When a dog injures its cruciate ligament or undergoes surgery, multiple tissues can be affected, including the ligament, cartilage, muscle, skin, and bone. While the body has the ability to heal itself, it often forms scar tissue, which differs from regular tissue in terms of strength, elasticity, and functionality. Muscles may not return to normal on their own with just rest and leash walking. The mechanics of the entire limb will be altered, leading to a different gait and redistribution of forces to other parts of the body.
While your vet may prescribe some range of motion exercises and a walking program, these alone are not always enough to rebuild muscle effectively. This is where additional rehabilitation options, such as canine massage therapy, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, laser therapy, or acupuncture, become essential. Nutrition is also incredibly important for your Dog to be able to heal properly. At Petholistics, we specialise in canine massage therapy to help your dog recover more fully and regain muscle strength by increasing blood flow and mobility, reducing compensatory tension, breaking up scar tissue and supporting you with the passive range of movement and strengthening exercises. Other great local services that I have personally used myself are bounce back (Hydro) and Holistic Dog (laser and nutrition). Follow your vets instructions and where possible consider a rehab or combination of rehab options to aid recovery and strength building and to prevent further injury.

A little bit of history: In 2010, PETholistics founder discovered the perfect course at the Natural College of Traditional Medicine (now ANME - Animal Naturopathic Medicine Ēducātum). After completing the canine myofunctional therapy program, PETholistics was born, bringing top-notch in-home canine massage services and member of small animal and equine and naturopathic association (SAENA)

Our expertise includes helping arthritic dogs, racing dogs, and post-op dogs recovering from cruciate ligament and patella luxation surgeries. To further refine our skills, we've recently enrolled in a canine cruciate recovery accelerator course.

We can also offer essential oil incorporation during massage sessions, consulting with a qualified aromatherapist to ensure the best care for your furry friend.

Calling all Dog Lovers!

Are you passionate about helping dogs find their forever homes? Scruffer Lovers is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as the Dog Intake Coordinator.
As Dog Intake Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in managing the smooth transition of dogs into Scruffer Lovers by finding and selecting suitable foster carers for dogs coming into care. You will also be responsible for implementing and maintaining a system to effectively keep track of foster carers, their availability and their preferences.
This is a volunteer role (Scruffers is 100% volunteer run) and while it may not come with a pay check, the rewards are immeasurable. The joy of seeing a dog find their forever home and knowing that you played a part in their journey is truly priceless (trust us – we know!).
The work requirement will vary widely according to the number of dogs coming in. It is anticipated that, on average, the minimum requirement will be 10-15 hours per week.
We are looking for someone with excellent organisational and management skills, excellent interpersonal skills and proficiency in relevant computer and record keeping systems. Experience in animal care, rescue or a related field is preferred.
