We are often asked why didn’t the blood test pick up the cancer? Until now there hasn’t been a reliable early screening test. We are delighted to have this new in-house test to help with early diagnosis of some easily treatable cancers.

The Nu.Q Vet Cancer Test detects 7 common canine cancers and is minimally invasive. Learn more about this affordable cancer screening test from IDEXX.

Congratulations to Dr Malcolm and Dr Charlene for their 18 month commitment to intensive study and coursework and obtaining their Certificates in Ultrasound - CertGP(US). What does this mean? They have had rigorous training and testing in abdominal, muscular and cardiothoracic ultrasound which allows them to have advanced diagnostic skills. We are delighted for them and are happy to accept referral ultrasound procedures from our colleagues and clients.

Take your child to work day -Jamie came to see us in action and spent the morning fetching, carrying, helping hold patients, cleaning carriers (of unmentionable stuff) and learning how to scale and polish teeth! He named me a superhero - not for the work I do - but because I stand all day and am still alive at the end of it 😂😂. His legs & back were killing him after 2 hours!

Today we found one of our ‘stray’ kittens dead on the road. 😭😭😭😭😭another had injuries consistent with a car accident. Heartbreaking for us all.
There is a reason we beg people not to feed them. We continually find food on the sidewalk or near the road. Please don’t dump others here. We have a ‘stable’ population who are all looked after and fed very well at the BACK of the hospital so that they stay away from the road. They are part of our hospital smartflow system and they all get looked after and managed. If you want to help strays consider contributing to other groups.

There are so many helpful DNA tests that test for specific diseases in specific breeds - carrier status, clear or affected. For example Maine Coone and Dobermann heart diseases, German shepherd neurological degeneration…. But the most wanted test is to identify what breeds make up our special crossbreeds. Sadly it doesn’t appear that we are there yet….

Several companies now offer services to sequence Fido’s genetic information—but how do they really work?

Brachycephalic breeds don’t deserve to live their whole life suffering. Such wonderful personalities that struggle to breathe every day. Humans did this, and humans can undo it. Let’s start at ground zero and breed responsibly, and let the demand for proper dog structure rehabilitate the breed. Please think carefully before choosing a Brachy breed (and cats are included).

Happy Caturday (rescue version)! Misty looking floofalicious - she was a flu-ridden, anaemic 400g kitten who was found with a gigantic abscess on her head in Nov 2008. A testament to the hard work everyone put into saving her life - and a little 2 year holiday in Sweden also helped ;)

A new study by researchers at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has been investigating the different types of facial expressions cats use to communicate with each other.

The team recorded 276 unique different facial expressions from the cats they studied - by comparison, chimpanzees have around 357 different facial expressions.

They also found that cats have some expressions in common with humans, and may have picked them up from their 10,000 year history living with us!
