Thank you to Golden Home Stays for GRR’s invitation to attend their Golden Picnic on Saturday. What a wonderful Golden day with fun activities for the Goldens and their families. GRR caught up with families who had adopted a GRR rescue and Mindy’s family worked hard all day on the GRR stall, selling the 2026 collection of Calendars and other goodies while Mindy showed visitors the benefits of adopting a rescue.

Golden Home Stays supplied the Raffl,e and given that the prizes were for days, a weekend and a week to be spent at Golden Home Stays, the raffle was very popular, raising funds to help GRR care for the Goldies.

GRR was very happy to meet up with Ruby, the leaky puppy from RSPCA Victoria, who is now a Daddy’s girl. Thanks to the expertise of VSoS (Veterinary Specialists of Sydney), she is happy, healthy, and no longer leaky. Charlie called in to say thank you to GRR for finding him his forever family, as did Archie, who showed off his much-improved manners.

GRR helpers patted many soggy Goldies who had been having fun in the dog pool, and GRR sends our thanks to everyone who visited GRR’s Stall with their Goldens to learn about Foster Care and Adoption, and making purchases which help GRR care for the Goldens.

Such a great Golden Picnic. See you next year, Golden Home Stays.

Meet gorgeous Golden boy Cooper, who will be celebrating his fourth birthday in October. When Cooper arrived in foster care, he weighed over 50 kg. Over time, while in foster care, he has lost weight. After a vet check and blood tests showing a diagnosis of Hypothyroidism, Cooper is now on medication and is fit and healthy.

Cooper was ready to take his place in a forever home when the notification came from his intended family that a medical emergency had occurred, which means that this boy needs a new forever home and a family to love.

Cooper is currently in foster care on the Central Coast, NSW, where he spends his time playing with lots of Goldies. His favourites are Golden girls, so GRR is looking for a home where Cooper has a Golden sister and his family is home much of the time. Cooper would not be suitable for homes with male dogs.

Cooper travels well in the car, walks nicely on lead, loves cuddles, and is looking for a family who will ensure he takes his daily medication and has regular visits to their vet. Cooper has spent time around children (12 plus years) and is gentle.

If you are in NSW and think that Cooper would make a great fit for your family, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire, which can be found on the Contact page or Current Rescues page of GRR’s website www.grr.org.au

Happy International Dog Day!

While GRR celebrates Goldies every day, we wanted to share a lovely story about one of our Golden Oldies who is in permanent foster care.

Lady Gretel came to GRR earlier this year, having spent most of her life in a paddock with other goldies as part of an intensive breeding facility. When GRR got the call to ask if we would take her on, naturally, we said yes!

Gretel has severe hip dysplasia, a heart murmur and at 13 years of age, has lived a hard life up until recently.

When Gretel came to GRR, we were told she was an outside dog. But Lady Gretel had different ideas and now rules her new home like the lady she always wanted to be.

Gretel enjoys her meals and goes for trips in her Winnebago, so when she gets to the beach, she has energy to potter around, and she also insists on little walks to the park twice a day (rain, hail or shine).

Huge thanks to Gretel's GRR foster family for having such big hearts to take on an older girl with so many health issues.

So on this International Dog Day, we salute all Goldies, especially Lady Gretel, who, despite her awful past and her health issues, is the happiest old goldie you could ever hope to meet.

In 2021, a seven-month-old Golden boy named Gus came into GRR’s care requiring double elbow surgery. Gus was dropped off at VSoS (Veterinary Specialists of Sydney), where it was decided that operating on both elbows on the same day would be the best outcome for this boy. It may have been the best outcome for Gus, but his foster carer would beg to differ, as helping this oversized puppy to walk out to the toilet several times a day was daunting, as well as visiting VSoS regularly for bandage changes. Then came weeks of rehabilitation where Gus slowly took longer walks, and all the time Gus kept growing into a gorgeous, big, very big boy.

Three months after he arrived at GRR, Gus left for his forever home. His new family keep in regular contact,t and Gus’ foster carer is happy to hear that Gus is living his best life. It also appears that Gus continued to grow, becoming a big, handsome lad.

GRR was contacted by Gus’ family to advise that he had celebrated his fifth birthday. Happy Birthday, Gus. GRR would like to thank the Vet who contacted GRR all those years ago about this puppy and contributed towards his surgery. Thanks also to VSoS for their expertise in providing Gus with two sturdy legs to carry him on his adventures and to Gus’ family for providing him with the most wonderful forever home.

UPDATE ON CONNOR:

We have had a large number of applications to adopt the beautiful Connor. The Committee have undertaken a shortlist and we are in the process of contacting these families.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to apply!
______________________________________________________________________
Meet 9-month-old Connor, who is looking for a loving forever home in Queensland.

Applications for Connor will be accepted from people who live in the area from BRISBANE to the SUNSHINE COAST. Applications from outside this area will not be considered.

Connor was removed from an intensive breeding establishment at around 3 months of age and found himself in a scary shelter environment. He was placed in foster care with shelter carers, but spent his time hiding under tables and staircases.

The shelter called GRR when Connor was 7 months old because he had become so frightened of the world that he could not go on walks and had to be carried if he had to leave his home. Connor came into foster care with GRR carers and their two GRR Goldies, and it turns out that two happy social goldies were just the thing that Connor needed to bring him out of himself and learn how to be a real Goldie puppy!

Connor now enjoys daily walks with his foster goldies, and although timid when he meets strangers, he will sit for treats and usually warms up if people are kind and gentle with him. Around the home, Connor is just one of the gang and a typical Goldie puppy. He likes to dig ditches, play with soft toys, run around the yard, and much of his day is spent wrestling or playing with his foster brother and sister. And in typical Goldie style, he’s quite fond of his snacks and meals!

Connor is a sweet, sensitive, gentle little man who needs a home with at least one other Goldie. He has thrived since being in foster care with other social dogs, and he will need another Goldie who is similarly social with people and other dogs so he can have a role model and playmate.

Connor will need a quiet home where:
• The applicants live in the area from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast
• He has the company of people and at least one other dog
• He has space to play and wrestle
• His new owners have the time to commit to continuing his training and understand that he is a sensitive boy who needs encouragement and patience

To learn more about Connor and to apply, please check out his poster on GRR’s Current Rescues page http://www.grr.org.au/rescue2.html

Meet 7-year-old Buddy, who is looking for a loving forever home in Queensland. This is a different rehoming for GRR, as Buddy’s mother trusts only GRR to find this boy a home, and the area in which Buddy resides is Townsville.

Applications for Buddy will be accepted from CAIRNS TO MACKAY. Applications from outside this area will not be considered.

Buddy has always been an only dog. He has lived with a cat, has received training and is well socialised with other dogs. To learn more about Buddy and to apply, please check out his poster on GRR’s Current Rescues page www.grr.org.au/rescue1.html

We look forward to receiving applications for this gorgeous Golden boy.

It’s been a busy time at GRR with several Goldies going to their forever homes. Some of the rehomings came as quite a surprise to the foster carers as dogs that were considered “not ready to leave” met people, chose them as their own and left with them, much to the surprise of their families.

Abby surprised everyone when she went from being fearful of people to deciding that her new family’s dog, Bonnie, was her new sister and actually walking up to her new family for a pat.

Lady, now Millie, also decided that Joey, a former rescue from an intensive breeding facility, was the one she needed to show her how to be part of a family.

Archie also decided that the people who came to visit him were not going home without him, as this boy turned on his biggest Golden smile while waiting for paperwork to be completed.

Summer, a senior girl, found a home with Raya, a girl from a breeding facility and is currently showing her family how a 9-year-old can act like a youngster.

Brody, the boy frightened of everything, looks like the most relaxed Golden as he stretches out with yet another new toy.

Orlando, who recently underwent double cataract surgery, is now happily ensconced in a home where he enjoys stretching out on his back so his dad can give him tummy rubs.

Ruby, who stole everyone’s heart when she came to GRR as a 3-month-old leaky puppy, is now keeping her two Golden brothers in line and continues to win hearts wherever she goes.

Many of these Goldies were in foster care for several months, learning to trust humans after their lives in intensive breeding facilities, while others came from homes where their families could no longer care for them. One thing is sure - they have all found wonderful, forever homes.

From time to time, GRR receives emails from families who have adopted a rescue to advise that their much-loved Goldie has gone to Rainbow Bridge. While these are sad emails, they also reveal the love and joy these rescue Goldies have brought to the family, as well as the love and care they have received over many years.

GRR recently received contact from a family who adopted three-year-old Golden girl, Nala, in 2012. Over the years, GRR has received an occasional update on Nala, and recently, the post to advise that Nala had left for Rainbow Bridge arrived along with the arrival and departure day photos. Sad, of course, but thirteen years of life being part of a family was the best outcome GRR could possibly want for any of the Goldies that come into GRR’s care.

Many thanks are extended to an ACT Vet who contacted GRR to take Nala after a client signed over this girl to the vet instead of euthanising her. Having a busy life and career, the vet knew she didn’t have the time and commitment to give to this young Golden girl. After surrendering her to GRR, updates and photos on Nala’s progress with her adopted family were sent to the vet so she could see she had made the best decision for Nala.

In 2012, Nala’s story could have been very different,t but because people cared about a young Golden girl, Nala went on to live the life GRR wants for every Goldie that comes into our care.

BILLY THE BRAVE - LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME

Meet Billy the Brave. He had a grooming session so he can look his best for this FB post. Three years of Billy’s life have been spent on an intensive breeding facility, and nearly another year has been spent at GRR HQ learning to trust humans. Billy has no problem with dogs, ignores cats and has shared his yard with several Goldies who have now gone to their forever homes. Now it's Billy’s turn to find a home where people will be patient with him while he learns how to be part of a family. Billy has requested a quiet life and a Golden sister, which isn’t much for a four-year-old boy to ask.

You can find Billy’s poster on the GRR website https://www.grr.org.au/rescue6.html

Please remember that GRR looks for the right home for each dog's specific needs (not just any Goldie home). If you can provide a home that meets Billy's requirements, GRR would love to hear from you. You can apply to adopt Billy through our website.

Please note: We are unable to respond to queries about Billy on our page.

🐾 End of Financial Year – A Golden Opportunity to Give Back 🐾

Meet Orlando, Elsa, and Joey – three beautiful Goldies who came into GRR’s care after being rescued from an intensive breeding establishment. Despite their young age, all three were suffering from a range of health and emotional issues. Most heartbreakingly, each of them required double cataract surgery to have a chance at seeing the world clearly. With such specialist veterinarian care required, these operations and the necessary aftercare can be (understandably) expensive.

Huge thanks go to our incredible supporters, who generously donate to help the Goldies. Because of you, Orlando, Elsa, and Joey have had their sight saved—and even more wonderfully, they’ve each found their forever families, where they’re now thriving, loved, and finally living the happy golden lives they deserve.

As we approach the end of the financial year, we’re reminded how vital your support is. Every donation over $2 is tax-deductible, and every dollar helps us continue this life-changing work for Goldies who need our help.

👉 DONATE TODAY and help us give more golden retrievers their best chance at a happy, healthy future.

The goldies currently in our care – and those who will come to us in the year ahead – will be forever grateful for your kindness. 💛
