The mobile vet idea started on May '17 with a home visit to Jio, a Maremma. Here they were used extensively to guard their flock against predators like wolves. They are very well suited for this role due to their protective nature and being suspicious of other animals or humans who are not from their mob. This particular morning I visited Jio for a health check and his annual immunizations. Despit

e him still being true to his nature, he was more "at home" and settled which made him a lot more fun to deal with. I drove away realising I see more pets that would appreciate a home visit just like Jio... and so the idea was born...

The gift of pet euthanasia | 🐾 I trust you understand what few can...
I leave a home visit with a trail of grieving people in my wake, and I feel a glow of satisfaction, because I know that I have done good and profound work. 🐾

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years -
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come, so let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve - it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years -
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

This kitty loves life. His love for his mum and her sewing almost cost him his life. Fortunately, he lives on to warn others like him. "Leave the sewing machine and that entertaining, yet dangerous ball of thread alone" Fortunately for him, he has a very astute owner. When he started vomiting, she mentioned his favourite pastime. This prompted us to look under his tongue, at what is referred to as the frenulum. And there it was. The thread anchored around the tongue. Next, the intestines plicate. If this isn't surgically corrected, a patient will ultimately develop life threatening peritonitis. The last picture shows the recovered pieces of thread.

We haven't posted about this aspect of our work before. It is such a sensitive issue, dear to our - and our clients' hearts.

I am referring to Euthanasia. More specifically, Home euthanasia and Quality of life assessment.

Last week I went to visit Hugo. He was, as so often the case, in his favourite place, surrounded by his favourite people. Hugo became too frail and the road ahead to steep.

In his mum's words, this was their final act of kindness for Hugo.

For us, it is always bitter-sweet. Ending a life which was so treasured and that brought so much love and joy. But, as the advocate for the pet, being able to prevent suffering and letting a pet go peacefully, affords us a sense of good and profound work.

Below: A photo of Hugo with his family.

What decent bin scavenger would leave an infused roast net alone?

These photos reminded me of what could happen to a bin scavenger. In this case the roast net got lodged in the front end of the small intestine. This puppy started vomiting profusely after scavenging. Fortunately, his astute owner took him to the vets before damage to the intestine occurred. The 1st photo was taken during surgery as the net was removed from the intestine.
