Bella starting her recall training!
There are a few different ways you can teach a recall, one of the many ways I like to teach a young puppy recall is to play a game called the elastic recall.
To teach this, I start with a bit of focus from the pup, I then mark that focus and toss my reward away. Once the puppy has chased their reinforcement and eaten it, I say their name, then follow it quickly with the recall cue and start a little backwards movement. The puppy will then start moving towards me, once they come in and sit I mark it and toss the food again. This is a great way to teach them what the recall cue means, as the puppy will be able to associate the words with the action they are already doing, which is coming back to the handler.
Tossing the food or reinforcement serves two purposes, the first one is that it will reset the game, so you can call your puppy in again. The second purpose is that it adds more value to their reinforcement! Dogs think fun to chase things!
This can be something you do with your puppy inside the house, or outside with a long leash like we are doing with young Bella here.

Decompression walks are so important for dogs, especially anxious or reactive dogs.
Decompression walks aren't anything fancy, it's just time to sniff and relax! This will help our dogs regulate as well as help avoid any trigger stacking.
Today when I went to do Evie's break up her day session, there was a bit of work being done to the yard and noticed she was extremely stressed! So my original plan for our training session was scratched and I took her for some much needed decompression time! I knew that if I was to continue with my original plan, she would have gone over threshold and trigger stacked very easily.
Once she was relaxed, then we got into some training, just working some recall, stays, place and heel work.
Our dogs mental health has to be a priority, just like our own.
Do you do any decompression walks?

Cookie smashing her door manners yesterday!
Door manners is a must with dogs! I like it when dogs know that if the front door is open they can only go through when released.
Cookie has a history of barging through the front door and running on the very busy road, so this is something we address very quickly within her sessions. We started teaching her that the only way she gets to go through the door is when she is asked to, we practiced lots of different scenarios. Opening the door and not going out, opening the door, stepping out ourselves and going back inside and then stepping out and releasing her out as well.
Getting content is so something I always forget about, it's an after thought. I'm not much of a capturer, I take my dogs out and I'm usually not touching my phone, or thinking of filming or getting a photo. I'm just enjoying my time with them.
Today I took Ricky out for a random training session, and thought about maybe I could capture something cool, with no tripod I tried my hardest and I got lots of footage of the grass 😂
There are so many moments I wish I had on camera though, some of my favourite memories are exactly that, just memories.

Things I wish I did differently with my first dog and am actively doing with Ricky.
Crate training wasn't something I started with Kira until she was 3. I remember feeling so conflicted about it, but it has by fair been one of the best things I've done with them. The crate has given my dogs a safe place to go and we see it as their bed room. I always think that if I had crate trained Kira from the start it might have saved a lot of my furniture, Kira as a puppy ruined two couches and so many clothing items 🙈
Leashed greetings with unknown dogs, this definitely contributed to her leash reactivity, she started to assume she got to greet every dog we walked passed which made walking passed dogs so hard the older and bigger she got.
I wish I worked more on advocating for her, so she didn't need to.
And lastly dog parks! We had so many negative experiences at dog parks and it really did create alot of insecurity with other dogs.
What do you wish you did differently?

Some people might look at this video and see a jumping and excited dog who is getting cues wrong. But I love it, I love that he's jumping into me, I love watching him figure out what he has been asked to do and seeing his face light up when he gets it and I love that he's doing things his own Ricky way.
I love training with Ricky like this, I love the high energy and I love he's putting in 110%.
I train my dogs for two reasons, to be good canine citizens so I can enjoy taking them out in public and also because it's fun, it's an activity we both enjoy.
It's a slow process but it's a fun process.
It was when we went to put the dog crates in that we found out how bad the rust was in the tailgate.
This weekend's goal is to put the tailgate back on and hunt out anymore rust!
I keep telling the dogs that I'm doing this so their backyard will be endless ❤️ (they have no idea what I'm saying, but it makes me feel better when I leave them for the weekends 😂)

Dogs and kids?
It's all management and advocating, for everyone!
I use alot of my obedience with the dogs, stays, bed work, recall, a leave it and I also utilise my crates and a leash!
I use my recall and leave it to help advocate for the kids mostly, I have big dogs and they can be really intimidating for the kids.
I also use my crates and bed work as a way to advocate for the my dogs, if I notice the kids high pitch noises and running is too scary or exciting I might give the dogs a crate break with a frozen Kong.
By doing this for the dogs, it helps them learn what to do at certain times.
I never leave them along together, they're my dogs so where ever I go, they go. And if they can't, I will seperate them.
I'm also mindful about HOW I interact with my dogs, I don't do anything that I wouldn't want the kids to do. Monkey see, monkey do!
So even though I love playing tug with my dogs, it's all fetch when the kids are here as it's a much safer game for the kids to play with them.
Does your dog like little kids?
Mine definitely do not, though they do think the extra snacks is worth it 😅

Have you heard of something called drive satisfaction or drive control? Have you heard of something called a flirt pole or seen them online?
Flirt poles are one of my favourite tools! It's not only super fun to play with, but it's so beneficial for your high drive dog, it gives them an outlet to chase and catch things in a controlled environment so when out and about they don't look to satisfy it themselves, it's also amazing for teaching impulse control and teaching a dog to listen when they go into drive mode! As you can see here Ricky loves it! When I introduced this for Ricky the first thing I asked him to do was let go so we could do it again, then slowly I've increased our criteria with it, including things such as drop, sit, and stand stays while I use the toy to mimic prey.
