To understand how important the hoof is for the horse, you just need to think that in a 3-month-old fetus, this extremely specialized structure is already fully formed.

People call me all the time saying that they can’t find a farrier or they only show up once and they never come back. Usually there is a reason for this.

In person consultations are not free. Gas is not free and time is valuable. If you just want an assessment, there is a fee.

Just because your horse stands well for you to brush him and feed him treats does not necessarily mean he’s well behaved. If you have not trained him to have his feet handled it’s not the farriers job to do it. If he’s going to pull my back out and put me out of work and behind schedule for two weeks then I’m not going to wrestle with him, I’m going to dope him. Dope is $20 extra.

If you are not going to keep your horse on a schedule and are going to only call a farrier once they go lame or after they’ve gotten so long you are worried your neighbors are going to turn you in, it will cost extra if I can find a place in my schedule to work you in. I will not drop everything and shuffle regularly scheduled customers just because someone neglected their horses and now “need a farrier right now today “.

If I get your foundered horse on its feet again and then you proceed to neglect to have him regularly maintained or put him right back on grass to re-founder, I’m not going to waste my time.

Lots of people seem to think that farriers should be available at the spur of the moment, that our prices are negotiable. This is not true. It’s a highly skilled job. If you want to treat your farrier like a lawn boy, maybe you should see if your lawn boy wants to trim your horse.

This 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 It is not your Farriers job, to handle your horses legs and feet and teach them to stand.

EQUESTRIAN QUEENALAND CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATE – 31 March 2020

Equestrian Queensland will continue to provide members with regular updates regarding the evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

On Sunday 29 March 2020, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced further restrictions on Non-essential Gatherings.

The advice;

Stay at home unless you are;
• Going to work or education (if you are unable to do so at home)
• Shopping for essential supplies such as groceries, return home without delay
• Going out for personal exercise in the neighbourhood, on your own or with one other
• Attending medical appointments or compassionate visits.

https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others-from-coronavirus-covid-19/limits-on-public-gatherings-for-coronavirus-covid-19

Further to the above the Queensland Government also issued a Home Confinement Direction on 29 March 2020;

The direction requires all Queensland residents to stay in their homes except for:
• shopping for essentials - food and necessary supplies;
• medical or health care needs, including compassionate requirements;
• exercise with no more than one other person (unless from your household);
• providing care or assistance to an immediate family member;
• work and study if you can’t work or learn remotely.

https://www.health.qld.gov.au/system-governance/legislation/cho-public-health-directions-under-expanded-public-health-act-powers/home-confinement-direction

We also note the additional public health direction and advice from Queensland Health;
• Restriction in Private Residences Direction – That no more than 10 people be present at the residence at any one time
https://www.health.qld.gov.au/system-governance/legislation/cho-public-health-directions-under-expanded-public-health-act-powers/restrictions-in-private-residences-direction

Therefore Equestrian Queensland provides the following advice;

• All Equestrian Queensland affiliated events are to be suspended until further notice
• If you can stay home, you should stay home
• If you need to travel to care for your horse/s, including food, water, exercise etc. you need to comply with all Commonwealth and State health directives
• That members who provide agistment services from their place of residence need to comply with the Restriction in Private Residences Direction from Queensland Health and ensure that no more than 10 people are present at any one time whilst complying with social distancing and hygiene requirements
• That clubs and commercial affiliates who provide agistment services from their property need to comply with the government directions, social distancing and hygiene requirements
• That all activity should occur on the property where the horse is located i.e. do not transport your horse to attend a riding lesson
• That coaches conduct lessons with a single student only at the property where the horse is located and in accordance with all government restrictions, social distancing, hygiene requirements and guidelines from Equestrian Australia and Equestrian Queensland
• That veterinarians and other professional services such as farriers are permitted to attend properties as required whilst complying with all government restrictions, social distancing and hygiene requirements

It is important to note that this information is for members located in Queensland. The public health restrictions and advice determined by each state government may be and sometimes is different state to state.

This advice is subject to change as new advice becomes available.

Please check the Queensland Health website for updates https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19

We take this opportunity to advise members that should you require any support or guidance, please contact us on [email protected]

Heels grow forward, not down. As farriers, we've all heard owners request (or in some instances demand) "don't touch the heels", or "take all the toe you can but leave the heel", also we occasionally hear some trainer or self taught farrier saying the same sort of baloney.
Such a statement is a pretty good indicator that the person knows next to nothing about a horse's hoof and is just parroting what they've been told from some other yahoo. As heels grow forward, the base of support moves forward as well.
This contributes to the development of the exact hoof type the "leave all the heel" genius is trying to avoid. I've followed farriers who were fired for allegedly taking too much heel, when in fact they were taking no heel, just as they were told, and that was the problem. (That and they decided it was easier to go along to get along rather than attempt to educate someone who was already so confident in their knowledge on the subject.)
So this is like a PSA. "Leave all the heel you can" tells you the person knows as much about a horse's hoof as a person telling a NASA engineer they oughta attach a windmill to the next space shuttle to save on fuel. Just stop.

When the difference between winning or losing depends on your horse’s speed and athleticism, every measure you can take to ensure your horse’s health and safety is paramount.

Caring for your horse’s feet is far more than slapping four metal shoes on the hooves and calling it a day!
In this case, Barrel racers should know the importance of getting the horse’s hoof care just right, because it can make or break your performance. A comfortable horse will always perform better.

This is RHPPS Catastrophee aka Cat or Big Mumma.
Sire: Starlights Cow Smart
Dam: Hey Beni TB (Northern Dancer x Pago Pago lines)

Cat is an Open and 1D Barrel Race winner, Sprint Racing winner, Campdrafting and Cutting mare, she is a very versatile athlete and is treated as such.

Lisa Sutton "We are often down to the hundredths of a second between first or second, anyone competing literally needs every advantage they can get. The competition is tough, so if I can ensure that the S Therapy Method divine balance points are taken care of, which is your horses head, body, feet and nutrition, I know I have an advantage and the rest is up to me. If by taking care of all of those things I can make my horses more comfortable, they’ll feel better and run more correctly, be able to remain calm thus allowing them to compete for a lot longer.

I am extremely fussy about who goes near Cat for any kind of treatment or care. Edited to add: that shoeing has always been a family affair primarily with Steve shoeing the horses, aside from about 3 occasions. And whilst James is my partner, it doesn't change the fact that I love my horses and want the best care I can have and that they are athletes and need to be treated as such. Without bias, James does a really great job with her feet, is thorough and understands the importance of a balanced hoof, and for those reasons alone, I highly recommend the farrier work he does."
