Meet Toffee 😍

Toffee is recovering from a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) surgery, a heart surgery performed by and 🫀.

PDA is a heart defect that occurs when the ductus arteriosus does not close at birth. Symptoms commonly seen are shortness of breath, coughing, weakness abdominal exercise intolerance.

When this surgery is performed before heart failure develops, the prognosis for a normal long and healthy life after surgery is excellent.

Dr Cristina , our veterinary neurologist, shares that’s seizures are one of the most commonly reported symptoms in the patients she sees. However a large proportion of these pets are not in fact having seizures , they are having episodes of Paroxysmal Dyskinesia, essentially cramps/spasms in their limbs and body.

Dr Rami performed a Laparoscopic spay on this beautiful Great Dane.

By performing the surgery laparoscopically, the procedure is performed through small incisions in the abdomen. A laparoscope (camera) magnifies the internal structures of the abdomen on a TV monitor, allowing for greater surgical precision and fewer complications.

Post operative recovery is usually quicker as there is no need for stitches removal, medical cones, or post operative anti-inflammatory medication.

✨Success story ✨

This adorable pug puppy was diagnosed with Atlantoaxial Instability. This is a rare condition where there is abnormal movement in the neck between the first two cervical vertebrae. This instability can cause compression of the spinal cord.

Depending on the severity of the compression, symptoms can vary in severity from neck pain to incoordination, weakness and even paralysis from the neck down in severe cases.

Dr Roy and Dr Marta performed a spinal surgery to stabilize the vertebrae. After only a few days, this pup is back on his feet and walking around with no neck pain!

Dr Roy and Dr Rami performed a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) surgery, saving the life of Paloma, the puppy.

Paloma was born with a congenital heart defect, where a fetal vessel did not close properly after birth.

Paloma was first brought to the clinic for a general health check where a heart murmur was noticed, and she was referred to our Cardiologist Dr Wasseem for a cardiac scan that identified the cause of the problem.

Without this surgery, most dogs with a PDA, experience congestive heart failure within 2-3 years.

Dr Roy and Dr Cristina performed a Hemilaminectomy at L1/L2 for a French Bulldog that came in to the clinic as an emergency, struggling to walk, with reduced proprioception in his hind legs. A Hemilaminectomy is a spinal surgery used in dogs to correct slipped or herniated discs in the spine.

The surgery went extremely well, our patient is back on his feet and walking just days after the surgery 😍.

The biggest difference between the two is your dog will undergo one large abdominal incisions in a traditional spay. Whereas, in a laparoscopic spay there are two small incisions. A traditional spay requires a 2-4 inch long incisions. Compare that to a lap spay that requires two separate incisions that are each only one-fifth-inch to two-fifth-inches long. You can see why laparoscopy is considered less invasive. Your dog benefits from a laparoscopic spay compared to a traditional spay in the following ways: 🐶Lowered post-op pain. 🐶Less bruising at surgical site. 🐶Less trauma to organs. 🐶Fewer complications from surgery. 🐶Enhanced ability for veterinarian to note other problems. The post-operative recovery is usually much easier and less painful on a patient who has had a laparoscopic spay. Heat is the most common cause of panting in cats. However, cats do not pant as easily as dogs on a hot day, so if your cat is panting, you need to help her cool down as soon as possible. A panting cat is likely already very overheated. Move them to a dark, cool room in your home with an air conditioner, a fan, or both. Let your cat rest and try to cool down.
