Street cleaners won't allow any straw to be used to keep the strays warm because it's "litter", yet the country is full of stray dogs that are freezing. Any ideas on how we can keep them warm? We're knitting wool blankets that we'll add more lanolin to for water resistance.

Did you know that there are currently two puppy mill bills in Congress that would drastically change the lives of dogs living in puppy mills across the country? Below you will find a quick breakdown of each bill and, more importantly, links so you can contact your US Senators and Representatives to ask them to support these bipartisan bills.

* The Puppy Protection Act would provide necessary updates to the Animal Welfare Act, which are regulations that all USDA licensees must follow. These regulations have not been updated since 1966.

* Goldie's Act would require the USDA to provide more meaningful inspections, confiscate animals that are suffering and cross-report violations with local law enforcement and licensing agencies.

Our latest educational project had two components 1) educate about stray animals and encourage teens to be kind to them, discuss the importance of spay/neuter of strays as well as pets and myth busting related to spay/neuter and 2) educate about the environmental impacts of plastic waste, the importance of planting trees and not tossing garbage on the streets (which is a common issue in Armenia) and allowing teens to plant veggies of their choosing to give them a chance to cultivate something of their own and (hopefully) develop a desire to plant more.

A big thank you to film critic and our good friend Diana Martirosyan for leading the discussions and choosing the most impactful films, Resource Center for Women's Empowerment for helping us reach the young adults of Hrazdan region and the Merlene siblings for their generous contribution.

Reese is back and looking for her forever home.
To meet her is to love her! Reese is a cheeky little social butterfly with the most distinctive ears! This springy, spirited lady has plenty of fun energy to go around. She has lots of fun getting out and about on walks or sampling toys during play time, and you'll be impressed as she goes from zero to zoomies in no time flat! But when it's time to settle down, she positively melts into your lap. She is a huge lovebug who enjoys getting up close and personal for her cuddles and kisses. Reese is an engaging mix of active, silly, and affectionate. She is estimated to be 8 months old and weighs 45 lbs.

Winter days are here, which means more calls about near frozen puppies found on the streets of Armenia are also upon us.
While bracing for the brutal images and stories we want to also celebrate the ones that do find happily ever afters. was one of those puppies that was near death call. While running errands our volunteer passed by where he was and heard his cries. He was near frozen, alone and hungry. She took him in and called to tell us all about the circumstances. After vet visits and shots we patiently waited for his humans to find him. About 5 months later they came and could not have been a better match. Today, LB is living his best life in Toronto and has put his rough start behind him. He loves playing in the snow and is the in-house expert of puppy-dog-eyes.

We have some amazing news to share!

About two weeks ago Luna found her forever home. It was a bittersweet moment for us, but we decided to hold off celebrating until some time passed and she was settled in her new home.

Luna has been through a lot in the past year, and when she found herself back in our care we knew that her then-current state was beyond what we could have handled on our own. She had been given an unfair assessment and essentially a death sentence by a “trainer” that could not have done any more things wrong. We reached out to many breed specific rescues for trainer referrals and advice, but found out that if a dog is an international rescue many local rescues are not interested in helping. Fortunately, we met Isabel from who put us in touch with Kian and Terese from . Kian and Terese took in Luna right away and not only helped us save her life for the second time, but also found her an amazing home where she has a floppy eared sibling just like herself and a momma that understands the needs of her breed. They helped her decompress and start proper training as well as feel safe. They took excellent care of her and made sure that she would be ready to find her new and forever home.

Sometimes it takes a village to help out just one dog and we are so grateful for everyone that fought for her, helped her and us. We could not have dreamt of a better outcome for this sweet soul. We wish her many happy days full of zoomies and love.

THANK YOU ALL FOR BELIEVING IN LUNA, FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.

GROUNDBREAKING NEWS: The Alberta Court of Appeal officially recognizes that animals are sentient beings AND that animal cruelty is a crime of violence!🎉

This ground-breaking decision is proof that times are changing. Animals are highly vulnerable to mistreatment and exploitation and are incapable of communicating their suffering, and sentences for animal cruelty must reflect these realities.

The court held that “Animals [are] sentient beings that experience pain and suffering [and] must be treated as living victims [….] “animal cruelty is a crime of violence”

Yesterday, the Alberta court of appeal recognized:

- that it is the animal’s experience of the violence, pain and suffering during and after the event that is relevant.
- that not every contravention of the animal cruelty provisions will be a crime of physical violence; crimes of neglect can be equally serious
- the Violence Link - that the abuse or killing of an animal can be motivated by a desire to assert control over or exact revenge on another person

Humane Canada™ provides essential education to prosecutors across Canada to raise awareness, encourage collaboration and highlight legislative and policy amendments that bring about lasting and systemic change. We have been following and sharing insights about the R v Chen case closely.

🚨URGENT FOSTERS, FUNDS AND SUPPLIES NEEDED🚨

The events of this past weekend have left the rescue community reeling. A tragic incident that left a child in the hospital fighting for their life and dozens of innocent dogs dead was a painful reminder that Canada has a serious dog problem - one that isn’t going away no matter how many dogs rescues can intake.

The Canadian government has turned its back on Indigenous communities and the north, and chronic policy failure and inaction has set into motion a systemic domino effect that puts humans and animals into desperate situations.

Lack of access to basic resources and services that we take for granted in the GTA is part of Canada’s legacy in the North. Unless political leadership steps up to start addressing dog overpopulation as the urgent public safety risk that it is, there is no end in sight to the terrible situations that communities are confronted with when dogs begin to pack up for the winter. The temperature drops, food becomes scarce, dogs are fighting to survive, and children have been harmed when these tense dynamics reach a boiling point. This leaves a community to respond without any options, and the outcome is devastating for all involved.

To assist our Manitoba rescue partners with an emergency supplies run and dog intake, we are teaming up with some local Ontario rescues and appealing to our rescue network for your support. We are in need of fosters for incoming dogs, funds for medical needs and transport, and supplies to re-stock the front line rescues working directly within the communities.

Supplies Needed:
🐾Dog food (dry and canned)
🐾Cat food (dry and canned)
🐾Cat litter
🐾Puppy p*e pads
🐾Transport crates

Please email [email protected] if you have a foster home or supplies to share, or find our gofundme link below to donate. Thank you for your continued support on these lifesaving initiatives, we truly could not do our rescue work without you! 🐾 💛

A TALE ABOUT TAILS
A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog.
It’s commonly believed that a waggy tail means a happy dog, but that isn’t always the case. Whether it’s long, short, curly or straight, the tail is a very important communication tool.
Before we try to learn the language of a tail, it’s important to recognise that the neutral or natural position of a dog’s tail differs between breeds. Beagles may naturally hold their tails pointing straight up, while Greyhounds and Whippets, naturally look like their tail is held between their legs. Pugs and Bostons have tails that coil up against their back and may not wag at all.
A wag to the right generally indicates that dogs are happy or excited, while a wag to the left is usually from uncertainty, fear anxiety or other negative feelings. This makes sense from a neurological point of view because each side of a dog's brain controls opposite sides of his body. The left side of the brain controls emotions like love and attachment while the right-side controls feelings like fear or anxiety. So, when a dog is happy the left side of the brain causes the tail to wag right and when a dog is not happy the right brain causes it to sway left.
Besides communication, the tail also functions as a rudder when swimming and is important for balance, especially when running as it allows for fast turning without falling over.
When we understand the function of the tail and how important it is, it’s difficult to comprehend why many owners / breeders chose to dock a dog’s tail. Some observational studies have shown that there are a higher number of aggressive incidents involving dogs with docked tails. This is not surprising, as an important communication tool is missing. Thankfully this inhumane and cruel mutilation practice has been made illegal in many countries.
Have a look at what your dog’s tail is doing in different situations. It’s so interesting to watch (at least for me!) and can tell you so much about how your dog is feeling.
