had her for less than a week.
Emily has a habit of picking up things from the floor to eat and often doesnโt respond to her ownerโs recall. The owner is concerned that she might ingest something harmful and get sick. So during Emilyโs board and train, we focused on the โleave itโ command.
Here are the results after some time: she is beginning to understand the command, but you can see she hesitates a little. This hesitation is partly because the treat Iโm using is the same kibble she eats regularly. To make the command more effective, itโs essential to use different treats in various scenarios. For example, a dog is more likely to choose cheese on the floor over kibble in your hand. To address this, we need a higher-value reinforcer.
Since the food on the floor is the same kibble Iโm offering Emily, can you guess how I managed to get her to โleave itโ and come to me instead?

Clicker helps the trainer to capture the learnerโs natural behavior and mark it. It is an effective tool to communicate with your learner if conditioned properly.
Do you know which behavior I am trying to capture here ?

Amber
Amberโs parents reached out to me while I was on my way home, asking for help with training their puppy, as they were first-time pet owners. I was thrilled to assist them, as I always encourage owners to train their pups themselves; after all, theyโll be the ones with them for the long haul.
After a brief phone conversation, we arranged an assessment at their home for the following evening.
When I arrived, Amber seemed a bit confused by my presence, but she quickly warmed up to me after a few moments of observation.
Her enthusiasm was incredible! We could barely have a conversation because Amber was jumping around, eager to explore everything.
I decided to start clicker training with her. Amber is a quick learner; she picked up the meaning of the clicker in no time and was soon working for treats. Within just five minutes, she had already learned the command โoff.โ
Amberโs parents mentioned they were planning to travel soon and needed a place to board her. I offered them a two-week doggy school program, and here is Amber after those two weeks.

When you teach your dog a new behavior at home, itโs doesnโt mean that they will comply outdoors, and that has always make the owners wonder. The answer is simple, you dog is just distracted in an over stimulated environment. Grass, scooters, bikes, children running, carsโฆ the list goes on. Try to reduce the stimulant down to one and try again. You will see what I mean.
Duke is now being trained at our new venue at @shashas_haven therefore we are doing a quick recap for him, and just like all dogs, Duke required some guidance at the starts regardless he have done the behavior thousand times at home.

Technically everyone can learn how to train their own dog as long they do enough research, be consistent with their training, and of course not give up when encounter failure. You will be surprise the trial and error you will go through with your puppy. Donโt worry, you just havenโt find the right way to communicate to each other yet.
Although there are many resource that you can access online, but it can be misleading sometimes to the people who watch as there are a lot more steps that you need to make before reaching the final goal and they donโt show it.
I always will encourage people to learn to train their own dog, it is fun and rewarding. But seeking help from a professional guidance can alway help you avoid the unnecessary mistakes and frustration.

Come
Have an un-negotiable recall is very important, your dog should come right back to you when you ask, this can save your dog from many incident.
No
No is not an actual command that you ask your dog to do but it is rather a command to you ask your dog to rethink the behavior you asked for.
Heel
Teaching your dog to heel besides you during the walk can reinforce the safety of the off leash walk. On top of that, you will be in more control of your dog when you encounter a reactive situation.
Stay
Stay is an implied command after โsitโor โdownโ or โplaceโ, and this teaches your dog to not spring back into action right away but wait for your next command.
Sit/Down/Place
Sitting down is probably the first common you would teach your dog naturally; โsitโโdownโ and โplaceโ are commands is helpful when you want to refrain your dog from moving temporarily and have the dog focus on you.
Leave it
Dogs are super curious with their environment and would want to explore with their nose their eyes their ears and their mouth. Lots of things on the floor that are very tempting for a taste so teach your dog to โleave itโ to prevent potential health hazard.

The command โGOโ is to release your dog from a refraining behavior like stay, it is important to let your dog know that there is an end to the command, and he gets to explore the world on its own at some point.

5 things you need to know before training a dog. #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainer #dogtraining
1. Write your goal down
Writing your goal down before training helps revise and review your plan. you want to start by writing what you want to achieve at the bottom of the paper and the closest behavior at the top, in the middle, you want to fill in the baby steps to achieve you ultimate goal.
2.Set the room up for success.
Make the room as easy as possible for your dog to read to avoid confusion. If it gets too complicated, they tend to loose interest and you will have end up frustrated too.
3.Build trust and you will get your respect.
Building trust is essential in dog training as you a scared or fearful dog will never take your treat just like we are taught not to get candy offered by stranger. Think of the relationship as your interaction with the bank. The more good credit you put in to the bank and they will more likely to offer you more benefits and vice verse bad credit will only get you cold shoulder and avoidance.
4.Being Consistent is the key to a successful training
The most important rule of all is to be consistent, dogs like routine, they like things that they are familiar with and manageable. When they have their confidence they tend try more things without getting frustration.
5.Seek professional help
Yes there are plenty of dog training tips and demonstration videos online, but every dog have different personality and preference. Most of the time you failed in your training is because you followed exactly what you saw on the video. A professional trainer can always visit your dog and come up with a tailored plan for them.
