Update on Pixie:

Pixie had her appointment with Dr. Drain at Grant Park Animal Hospital today. She was given a thorough exam and she is in good shape to go through her pregnancy.

While Pixie was being examined her orthopedic surgeon Dr. Hagen called with some information. He put a call into a friend of his who is a vet who specializes in dog pregnancy. He discussed Pixie's orthopedic issues and asked her opinion about a suitable pain control option. This gentleman went above and beyond to help us help Pixie by reaching out to a specialist on her behalf. Thank you so much sir , you are a gem!

Pixie will be receiving supplements, small doses of a pain medication , plenty of rest and will be staying at a special foster home while she awaits the arrival of her babies.

The last picture below shows the place where Pixie had been discarded like a piece of garbage.

The other photos are of how she should have been treated all along. She loves the blanket that was made for her by Sherry Wood. Thank you so much Sherry!

She adores both Ken and Lisa as long she gets her belly rubs. Lisa is a seasoned whelper who knows what to do if there are any issues . We also have another person on stand by who has a variety of useful skills and tools , should the need arise. We will be in constant contact with her vet to keep Pixie safe and healthy.

I have been told that " the right thing to do " would be to abort Pixie's pregnancy. I am not a vet ! I take these animals to a qualified vet and follow their lead because they know what needs to be done for Pixie, in her condition.

Aborting her pregnancy comes with pitfalls and issues just like allowing the pregnancy to go to full term. The least invasive plan is to allow Pixie to have her babies. I do not wish to debate this decision as arguing with me about following the directions of vets is a mute point, at best. Please send positive healthy vibes to Miss Pixie so she will do well going forward.

Pixie is safe, warm, loved and in the best hands with the village who have stepped up to help her through this part of her journey. Please thank these people for their part in saving her and helping her to find an amazing home.

Donations to help Pixie can be sent to [email protected] , Susan Minter Noga to help pay for Pixie's medical needs.

Thank you all for all the best wishes for this sweet pup.

In rescue we see more atrocities than the average person. We see the aftermath of people's indifference to other living creatures and we have been trying to tell the general public in word and pictures the lengths to which people abuse , torture and mistreat animals.

If you thought that Pixie's story was a hard one to hear about , there is a twist. SHE IS PREGNANT!!!!

Again let that sink in . A 10 pound dog who can't walk, is approximately 40 days pregnant ( gestation period is 63 to 67 days ) and is left in a snowbank to freeze to death..... this is an all time low life monster who did this to Pixie. There would have been 3 - 4 animals dead with this act of cowardice and depravity.

Pixie had her orthopedic surgeon appointment today and Dr. Hagen wants us to wait until Pixie has been I'm care for a month or so and do a recheck.

She had a pregnancy ultrasound today and we found out that she is pregnant with 2- 3 pups. Pixie will be seen by Dr Drain this Wednesday , to discuss Pixie's whelping needs.

Update # 1

We had a great time at the event. Lily and Pixie met quite a few people and did very well in the venue.

Thank you Sylvie and your family for a wonderful day at the The Rustic Wedding Barn near Steinbach. The vendors were amazing and the guests were so pleasant.

Congratulations to the winners of the baskets.

Initial post :

We are at the Rustic Wedding Barn Christmas Market today until 4pm located in La Broquerie. Come see us, Pixie and lily! We have lots of Christmas present ideas, gift basket raffle as well as tons of other vendors here, Santa visit , and sleigh rides. We hope to see you soon!

Update:

Pixie has an appointment with the Orthopedic surgeon on Monday at 915 am. This appointment will cost around 200.00 and we could use some help with this appointment. If you can help please let us know.

Initial post :

To start let me apologize in advance for the tone of this post . I am beyond angry at the cruel indifference that the individual showed this dog. And no she will NOT be posted to find the "owner " unless it is on a most wanted poster. I did look and she wasn't posted anywhere.

Meet Pixie a 9-12 year old dog who was found curled up on a snow bank, in a Farmer's field, yesterday, at -16 . She was DUMPED by a callous individual who expected for her to die. I know she was dumped because SHE COULDN'T WALK!

Let me say that again SHE COULDN'T WALK!

So she didn't run away from her home , she didn't chase a car and not know how to get home . She was placed on that snowbank by a person who needs to rot in hell. This morning it feels like -35, so had a kind human being not picked her up yesterday Pixie would have frozen to death . Let that sink in for a minute. Close your eyes and picture a 10 pound middle aged dog , who cannot walk ,out in - 35 temperatures overnight last night. If this is not the definition of torture and animal abuse then I don't know what it is.

I do know, after taking her to the vet at 4 pm yesterday, that she has Degenerative Joint Disease and she has had this issue for quite a while. I know that she is a sweet dog who deserved so much more care, love and affection. She has been placed on Gabepentin, her x-rays are being sent to an Orthopedic surgeon and we will take things one step at a time with Pixie. Dr.Danko, at Arrowwood Animal Hospital, says that she needs FHO surgery on both back legs . Research shows that this surgery can cost between $1200.00- 2500.00 per leg. We will keep you posted on what the Orthopedic surgeon has to say.

We also did bloodwork , she had a wellness exam and she seems to be a little overweight , probably because she can't walk to exercise . Her Potassium level was a little low but with proper nutrition that should get better.

Is this why this dog was placed on a snowbank? The individual couldn't afford her vetting ? Then humanely euthanize the dog, and don't be a son of a bitch and kill your dog by freezing it to death. Or pray that some stranger , like has happened , comes along and takes the poor creature in , Pixie was lucky.

Pixie will receive the love, kindness, vet care and whatever else she deserves as a sentient being to be very well cared for. She will be doted on and pampered.

If the owner does surface ,for some unknown reason, DO NOT contact the rescue or me personally . If I find out who you are I will register a complaint with the RCMP and put your ass in jail, if that is a possibility. DO NOT test my patience or my resolve to seek justice for Pixie, you will lose miserably !

I , of all people, understand the expense of vet care. Pixie will be our fourth medical case in the past 6 months. That may not seem like many cases but for a rescue as small as ours this is insane . HOW DO WE SAY NO? WE CAN'T!

There are alternatives to leaving your animal out in the cold to freeze to death. Talk to your vet and ask them what they suggest.

You have no idea how much I loath asking for donations. It is not in my nature to ask for help. I , with the help of my friends , have come to the realization that I am not asking for help for me, but to help the animals.

On an average night I sleep maybe 4 hours, but when we intake an animal like Pixie my sleep is nill , because i am wondering how many other Pixie's will be out freezing to death overnight. Like the white small dog I have been trying to find for four days now.

Donations can be sent to [email protected] or [email protected]. Susan Minter Noga has she paid for Pixie's initial vet visit at a cost of $525.00.

Without the help of The Doughnators, Susan Minter Noga, Kevin Noga , Maureen Minter, Russ Jackson, Lisa K Haney and holy host of other people , who have donated funds, we would not be able to save these dogs lives. Thank you

Rant over!

Again I apologize for the tone of this post but the truth has to be told.
Carmen

Just a short update on Mikey.

From a shutdown, starving , motionless pup to what you see in the video. He is doing very well and on the mend.

He is in quarantine until the bumps, Papilloma virus, is gone. It is a highly contagious virus which shows up when an immune system is compromised. He has been dewormed, given Brevecto and is on antibiotics.

His feet are not as swollen and red , his lesions are drying up , because he is on the antibiotics. We are planning to give him his first vaccinations before Christmas.

Thank you to all who donated to his care.

Update:

So Mikey has decided that he does not want to be lifted anymore, he wants to jump. When I tried to lift him into the tub he looked at me like," haven't you seen a pup jump before lady? " yep side eye and all . Little Mr. independent. His tail is wagging now and he wiggles his butt, a lot . He still has a ways to go but all these things that he is doing shows us that he is on the road to recovery.

Update 1 :

Mikey has been eating and drinking well. His first p**p has shown that he has been surviving on garbage. He is up walking around and will never have to worry about his meals again. His skin is less red which means that the medications are doing their job. He is standing up and walking around a bit . Thank you Patsy for the large red teddy bear, I'm sure it brings him comfort.

Initial post :

I apologize for the delay in doing this post but the last two days have been a blur.

Mikey was seen at the Arrowwood Animal Hospital, yesterday , by Dr. Patricia Danko DVM. She did skin scraping, blood work and a wellness exam . Her staff were so amazing with Mikey and even managed to trim his overgrown nails. Thank you Dr. Danko , for checking up on Mikey this morning.

The following is the list of medical conditions that this poor pup is dealing with:

Demodectic mange
Anemia
Papilloma virus
Emaciation
Skin lesions

Mikey is in quarantine until the virus subsides , is being fed 5 small meals a day for the emaciation and this morning he received his first round of medications. He actually stood up to eat, wagged his tail and stretched out for a bit. That doesnt seem like a big deal , but it is a very big deal for this pup. He still smells bad, but we will wait to give him a bath until his antibiotics kick in. We don't want to irritate the already raw skin on his body. He weighs 12.3 kgs (27.6 pounds) and should probably weigh around 45 pounds. His age is guessed at 7 months , and he has a long road to recovery. He has been named Mikey after the security guard who spent Friday morning helping us to find the pup.

Susan Minter Noga has offered to raise money to help pay for his vetting. Donations for his care can be sent to [email protected] and your name will be entered in a draw to win 5 dozen of the amazing Doughnators perogies.

One of our supporters shared Susan's post and a rescue named Southern Connection, in Ontario, sent a donation towards Mikey's care as well. Thank you so very much.

Tammy Nault was a stranger to me until she offered to help find Mikey . There were people who drove down from Russell and Birtle to find him as well.

When like-minded people join together lives are saved. When people put the life of Mikey as a priority they helped save his life and give him the chance to have a wonderful family. Rescues helping rescues, strangers helping strangers and supporters sending hugs and best wishes to this one pup makes this hardened rescuer teary eyed and hopeful or maybe it's the lack of sleep.

We will keep you posted on Mikey's progress as he heals .

Thank you all so very much for being the amazing humans that you are and for helping this very sick pup live!

These four pups have had a rough start in life. Their moms were strays who gave birth in a property owner's doghouse , in a northern community.

There were two litters , unknown how many in each litter but we were told at least 8 in one litter. Some of the pups were taken by people in the community , four perished in the cold and these four were brought in on Monday.

When they were picked up they were shivering so bad that they made the kennel door chatter. So the two smallest were put into my jacket and a soft fuzzy blanket placed on the bigger two in the kennel. The heated seat was activated and the vent was directed directly on their kennel to warm them up.

A call was placed to Diane Heron who promptly got warm formula, warm food and a warm place ready for their arrival. After they ate and drank, ravenously, they were taken directly to Grant Park Animal Hospital where Dr. Pop examined and treated them.

The two smallest were dehydrated so they received sub cue fluids . All four were fed some gastro food and dewormed . They were then taken to two separate foster homes, the smallest in one and the two bigger ones to a different one. They weighed from 2.4 pounds to 5.3 pounds , so they are small. They range in age from 6- 8 weeks and are emaciated.

The day after they arrived one of the fosters woke up to a pup with a swollen head . The pup was rushed to Grant Park Animal Hospital and was seen immediately by Dr. Drain. She was given medication and kept for the day under observation. It is suspected that she is fighting some sort of infection. She was sent home to the foster home. She is doing much better now, as the swelling is gone and she is back to normal.

Yesterday a second pup seemed to be off so we ended up giving her some energy paste, some sub cue fluids, some hamburg with pasta and she seemed to bounce back.

When pups come in compromised , like these ones, it is a roller coaster ride to get them on track. Sometimes it's a day by day thing and or even a minute by minute thing. They have all gained a couple of pounds since their arrival. They do have a long way to go!

It will be a couple of weeks before they can be given their initial vaccinations . We do need puppy food , formula and puppy toys. Please pm us to arrange for pick up or supplies can be dropped of at 920 Pritchard Ave in Winnipeg. If you would like us to shop for you please send your donations to [email protected].

If you would like to help with their vet bills please send a donation directly to the vet at [email protected]. please put Valley River litter in the comments line .

Thank you to Grant Park Animal Hospital for fitting in these pups at the end of a long day.

Thank you Kyla Boehm for taking me to the house to pick up these pups.

Thank you Morgan , Linda Coutu and Shauna for fostering these sweet pups. It takes a group of like-minded animal lovers who are focused on the animals to help in these types of situations.

Bless you all for stepping up!

On the way back from Cranbrook, we had heard about three pups near Dauphin that needed a lift to Winnipeg. The rescue, Ourearthangelstotherescue MB, was having trouble finding transport because of the snowstorms up that way over the previous days.

I had to stop in Dauphin to pick up our dog Sally so she could have her TPLO surgery yesterday . So I offered to pick them up. While en route to pick the three pups up, I spoke to Kyla in Valley River and found out that there were four pups , from a litter of 8 that still needed to come in. These four pups were on a different property than the three pups with Ourearthangelstotherescue.

I had been asked to take this litter over a month ago . I didn't have any room and had to say no. When I heard that four had succumbed to the cold, the choice was made to bring them in. These pups were so cold that they were moving the kennel when they shivered. I put two in my jacket and headed to Diane Heron's place . I called Diane, and by the time I got to her place, she had warmed up formula and warmed up wet food set up in a warm enclosure for the pups. After they ate, I continued down to Winnipeg and straight to the vets.

We have room now since the other 11 animals were transported to Cranbrook. I regret not taking the litter in a month ago, but we had no choice but to say no because we had no room at all for anything.

I left straw and comforters along with some wet and dry food for the other dogs on the property. I have made arrangements for more straw and two dog houses to be brought to the property. I have also asked Kyla to get a quote for spaying the two females on the property. The females were strays who came to the property to have their pups. The man of the property has some serious family things happening, so we're happy to help give him some stress relief by helping the dogs. The straw was donated to our rescue by an amazing couple who support us, Sherri and Brent Schaft.

These are the cases that keep up at night and give us nightmares . When we have to say no because we haven't got enough fosters or we don't have the funds to vet or we are having to buy food for the animals we already have in care, it drains us emotionally , financially and physically. It's hard not to blame ourselves in these situations because how can we say no to puppies freezing to death? There are so many animals suffering in the cold that we can not save them all, but we will save as many as we can.

The four smaller pups were brought to Grant Park Animal Hospital and seen by Dr. Pop. Two required sub cue fluids, all were dewormed and had a wellness exam . All four were emaciated, full of worms, and fought like crazy. They have had to become fighters to be able to survive. The pups range from 1.05 kg to 2.65 kg and are between 6- 8 weeks of age but not all from one litter.

Yesterday morning, I received a call from a foster saying that one of the pup's head was swollen and very painful. I was dropping Sally off at the vet for her surgery and was supposed to take Casey to her new foster home. Casey is the Dashund who came in compromised and had 7 pups two weeks ago. So Casey stayed in the clinic while I went out to grab the pup , in Ste Anne , and get it back to the clinic

Upon arrival, the pup was seen, within minutes of arriving, by Dr. Drain. The discussions were all over the place because there was no warning from the pup that there was an issue the evening before. The evening before her core temperature was low , when I got her back to the clinic, she was spiking a fever. So the decision was made to place her on a steroid to get the swelling down and antibiotics because she was obviously fighting an infection somewhere. She was sent back to the foster home for the evening with medications on board and for a few more days.

I am so happy to report that the swelling is almost gone and the pup is doing very well . The medications worked to alleviate the swelling and pain for this small pup.

The vetting for these four pups , the initial visit, was $412.00. I haven't received the invoice for the emergency visit yet. If you would like to help us cover their vetting, you can send a donation to Grant Park Animal Hospital at their etransfer email [email protected], and please put four pups in comment line . You can also make a donation to the rescue directly at [email protected].

28/11/2024

In my previous post ,I spoke about preparing to transport animals to Cranbrook , BC. As you can see in the picture below that the trip , with stops , normally takes around 24 hours. Due to intense storms the transport on the 23rd November took over 48 hours to complete. The transport was halted in Lethbridge , overnight on 24 th November, due to road conditions.

In Lethbridge we were housed and spoiled at my cousin Tina's place. Her son Jack and husband Brad were prepared for our arrival, with food, water , expens, and lots of snuggles . Gracie and the 10 pups were so happy to run around and have so many snuggles. The next morning Gracie, and the pups, were fed , walked and placed back into their kennels for the last leg of the trip.

I cannot express , in words, how much I appreciate Tina, Brad and Jack when I do these transports . This family has raised funds, supplies and awareness of Lexi's and is a great place to stop. Their house is an invaluable port in this long and sometimes insane trip to Cranbrook. Brad is amazing with all the dogs but has a special way with the shy dogs or shutdown dogs . So before I leave home I touch base with Tina and say, " I've got one that will need Brad.". Jack adores helping with the pups and does feed, water and pick up p**p for them, but loves to snuggle the dogs. Tina's knowledge, love for dogs and her amazing dog sense is an huge asset to have on these trips because she may pick up on something I haven't or will suggest some way of helping these animals.

In my absence , Linda Coutu , held down the fort ,at my place ,caring for the animals I am personally fostering. Linda is a foster if ours who has fostered the Coutu litter, four huge pups, helps with fundraisers, helps make items for fundraisers and soooo much more. Her dedication to the animals we bring is second to none . She also cares deeply about my well-being . She would be upset that I wasn't taking a nap , instead of making posts lol. Her husband Darrell has been very patient this week while I drove all over three provinces .

I arrived in Cranbrook around 430 pm and stayed there overnight. I left on 25 th and made my way back to Manitoba. On my way home I agreed to pick up 3 pups for another rescue .

So in review I drove 5400 kms, transported 11 animals to get o their new homes, drove through snowstorms, and picked up 7 pups on the way back, all in 5 days .

The next post will explain the return trip in detail.

In this crazy world of rescue, at times, it comes down to timing to get things done . What started out as a really bad time for my Nissan Rogue to start failing turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Vehicles used in rescuing animals always have high mileage. Between rescuing dogs in remote communities , to transporting animals to the vet, and picking up supplies , it is common for me to put on 7,000 to 10,000 kms in a month.

In August I had to make decision to either put some serious money into repairing the Rogue or look at a , new to me, vehicle. I reached out to Bev at Restart Financing , who got the ball rolling, and was amazing throughout the process. She put me in touch with a wonderful, dog loving person named Cheryl Appleyard at Gauthier's Waverley Chrysler.

I drove in to look at a vehicle that I thought would suit my needs, but very quickly changed my mind after being with Cheryl for about 10 minutes. I ended up purchasing a Dodge Grand Caravan , which was actually cheaper than the vehicle I was looking to buy, because it suited my needs . Thank you so much Cheryl.

While speaking to Cheryl, the owner Jayden Gauthier, came up and we spent a fair bit of time talking about rescue and as I was leaving he came back up to me and gave me a donation for the rescue. He also told me to let him know when I was coming in for service and he would see how else he could help .

In preparation for the transport on 23 November I went in to get an oil change and price out some winter tires . Like other customers I dropped off my van in the service bay and went into the waiting area. I had a small pup with me , who had just had a vet appointment, and brought her into the front office to meet Cheryl. She was smitten with the pup and snuggled her in tight. Jayden then came around the corner and said that he had spotted my van in the service department, the kennels in the back were a dead give away . He was handed the pup and the expression on his face was priceless so of course he needed a picture.

I am sure he had a million other things to do but he made time to spend snuggling a puppy and again help me to prepare my vehicle for a safe transport.

To say the least the people who work at Waverley Chrysler are HUGE animal lovers who showed this pup much love and affection. By the end of the visit I had a happy puppy , an oil change and a great price on winter tires. The tires were installed the next day so I would have a safe trip. Because of the great service 10 puppies and a mom dog were safely transported to Cranbrook , BC, and onto their new lives.

Thank you so much Jayden, Cheryl, Bev, Daniel and the staff at Waverley Chrysler for helping us save the loves of so many more . If anyone is looking for a vehicle please check this place out as it is a great place to do business.

25/11/2024

Another transport done , animals in their foster homes . Thank you Leslie Long Rescue for taking in these sweethearts .

Now for the white knuckle ride back to Manitoba.
