💛French Bulldog💛
If you are considering adding a Frenchie to your family, here are a few things to consider.
French Bulldogs are companion dogs, they don’t do well on their own, they love human contact, they are great with children, they are easy to train if you put the work in. They need structure, boundaries and lots of attention. If you don’t want a velcro dog then a Frenchie is not for you.
French bulldogs have been messed with so much in recent years , people have all but ruined the breed. People have stuck 2 dogs together, with no health testing and hoped for the best. They have created some pretty unhealthy pups, they have introduced genes to follow fashion trends and the original Standard French Bulldog is now the Rare one. The following information will hopefully educate new owners and help to stop Greeders ruining a beautiful breed
There are only 3 Standard Colours in French Bulldogs. Fawn, Pied and Brindle.
The Merle gene does not exist in French Bulldog DNA, it is a cross breed
The Big Rope Frenchie is a cross between French Bulldog and Shar pei..
The Fluffy is also a cross breed , although others will tell you different ! If the gene existed in French Bulldogs then why have fluffy’s only just started appearing ? Surely they would have been predominant in the breed since the beginning!
Pinks, Koi’s , Huskies, hairless, the list goes on and on and so does the issues caused by mixing genes
If you are buying a pup, look at the structure of the parents.
A few of the very basic things to consider are feet…. They should be tight and legs should be straight. I will show comparisons for you.
A Frenchie should have a small tail covering the A**s, if no tail is present it’s embedded inside the dog
Check parents for signs of Allergies, red paws, missing fur, red skin around eyes and mouth
Check temperament, friendly well behaved dogs
HEALTH TESTING
Always buy pups from fully health tested parents. I don’t mean a vet check, both parents should be DNA tested, RFG grade of 0-1, and FBCE minimum Silver level.
Paperwork should always be shown for both parents, if a breeder doesn’t show you this then walk away !
FBCE covers things like patella score, allergies, entropion, eyes, ears, and a lot more.
RFG paperwork should be dated no more than 12 months from birth of pups
Ask breeder to show you any previous litters they have bred and any issues they have had with pups.
Health testing isn’t a guarantee you will have a 💯 issue free pup, but it lessens the odds of an unhealthy pup dramatically.
PUPS
Picking a pup can be a difficult choice but your breeder should know what your family and lifestyle is like and should advise on the correct match for you .
A responsible breeder would never allow 2 pups from the same litter to be homed together, keep that in mind.
Also check how the pups are being raised, are they in a clean environment, are they well socialized and stimulated. Are they being toilet trained by the breeder.
Remember….all puppies are cute, but not all pups are healthy.
Frenchies can be quite destructive as pups and need eyes on at all times.
They need proper training and structure. They benefit greatly from joining puppy classes, they need a lot of attention, socialisation and good insurance coverage. They need a good quality food and regular vet check ups.
Adding a French Bulldog to your home can be the most rewarding thing for your family if you keep in mind the advice above. I’m always happy to answer any questions you might have
