You can change your life to suit your dog or you and your dog can live a joyful and rewarding life together. My name is Eva Drage and I am the Head Trainer at Paws at Play Dog Training. Every four-legged friend I have owned has taught me and reinforced the importance of training and understanding dog behaviour to live a happy and well-balanced life with our canine companions. Having previously vol

unteered as an instructor at my local obedience club and competing successfully in dog sports, including high level obedience for over seven years, what once seemed pass and parcel in responsible dog ownership, quickly became my purpose! However, it was my Finnish Lapphund, Koda, who motivated me to delve deeper into the world of canine behaviour as I emBARKed on the journey to understand his reactivity, improve his wellbeing and strengthen our bond by helping him work through his triggers and anxieties. My experiences with owning a reactive dog, along with my journey into dog sports and helping others on a casual basis with their own difficulties led me to enrol in a Certificate III in Dog Behaviour & Training through the National Dog Trainers Federation (NDTF), to expand my knowledge and skill base and enable me to help others live happy and harmonious lives with their four-legged companions. Offering a variety of services, including behavioural training, pre and post-puppy consultations and one-on-one obedience, life skills and manners training, Paws at Play is here to help you work better with your dog. At Paws at Play, we believe in the power of food and play rewards and use modern LIMA (least invasive, minimally aversive) training methods that focus predominantly on a positive experience for dog and human alike to help your dog learn to make good choices. Whatever your training goal, we understand that every dog learns differently and therefore, adapt the training style to whatever your dog responds to best. At Paws at Play we promote...
Happy, well-balanced dogs you can be proud of. Fulfilling dog-human relationships built on patience, teamwork and adaptability. Canine companions that change your life. To start this journey together, get in touch today on 0499 229 788, via Facebook or email [email protected]

Shoutout to Wildhunde for their awesome range of dog tugs and training gear! Absolutely love their 5m biothane long lines, perfect for puppy training sessions - lightweight enough to drop and allow puppy to drag while working on obedience, recalls and engaged in tug but with enough length to act as security of having something to grab or step on when puppy starts drifting out of engagement/drive mode.

They are also the perfect length and weight to allow puppies to explore “freely” after training sessions to burn off some extra steam while still being on lead - remember, off leash is a privilege that is earned, it is NOT a given! 😉

Being genuine biothane, the leads are easy clean, another big tick especially in wet winter conditions.

The Wildhunde range of tugs and biothane long lines come highly recommended by all three of my dogs. 🙂

Building a puppies confidence in our manmade environment is another important part of raising a puppy. There are hundreds, if not thousands of different surfaces, noises, textures, sights, the list goes on that your puppy will have to interact with during its lifetime, teaching your pup to be neutral or better yet, to interact with these novel environments helps build confident adult dogs who are comfortable living in our manmade environment.

Surfaces should be a major focus point, and heights too (think for grooming, Vet visits, car ramps, etc) so that our dogs feel safe and confident to tackle any flooring we may need to ask them to tackle.

Building positive associations with our novel human environment can help prevent many behaviour issues from ever popping up, things like surface phobias can be a common problem but building confidence to interact with different surfaces from an early age can help negate this ever even becoming an issue.

Baby Phoenix is almost 16 weeks old and already learning the value of engagement and the human - good things come from HER human. 😉

We are already building a loose leash walk, currently reinforcement is frequent with short duration between each reinforcer but as she gets better at this skill and practices it more, reinforcement will become less frequent and the duration between reinforcement will increase.

Teaching young puppies how to walk politely on a leash is such a valuable skill, setting the pup up for a lifetime of polite loose leash walking. ⭐️

Teaching puppies to share and not sn**ch…

Puppies are born not knowing how to share resources like toys, chews, etc which is why you will often see them trying to sn**ch items they want away from other puppies, dogs and humans.

In our human world pups don’t need to sn**ch resources we have plenty to go around for everyone. Teaching a puppy not to sn**ch resources away from other dogs and humans is a critical life skill.

Who has seen the unruly puppy who jumps up to steal food straight from toddlers, kids, even adults hands? As a rule of thumb puppies DO NOT outgrow these behaviours, especially the highly reinforcing behaviours that get them what they want, they grow INTO these behaviours.

Like everything in a puppies world, it’s up to us to teach them about our world and our human expectations.

In the video you can see my older girl and the puppy chewing on a goat horn. Phoenix being only 12.5 weeks old is naturally very curious and doesn’t understand that she cannot have Inka’s resource in that moment.

From day one I have been teaching Phoenix spatial pressure and yielding to it (will try to make a video on that, it’s such an effective form of communication between human and dog but something else we need to teach many dogs) as well as installing positive reinforcement markers “Yes” + reinforcement, but also negative markers of “Ah ah” and “No” + consequence, so she knows with a verbal marker that behaviour is not desired.

You can hear me start with the verbal negative marker, when puppy continues to nudge towards Inka, tempting herself into trying to steal Inka’s resource, all I had to do was get up and move towards pup and that was enough spatial pressure to interrupt her forward movement towards Inka, then I redirect Phoenix back onto her resource and praise so she knows that is the desired behaviour. Then she gets up because you know, puppy, busy puppy at that so we’ve got to stay on the move! 🤣

When you welcome a new puppy into your house, training should always start on day one. 🥇

Baby Phoenix had her last vaccination at the Vet today and she handled everything like a star! ⭐️

Puppies are awesome little things in that they are open slates learning about the world which gives us the opportunity to guide them through their critical periods and set them up to grow into well adjusted, balanced adult dogs.

Puppies generally have short attention spans and are easily distracted so starting consistent training at home is key if you want to set your pup up for success in the big wide world.

As an example, a critical life skill that all puppies should be introduced to is being comfortable with being touched, and I am not just talking about being petted. From day one start touching your pups feet, legs, tail, ears, introduce checking teeth and progress to opening their mouth, reinforcing all calmness and compliance to help the pup understand being touched and examined are good things. Start at home and progress touching and examining your pup to the outside world and importantly to the Vet and groomer (if you use one), always reinforcing calmness and compliance.

By getting our pups comfortable with being touched and examined, not only does it make our Vets and groomers jobs easier, more importantly it makes visits to these essential services far less stressful on our pups and dogs as they know that being touched and examined isn’t a scary thing, it’s actually a very good thing as good stuff comes from being touched by these strange human beings!

We have a baby puppy in the house after we had to say goodbye to our old fella which left a gaping big hole in our hearts, the timing of this litter and the quality of it (niece to my Inka and cousin to my Rocky, ethical ANKC breeder) just felt like the stars were aligning, the universe sending us a message.

Baby Phoenix (new life, rising from ashes, significant meaning after losing our old boy) has been with us for only one week and she is a little pocket rocket and wickedly smart!

Today she was introduced to a flat collar and leash, while we wait for the final vaccination, we are doing work in our front yard to get accustomed to walking on lead, and she is already learning what a wonderful thing it is to yield to leash pressure and comply with the human. I had run out of poached chicken which she LOVES so you will see I make a huge fuss over her for yielding, but ideally I would have liked to have backed the reinforcement up with a big piece of chicken so she really knew she was the bestest girl in the world for yielding and complying. 🌟

Remember puppies require a world of work, guidance and direction, but having a picture in your mind of what you want the end result to look like helps to set training and behaviour expectation goals. 🥇

Also, don’t forget the patience, patience, and even more patience as puppies have SO MUCH to learn about the world, and our job is to teach them about it. 🙂

This is what my clients hear me preaching all the time “YOU need to make yourself the most valuable thing in your dogs world.” It takes time, effort and commitment to do that but the relationship and bond you build with your dog is 1000% worth it!

Let me help you! ..

Most dogs don’t just willingly deliver things to your hand that they would rather eat or otherwise consider worth keeping.

Getting them to bring and give you ‘high value’ things (in this instance raw steak) is not a trick!

Nor is it a demand, where the dog is doing it because he or she is worried about not doing it.

It is a state of mind - a trust - that is built into the dog since puppyhood.
The puppy is never challenged over ‘high value’ things, but instead the access is controlled and interaction is encouraged - not discouraged!

People have difficulty understanding that, because the human default is to instantly punish what we see as being ‘the wrong thing’. Let me tell you from direct experience that that is a sh*tty and unenjoyable way to raise a puppy, and it will bite you in the backside as the growing puppy learns that distance from you is his friend.

My Penrith Puppy Development Program shows you EXACTLY how I get from a puppy that knows nothing about what you want, to a dog that lives to do what you want!!

If you have a puppy, or you are thinking of getting a puppy, you would do FAR worse than to follow my approach in how to raise and train a pup to become an adult dog you can be proud of!

Or don’t! But don’t say you weren’t given the option of preventing the problems you need help with when the pup grows up!

This is by FAR one piece of advice that can help everything. Especially if you have a reactive dog 💥
It can take a while to get into the habit of actually doing this though.

There is one thing that ALL good trainers have in common.
We are TOTALLY aware of EVERYTHING around us.

We may be helping the dog in front of us but we are totally aware of what is behind us, around us, the sounds, the movement....the possible and probable.
The environment and what is around can both positively or negatively affect your dog....immensely.

Windy day ?
Your dog was aware of the 20 dogs on your street...now it is aware of 100 in the area and cannot pin point their distance as well as before. This can make some dogs on edge. The information is distracting.
Most trainers dislike wind.

Car parked ?
There could be a cat under it, a dog about to be let out of the back seat or boot area. Is there a driver in the front about to drive off....is it likely to be a very noisy car ?

Children in a front yard playing ?
Are they about to run out the gate ? Does one have a scooter about to leave ? Are they quiet or are they excited ?

Dog behind a gate ?
Is it older ? Is it there to alert its humans ? Is the gate secure or is there a section of the fence it could easily jump?

Dog on lead being walked ?
Is the walker aware of their own dogs behaviour ? Is the dog straining on the lead (this can lead to a reaction for some dogs). Is this dog giving yours a heavy stare or just a glance ?

At a local field....
Is there another dog or more than one ? Is someone throwing a ball nearby and oblivious to how close it can get to your dog. Is a dog off lead running and in a hyper excited state ?
Is one dog barking incessantly ?

So....how on earth can this help your dog ?

Awareness, awareness of environment, possible issues and most importantly how your dog reacts.
Many times I am told behaviour has come "out of the blue".
In the vast majority of cases it hasn't come out of the blue......all signs were already there.
Just not picked up on.

If you can tune into the environment and watch your dog you WILL learn valuable information.

Is the wind too much ? Does it negatively impact your walk every time it is windy ?
That is information you can use. Walk when it is calmer.

Is your dog ball obsessed ? The dogs at the field have a ball 30 metres away from you.....is that why your dog has changed their behaviour ?

Does your dog suddenly dislike large white dogs ? Are you aware that the dog that barks the most on your walk is the large white dog on the corner by your house....the same corner where loud cars speed past ?

This takes a while to perfect but you can absolutely start to tune in more by stopping a few times on your walk and listening to the environment around you.
That is a great start.
Can you hear that loud motorcycle down the block heading your way?.....you can now prepare your dog that doesn't like motorbikes (with focus on you, encouraging sniffing to relax or pull out a treat/toy to focus on or sniff out).

Did a mower just start a few doors in front of you ? Cross the road and encourage calmness and reward looking at the mower from a distance instead of forcing your dog to walk right past the object it dislikes.

All of this helps you make better decisions, but much more than that you will begin to see and hear things that affect your dog that you would have never noticed before.
You will KNOW that your dogs tail is bristling because you are coming up a parked car that a cat has just ran under, you can cross the road to avoid an issue......or get focus on you as you pass.
You will KNOW that the hesitancy in walking past a certain house is because there is a dog on their path that stares heavily at yours...again you can help your dog through that now you are aware.......BEFORE an issues occurs.

So give it a go.
Start to listen.
Start to look for possible issues rather than be forced to be reactive.

I promise you it will change everything.

We have a heatwave forecast in Adelaide over the next few days, don’t forget to keep your pets cool - access to cool, fresh water at all times; access to shade if outside or a cool area of the house; keep windows and curtains closed to minimise the heat getting in; if you can, leave the air conditioner on or even a fan; walks only early in the day or late in the evening and keep those coated/double coated dogs brushed thoroughly to remove excess dead undercoat that can contribute to overheating. 💧 🧊 🪮 🪭 🐾

Look at these little superstars! Only third session in, first time working on boundary thresholds when in free mode and free together, and both girls smashed it!

Ginja and Chilli are such fun little dogs, we have a number of things we are working on, not rushing doors, gates etc being just one of them, and the girls have come such a long way in a very short space of time thanks to the amazing dedication from their human, putting in the hard work and doing all her homework. 📚

The girls are complete opposites - Ginja is confident, outgoing, in your face; Chilli is a bit nervous around strange people but only third time seeing me today and not only did she quickly settle when I arrived but she was coming up to investigate me knowing I would respect her boundaries.

Absolutely loving watching Chilli come out of her shell around me, and seeing the huge progress this team have already made, very excited about what the future has install for them. 🌟

Shout out to Gumhaven K9 Aquaplay in Kersbrook, we went for the first time today and it’s a great space that is also perfect for reactive, nervous or shy dogs, or for humans who just like to have a peaceful outing with their dogs without the risk of random dogs rushing them. 🙃

If you think your dog might enjoy a private swim in the pool, reach out to Tony via his page Gumhaven K9 Aquaplay . We travelled an hour each way from Flagstaff Hill, and it was well worth it. 😁

I met these two gorgeous little girls this week, Ginja the Tenterfield Terrier and Chilli the Jack Russell Terrier.

Both girls are massively food driven which has led to some resource guarding and fighting between the girls, both girls love nothing more than to bark endlessly when visitors are over, and Chilli is a bit on the nervous side leading to both girls becoming reactive on leash making walks unpleasant for everyone. Both girls are absolute sweethearts though and very eager to learn!

Over the coming weeks Chilli and her person will focus on building Chilli’s confidence by learning to read body language signs, advocating for Chilli, lots and lots of positive reinforcement to show Chilli good things happen when she pushes herself out of her comfort zone but always at her pace. Ginja will be focusing on her manners especially when food is around, and both girls will be working on their manners around door and gate thresholds as well as when guests are over (different plans with Chilli being nervous and Ginja being the polar opposite, she is a complete social butterfly), and working back towards their person being able to take the girls on walks together again. ❤️

I can’t wait to see how this team progress, these two are awesome little dogs and their person is committed to getting everybody back on track to living harmoniously again. 😇

Nice way to start the week meeting this sweet little cutie. 😍

Charlee has a habit of door dashing the gate to the property when it’s left open, made worse by a lack of recall and has also gotten into the habit of barking to be let out at nighttime just so she can get a treat for coming back in, a smart little cookie.

This little girl has fabulous food drive that we can take advantage of to make her busy humans life easier when it comes to training, especially with two young human children running around too. Charlee was a star during our first session and with her persons dedication to training, it won’t be long before there is no more door dashing, blowing off recalls or demand barking at night. 🌟

20/12/2023

We are now in the full swing of the festive season and amongst the festivities, our family pets can become lost from split second decisions by friends and family members who may not know to close and lock gates and doors, etc as well as being spooked by fireworks during New Years. If you find a lost dog, please follow the suggestions in the post below, taking particular note of NOT feeding other peoples lost dogs due to possible allergies or food sensitivities, and NOT allowing the lost dog to interact with your dog/s and kids due to unknown behavioural issues and histories - remember, a wagging tail does not always mean friendly! ✌🏻

😳 𝗢𝗛 𝗦𝗛*𝗧… 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗴!

👉🏽 Over the past couple of months we have had 3 separate incidents where one of our dogs has gone walk abouts. Aside from being extremely grateful that our dogs were quickly returned to us, there were a few things that we took away from each circumstance that I think are worth sharing.

𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗗𝗢𝗚

✅ Immediately check their identification and contact the owner.

✅ Check for visible injuries and if so, immediately take to the vet.

✅ Post on community Facebook groups, including information such as breed, gender, desexed, collars, location found, state of dog (are they stressed/ happy etc.)

👉🏽 If you do not get a response within 30-60 minutes, contact the local vet and take them there to be chip scanned and contained.

❌ Do not feed the dog.

🙄 I can’t tell you how infuriating it was to hear that on every occasion where my dogs were gone for a whole of 60 minutes that they were fed random food. I know that it’s a sign of caring however, it is not your job to make the assumption that the dog is starving. This is up to a vet to decide. You also may not be aware of allergies, intolerances and specific diets.

❌ Do not mix this dog with your other animals or children.

😬 This is a dog you know absolutely nothing about. It should not be mixed with children or other animals even if it looks ‘friendly’.

❌ Do not give excessive attention to the dog.

☝🏽Secure the dog safely and wait for the owner to collect. Making the little adventure a huge reinforcement event is not helpful. Whilst it’s important for the dog to feel safe in your care, it’s not necessary to dote over the dog.

😑 An example - Binti my Sheltie got out just last week, the gate wasn’t latched which was definitely my fault. Gone for no longer than 15 minutes, she made her way to a house across the street, was fed roast lamb, was allowed in their house on their furniture, did some trick training and was all over their children. I’m sure she had the best time.

☝🏽 Whilst I am SO grateful she landed in caring hands, how fantastic was her adventure? How much more likely is she to see an open gate and go looking for those opportunities again? I don’t know.

𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔 𝗗𝗢𝗚

✅ Make sure they have correct identification and their microchipping is up to-date.

🏷️ On the occasion that Lucy escaped after a tradie didn’t close the gate, she had a collar on but no identification. The person that found her thought it was ‘sign’ that a Staffy wondered into her house after she recently lost her Staffy. Lucy was gone for hours chilling on her couch, eating her food and getting snuggles. All whilst we had a search party walking the streets. After a Facebook post that we created, we were contacted. The lady admitted that if no one claimed her she would have kept her. UMM WHAT?!

❗️Having identification makes for an easy phone call and you’ll likely get your dog back quicker. Updating your microchipping information is equally as important for a quick return.

✅ Check your yard, fences and work on your boundaries.

👉🏽 On each occasion where our dogs have gotten out it has been due to human error, which tells me two things; I am being too complacent with gates and may need a back up and that our dogs need some work on their boundary training to ensure they don’t cross gate thresholds.

☝🏽 If your dog is a serial escape artist, you need to make positive steps in the right direction to ensure your yard is secure and your dog won’t escape. It is simply not good enough to have your dog roaming the streets constantly.

❌ No parties on the return.

👉🏽 This might be controversial, however I’m a firm believer of not over compensating when your dog returns. There are exceptions here where I’m sure emotion takes over. However, where possible I try to remain neutral and get on with life like it’s a non event.

🤔 It’s impossible to know if the dog perceives a return as a huge reinforcer if we have a party or if they perceive the whole event as a reinforcer, I’m not entirely sure, so for me, it’s safer to just get on with life.

👉🏽 Ultimately the end goal is that if you lose a dog or you find a dog that the correct owner is identified, the dog is returned and steps are put in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

🐕 Have you ever found a dog? Do you have any tips? Or have you lost your dog and wish the people that found him/ her did something differently.

Weekends are the perfect time to create “pretty bowls” for the dogs which while they may not fully appreciate it 😂 the humans at least get a great deal of enjoyment out of creating pretty meals. 😍

While I am a big advocate for fresh food feeding, adding even some fresh food to your dogs kibble can have so many benefits including nutritional, flavour and texture enrichment, as well as helping create a healthy and flourishing gut microbiome. The gut is described as “the second brain” so it makes sense to look after our dogs gut health as best we can (and our own too!).

What did your pooches have for breakfast today? 😋

(Before anyone freaks out 😆 avocado is safe for dogs, the amount of persin a dog would need to consume to cause toxicity is insane, they would be sick from the richness well before consuming enough persin to cause toxicity. Fun fact, persin is actually toxic to humans too. Don’t always believe Google. 😉)

Bit late posting but well that’s what I do, I am terrible at keeping my business page up to date. 🫣

The Collies and I made a huge trip over to the other side of Melbourne a couple of weeks ago to compete in the Dogs VIC State Scent Work trial.

Rocky walked away with a pass in Scent Work Advanced; my girl Inka cleaned up earning 3/3 passes, giving her the Scent Work Novice title, and as the cherry on top, earned the HIGHEST ACHIEVING COLLIE IN TRIAL rosette kindly sponsored by the Collie Club of Victoria! 🥳

Super proud of my little team, fabulous weekend away with friends, spent time catching up with both my dogs breeder and the owner of my superstar boys sire, lots of laughs, lots of fun, lots and lots and lots of driving (almost 1,900km over 4 days) and I can’t wait to do it all over again. Dogs really are fabulous at bringing people together. 😊

Super proud of this girl last night earning her 5th of the required 6 passes towards her Scent Work Novice title at the Gundog Club of SA single element trial. 🎉

I am thrilled to bits with the progress my crazy blue Collie has made this year, not just in dog sports but with life in general. But the best part has been the stronger bond and tighter relationship we have built over the course of this year, I am so lucky to have such an amazing companion to travel this journey with. ❤️

This!! 🙌🏻 Just because a dog doesn’t like being patted on the head does not mean it has been abused 🙄 it’s scary having strange humans reach over your head, and can be uncomfortable even with people you might know. And please let’s stop attaching stories to dogs with unknown histories, instead let’s focus on the dog in front of us to help them be the best they can to live the best life they can. 💪🏻

𝗕𝗬 𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘, 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗗

One of the most common myths is that rescue/rehome dogs for example have been hit if they shy away from head pats.

Nope, dogs by large don't actually like being touched on the head by strangers and sometimes even by their humans.

Most dogs who accept head patting simply have learned to tolerate our weird ways. Of course, there are outliers, the more social individuals who love any kind of pat.

If you have a rescue/rehome, they don't need stories of why they do and don't do things, they need, training, leadership (rules & boundaries), consistency & clarity...maybe more so than dogs who grew up in the one home especially at the start of your relationship.

Yes, some dogs have had abusive backgrounds but unless you know what happened, the story doesn’t benefit your dog.

This week it was my girls turn to go Scent Work trialing and my little blue whirlwind did not disappoint, achieving two out of two passes - Novice Containers on Tuesday night, followed up by Novice Exterior on Wednesday night. ⭐️

Super proud of this girl, it took her awhile to get the hang of the odour game, she is a brilliant tracking dog (following human scent) but finding odour (essential oils - birch, anise, clove or cypress) took a bit of adjusting for her brain and for her human to work out what suits her training wise with the odour game.

Dog training is rarely black and white - what suits one dog may not suit the next. Always be flexible when it comes to training and remember that every dog teaches us something new if our minds are open to it. 😉
