Coats...
One of the first things you notice on Tessie is her short coat. It doesn't hide anything. Our origin country (and our) Breed Standard asks for a short to medium coat. This coat is correct here. This coat would likely be less desirable, perhaps even penalised, under some other countries' Breed Standards/judges. It might even be overlooked here in the show ring. This coat can make a dog look to have less substance than a more coated dog. Hair helps in that department. Her coat is of correct texture coarse outercoat. (She is a little more naked out of coat right now and has less undercoat) A short coat is great on the farm. A short coat is 'honest'. You can't hide a thing. All flaws and virtues are on display equally. I often wonder what a show ring of Cardigans would look like, wash and wear, short coated like this. A skilled judges hands feel what full, groomed coat visually hides. Ringside, a beautifully groomed dog that takes your eye, might look good to you, and that might be skillful grooming, rather than correct structure. Judges look at movement which lets them see how that dog is built, whether balanced or not. They also look at breed qualities, because a flashy moving dog also needs to look like the breed. That's why our Breed Standard matters in a final decision.
Tessie is coat clear (fluff free) DM and PRA clear. W***y is coat clear, but has a tad more coat than Tessie. All progeny not at risk for DM or PRA from this pairing. Tessie is a little more matronly around the middle too, but our girls, when morning sickness hits, usually shed off any excess pounds, so I'm happy to see her have a bit extra right now.
