Did you know the name “ferret” is derived from the Latin word furittus, meaning little thief? 🥷

Desexing ferrets is a routine procedure performed under general anaesthesia. As well as reducing their unique musky odour and some undesired behaviours, this is also a life-saving procedure for pet females.

Up to 50% of female ferrets are unable to come out of the oestrus phase of their cycle without mating, resulting in very high levels of the hormone oestrogen, placing them at risk of developing fatal anemia (low red blood cells). 🩸

Lucky for her, the purebred costume doubled as an effective e-collar!

We commonly recommend e-collars to prevent pets from licking, chewing and scratching wounds and surgical sites. Keep your pet entertained during these periods with puzzle toys, lick mats and treat dispensers while they heal! 🩺 🐾

🦜 Constricted Toe Syndrome 🩺

We saw Bee 🐝 the Blue and Gold Macaw last week to remove her stitches after a toe amputation.

As young birds grow, if the temperature and humidity isn’t quite right, they are prone to developing fibrous bands of tissue around the digits. These cause constriction as the bird grows, restricting and eventually preventing blood supply to the toe.

Bee 🐝 required a toe amputation. She underwent a general anesthetic under the watchful eye of her new Mum Lesley, one of our passionate nurses👩🏻‍⚕️.

Bee 🐝 has been an excellent patient and recovered well, she is now focusing on enjoying her adolescence with her new family! 🦜❤️

☀️🥵 Hot Weather Warning 🥵☀️

With temperatures expected to soar over the coming days, simple measures can save your pet's life! It only takes six minutes for your pet to die from heatstroke.

🐾 Ensure all animals have access to shade with good ventilation
🐾 Provide access to at least two sources of clean, cool water at all times
🐾 Do not leave dogs tethered
🐾 Do not exercise your dog in the heat of the day or walk them on hot surfaces (test surface temperature with the back of your hand)
🐾 Do not leave pets unattended in cars
🐾 Do not transport pets on the back of utes
🐾 Keep your pets inside in the air conditioning; if you're cool, they will be too!

🐾 🦷 Dental Health Month 🦷 🐾

Recent studies have shown, by only two years of age 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of dental disease. Your pet may show no indication of dental pain while harboring a significant level of inflammation from invading plaque bacteria. Left untreated this oral inflammation has been linked to the development of other diseases affecting the heart, liver and kidneys. 🤕

Due to the seasonal spike in tick populations, Australia is currently experiencing a shortage in the life-saving tick paralysis antiserum.

It is vital, now more than ever, to be proactive in the application of preventative tick treatments. We are within a high paralysis tick population zone and experience high numbers of cases each year.

🍀Every one meet this beautiful boy Zeus 🍀

Zeus came into an encounter whilst on a walk with his owner with a deadly Eastern Brown Snake.

Luckily enough Zeus survived as he was rushed down to our clinic were we gave the antivenom.

Symptoms to watch for if you think your pet has been bitten by a Brown or Red Belly snake:

- Sudden collapse
- Vomiting
- Foaming at the mouth
- Muscle Tremors
- Weakness or Paralysis

Please take them to the closest vet clinic ASAP if you feel your beloved animal might have been bitten. 🐍

Everyone keep an eye out for snakes on your walks in this lovely warm weather 🌞

Hi Everyone ! 🐾

Due to the recent lockdown and lock down notices in our area, we are once again asking clients to remain outside and to call the clinic when you have arrived. We will then take your pets inside the clinic for their consultation with just staff members only.

A vet will then come and chat to you outside whilst social distancing. We ask that even though it is outside that you still wear a mask. 😷

For people needing medications/ food or special orders please phone the clinic and give us notice to do so.
