Dear Dog Parents !
I need YOUR help !!
Hi, my name is Dr Katrin Jahn and I am in the final stages of a residency to specialise in Veterinary Behaviour Medicine. As part of this, I have to conduct a research project and I have chosen a topic very close to my heart - AIR TRAVEL IN PETS !
If your dog has traveled by air in the last 12 months, I'd love to hear about their unique experience and how they coped with air travel.
Please take part in my survey (around 20 minutes) and help us improve our current knowledge of how dogs cope with air travel and ultimately help us improve pet welfare in this sector !
All participants will receive a FREE PDF with my top tips on air travel in pets.
To access the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/dogairtravel
or scan the QR code in the picture !
⭐️PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE ! This is an international study so if you know ANYONE whose dog has traveled by air in the last 12 months, please share this post with them or tag them below! ⭐️
Thank you so much, everyone, for your support ❤️

Collaboration is so important to me.
We should be - need to be - collaborating with other veterinary professionals and specialists, trainers, physiotherapists, the patient’s family and possibly so many more in order to achieve good outcomes for our patients.
And, let’s face it, that’s what we all want – improvements in health, both physical and mental/emotional – for our patients.

The days are over where we all try to solve these difficult cases on our own, we have to start working together and supporting and lifting each other up to help our patients get the help and care they deserve!

This is one of my FAVOURITE resources ever!!
The Stahl’s psychopharmacology Prescriber’s Guide.
Even though this is a human psychopharmacology resource, it is so valuable for us in Veterinary Behaviour Medicine as it provides an at-a-glance guide to the majority of psychopharmaceutical medications commonly used in human medicine and therefore also in veterinary medicine.

It is easy to use and provides so many pearls of wisdom.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in Veterinary Psychiatry and Veterinary Behaviour Medicine!

Have you ever wondered what a Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan looks like?
Well, no 2 treatment plans are ever quite the same as they are tailored to each individual patient and family, however, the pillars of the treatment plans are mostly the same for each patient.

🌟GAME CHANGER🌟
I have found Sileo (oral dexmedetomidine gel) to be an absolute game changer in many situations and scenarios. It is licensed for noise phobias and noise aversion in dogs but can be helpful in other stressful scenarios too.

Dexmedetomidine is a highly potent and selective alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist and targets the noradrenaline neurotransmitter system which initiates in the locus coeruleus of the brain. High levels or noradrenaline cause increased fight, flight and freeze responses and may manifest in arousal, attentiveness, hypervigilance and can cause the development of anxiety over time.

Sileo provides a low dose of dexmedetomidine which calms but does not sedate the dog, making it a really useful tool!

I love this book by Bear & Paradiso – it accompanied me all through my Australia & New Zealand Membership exams, that I took last year.

Neuroscience and neuroanatomy are such important pieces when it comes to Veterinary Behaviour Medicine as the brain is probably the organ we think about most. Of course, we consider all aspects of physical health, but the brain plays a huge part in behaviour so knowing as much as possible about the brain helps up make diagnoses and consider effective treatment plans.

Hugely recommended to anyone wanting to dive deeper into this fascinating field !!

I love being able to treat my patients as individuals and really being able to consider their individual needs, whether those are physical, breed specific, social, environmental or brain health needs.
Having a 2-hour consultation slot gives me the time to do this – get a really thorough history, spend time with the patient and their families to really understand what is important to everyone.

Not having to rush and really taking that time is hugely fulfilling and sets us up to creating a solid treatment plan tailored to each individual patient.

Sertraline is a psychopharmaceutical in the SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) family of medications.

It can be used to treat a number of behaviour problems and mental/emotional health disorders and is especially good for panic and generalised anxiety disorder.
But how do you know when to choose sertraline over another SSRI such as fluoxetine, for example, or which cases NOT to use an SSRI in?

There are SO many calming supplements on the market so how do you know which ones actually work?
I think there are 2 really important aspects to consider when thinking about choosing a supplement to treat mental health disorders:

1. What active ingredients are in the supplements (some supplements have only one active ingredient and some have a combination of a few different active ingredients) and how do these active ingredients effect the neurochemistry in the brain – how do they actually work?

2. How severe is the mental health disorder you are trying to treat and is a supplement good enough to match this severity or do you need to consider a psychopharmaceutical instead?

Zylkene has a single active ingredient – alpha-casozepine and works on the GABA (Gamma-amino-butyric-acid) Neurotransmitter system, thereby having a calming effect on the patient.

Here is part 3 of “Why I love my job”.

I LOVE all things psychopharmacology, and this is a really big part of the Clinical Veterinary Behaviour work that I am now mainly involved with.

Seeing a patient’s mental and emotional health improve and seeing them be calmer, happier, more relaxed, more joyful, more playful, more interactive with their families fills me with immense joy.

It is NEVER our aim to turn a patient into a “Zombie”, which is unfortunately what so many people think psychopharmaceuticals do. This is almost never the case and if it should be the case, then that particular medication was not right for the patient, and we have to think again.

This is why I keep extremely close contact with any patients that I start on psychopharmaceutical medication, checking in with them every 24-48 hours in the first 2 weeks of medication, when side effects can be expected

I LOVE this brand new-ish “Veterinary Psychiatry” textbook (2020), edited by Veterinary Behaviourist Sagi Denenberg.
I love the fact that it is called “Veterinary Psychiatry”, because that is what most of us working in the field of Veterinary Behaviour Medicine actually are – the equivalents in a professional sense to human psychiatrists.

The fact that we, as vets, are able to consider and examine both the pet’s physical as well as mental and emotional health is so very important as physical health is HUGELY important when it comes to behaviour problems and behavioural presentations.

Vets should ALWAYS be involved in behavioural presentations at some stage – preferably at the beginning of a case work-up – so that we can identify potential physiological contributing factors, as, without addressing these, unwanted behaviours are unlikely to improve.

Psychopharmaceutical medication use is ALL about neurotransmission.
Knowing how psychopharmaceuticals work in the brain, which neurotransmitter systems are targeted and how we can positively affect these neurotransmitters is the cornerstone of psychopharmaceutical use.
This knowledge informs our choices, which patients and presentations to use which medication for, which patients NOT to use a specific medication for, how psychopharmaceuticals may interact with other medications and what side effects and contra-indications we should consider.

Here’s part 2 of “Why I love my job”

I wanted to be a vet since I can remember and my earliest memory of this is following the vet around the stables when he came to visit a horse when I was maybe 13 years old. Everything fascinated me – the stethoscope, the injections, the vets themselves, how it made me feel to think that they were helping an animal – all of it!
I just can’t imagine doing anything else and I know how lucky I am to be able to say this !

Why do YOU love doing what you do? Would you have chosen a different path if you had that choice to make again or are you choosing a new path that you love now?

It can be used to treat a number of behaviour problems and mental/emotional health disorders such as Separation Anxiety, Compulsive Disorders, Fears and Phobias and more.

YuCalm contains L-Theanine, a green tea derivative, which works by affecting the GABA/Glutamate Neurotransmitter system, thereby having a calming effect on the patient.

RECONCILE !!
This veterinary formulation of fluoxetine came out in the UK market in November 2021
and has been a GAME CHANGER for me !

Fluoxetine is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) which has both short term
and long term effects on serotonergic neurotransmission in the brain.

I use fluoxetine for patients showing fear & anxiety, compulsive behaviours, high arousal
and irritability and aggressive behaviours as a result of the above.
It is important to identify potential contributingphysical medical factors FIRST, but it is possible that
a psychopharmaceutical is indicated even if other physical factors are found, alongside
the treatment for those factors.

Do you want to know more about psychopharmaceuticals, their indications and their effects in
dogs and cats?

Stay tuned for my webinar coming in September - suitable for vets, pet care professionals and
pet owners alike !

MOUNTING...

Such a complex behaviour and one I get asked many questions about...

It is, of course, a normal canine behaviour, however, when seen out of the context of mating/procreation, it can be difficult to interpret.

Both male AND female dogs can show mounting behaviour.

They can mount objects, people or each other.

It is usually NOT to do with "dominance" (a word we don't use in the context of canine behaviour anymore - the dominance theory was disproven quite a few decades ago now !!!)

It IS often to do with emotional state and is often seen in the context of dogs trying to manage social relationships.

It may be a sign that the social contact or engagement in that moment is not comfortable, too rough, too intense, too scary. It may be a means of increasing distance and stopping the social contact.

It could also be a sign of hyperarousal, risk taking or stress relief... many possibilities...

Which is why it is important to evaluate each case individually and look at the behaviours in context - when do they show up, how do they show up, around whom do they show up and when do they not show up?

What behaviours do you find difficult to interpret?

Let us know!!

Air travel is stressful for our pets, whether they are dogs, cats, horses or other species.

Preparing pets for air travel is an area I specialise in.

GVC’s Pet Relocation Service sends around 250 pets by air every year to all corners of the globe and we have made stress management throughout this process (of both the pets and their pet parents 🤭) an absolute priority!
There are SO many things that can be done to reduce stress during air travel and I provide a custom made stress management plan for each global traveller !

Let me know if you have questions about air travel in pets !!

Behaviour change happens in small steps. Sure, sometimes we can effect bigger changes by implementing management and medication but long lasting Behaviour modification happens step by small step !

Small steps often noted by my clients:
🐾The pet becomes more affectionate
🐾The pet looks for physical touch and interaction
🐾The pet becomes more playful
🐾The pet sleeps and rests more
🐾The pet has better quality sleep

These are all huge wins even if they seem small steps- they are laying the foundations for further behaviour change to occur !

What small wind have you noticed in your pet ?
