At Stephen Terrace Veterinary Clinic in Adelaide, we realise that continuity of care, excellence in service and good communication are the basic and reasonable expectations of our clients. The initial concept was to provide excellent medical and surgical services. This has not changed since the inception of the practice. In an ever changing world we have come to realise that continuity of care, ex

cellence in service and good communication are the basic and reasonable expectations of our clients. This philosophy governs Stephen Terrace and is paramount when we select and employ all our team members. The expansion of knowledge in the Veterinary field over the past decade has been phenomenal. With the advent of specialists and superspecialists, it is no longer advisable for one person to wear all hats as in the past. At Stephen Terrace we know what we do well. In addition to the services we provide, we have also developed a broad network of professional contacts both locally, interstate and internationally. This enables us to obtain the best advice for your pet, and in some instances outsource the treatment to a separate specialist or centre of excellence.

Have you ever wondered why we recommend at least yearly health checks for your pet? ✅ It’s for several reasons – firstly, pets age much more rapidly than humans, meaning health conditions progress quickly if left unchecked. Secondly, it’s because most health conditions are much easier (and cheaper) to treat if caught early, meaning a longer, happier, healthier life for your pet. If your pet hasn’t seen the vet in the last year, we recommend making an appointment today. 🏥💚

☀️🍖 With summer in full swing and Australia Day just around the corner, it’s genuinely BBQ season. However, with BBQ season comes several potential dangers, such as meat skewers.

Every year around Australia, veterinary clinics see patients who have ingested meat skewers discarded at BBQs.🚨 These skewers become dangerous foreign bodies in the digestive tract and require surgery to be removed. Play it safe this summer and keep meat skewers (and their rubbish) well away from pets. 🐾🚫

Our vets will always physically check your pet over and ask you questions about their health before vaccination, as we want to ensure they are fit and healthy beforehand. We do this because vaccination is generally delayed if pets are unwell. 🤒🐈
Vaccination works by stimulating the immune system to generate a specific response – if the immune system is already busy fighting an infection or other illness, it won’t cause the desired response to the vaccine.

When you visit the vet, they ask several questions to obtain a history. This information is vital to ensure an accurate diagnosis. One of the most common questions is around the EDDU status of your pet – that is, the eating, drinking, defecating and urinating habits of your pet. Knowing consumption and toileting behaviours is essential to determine if something is wrong. So, owners need to pay attention to these crucial details. 🕵️‍♂️

No one likes handling dog p**p; however, sometimes, grabbing a sample of your pet's number 2’s can help your veterinarian diagnose their condition. 🐩
Dogs experiencing diarrhoea, blood in the stool or other unusual symptoms should have a poo sample examined by the veterinarian. 🧤🔬 If you need to collect a sample, use gloves and store it in an airtight container. Drop the sample into the clinic as soon as possible, or keep it refrigerated if there will be a delay of more than an hour.

💡Tip: Keeping a sample in your fridge? Clearly label the container to prevent midnight snackers from opening up what would be a very unappetising (and unhygienic) surprise!

🐶🌀Is your bum-scootin' furbaby driving you crazy? Don't delay getting your dog's a**l glands unblocked.

While unpleasant for all involved, sometimes the glands below a dog's tail (called a**l glands) have to be expressed. This is because in some dogs, they become blocked, and if the blockage isn't cleared, a**l glands can become infected and rupture. Scooting their rear end along the ground or excessive licking under their tail are symptoms of blocked a**l glands. Our nurses and vets can unblock these glands and advise on management options to prevent further blockages. 🔍🐕

Whether it's a big emergency or a little accident, our team will triage your pet to ensure they get the appropriate level of care! 🚑🐾

When you call or visit the clinic, you might not be aware that the first person you encounter - usually one of our friendly nurses or receptionists - is incredibly skilled in triage. Triage is the initial assessment of a patient to determine the urgency of their condition, and it's how we ensure pets with life-threatening illnesses or injuries get the care they need when they need it. This is just another thing the fantastic front desk staff can do! 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

We are seeing a lot of Beestings 🐝 lately with two patients today presenting with sudden onset of nausea/vomiting and generally seeming not themselves. Poor sweet Goldie here had a sting removed from her foot and before that Maggie the schnauzer had a sting removed from her tongue! Other symptoms of a bee sting include sudden pain/lameness, swelling, hives/welts and in severe cases difficulty breathing and collapsing. Goldie and Maggie’s owners didn’t even see the bees but knew things were not right and brought their beloved pet to us straight away where we were able to assess and treat them accordingly. Just like humans, all dogs and cats will have differing reactions 😺🐕

Reminder to keep your fur babies safe & secure during the New Year period 🎆

There are lots of ways to celebrate the new year, and although fireworks are a favourite among humans, they can be pretty terrifying for our furry and feathered friends.

Here are a few things you can do to make sure your best friends are kept safe on NYE ✨👉 https://animalsaus.co/3TCNLfd

Whilst gnawing on bones can provide great entertainment for dogs, it is also associated with a few potential hazards. 🦴😯

If dogs chew up and eat large quantities of bone, the indigestible pieces can bank up in their large intestine and become stuck.

This can lead to constipation symptoms such as straining, lethargy, tummy pain, a reduced appetite, and sometimes vomiting, and may necessitate treatment with a general anaesthetic and e***a procedure.

To avoid bone-related back-ups, we advise offering your pet lower-risk chewing alternatives, such as dental chews or stuffed Kong toys. Consult our team regarding the safest options! 👩🏼‍⚕️💙🐶

Whilst most dogs are savvy enough not to drink salt water, the occasional oddball dog doesn’t understand or care that it’s a bad idea! 👅💧🧂

In most cases, dogs who drink a few mouthfuls of salt water will develop diarrhoea (due to the high salt concentration drawing water into the dog’s intestines). However, if dogs consume larger volumes, they can be at risk of more severe symptoms, including:
🤢 vomiting
🥵 dehydration
😵 confusion or seizures

If your dog shows any signs of unwellness after a beach visit, it’s best to consult our experienced team promptly. 🐕‍ 🏖️

Will your pet be visiting boarding facilities this summer? 🐶 😸

If so, it's best to check whether their vaccinations are still up to date (which is a compulsory requirement for most boarding facilities) at least one month prior.

If your pet's vaccinations are out-of-date, you'll have plenty of time to schedule a booster, with at least two weeks to take effect and provide optimum protection.

For personalised advice on the recommended vaccination protocol for your pet, consult our needle-sharp team! 🗓️

If Santa likes to leave chocolate gifts for your household, take extra care to ensure they are kept safely out of reach from any four-legged family members! 🎅🏼🍫

Unfortunately, pets cannot metabolise chocolate like we can, so quantities above a particular threshold lead to:
🤢 Vomiting
😯 Diarrhoea
❤️ Rapid heart rate

… and sometimes more severe, potentially fatal symptoms such as:
🧠 Seizures
❤️ Heart rhythm disturbances.

If you suspect your pet may have eaten chocolate, it’s best to phone our team immediately for further advice. 📞

With more cats out and about during summer, there is a higher risk of feline turf wars and associated injuries! 🏡 😼🏡

Cat bites tend to be particularly nasty- their needle-like canine teeth are capable of puncturing deep into the tissue and leaving behind bacteria. If not treated promptly, these bite wounds often become infected and painful. They could turn into an abscess requiring surgical treatment.

If you suspect your cat has been involved in a cat fight, bringing them in for a prompt check-up with our vets is best. We'll soon have them 'feline fine'! 😸
