Although I always suggest people address the cause of barking rather than masking the symptoms, out of every bark stop device I actually find Citronella collars the most disturbing.

Spraying a substance that is poisonous into your dogs face, eyes and nose not only has potential behavioural and health fallout, it is also dangerous for us humans as well.

The fact these collars are marketed as a humane alternative is also deeply disturbing.

If your dog is problem barking and you feel tempted to use something like a citronella collar or ultrasonic collar/birdhouse device(I also have a list of reasons these devices come in a close second to citronella collars) please look at your dogs reasons for this behaviour first and consider more enrichment, the potential for anxiety and even environmental barriers to stop overstimulation.

Come down to dog training classes or always feel free to message my page if you feel stuck with your dogs barking and would like some help, there’s many more humane and fair options rather than citronella or ultrasonic devices 🥰

Citronella collars are often marketed as a cruelty-free alternative to electric bark collars, promising a humane way to curb unwanted barking. However, this portrayal is misleading. While they may seem harmless, the reality is that citronella collars can inflict prolonged suffering on dogs, especially those with sensitive hearing and small breeds.

Dogs have a highly sensitive sense of smell, significantly more acute than humans. When a citronella collar sprays, it not only startles the dog but also leaves a strong scent that clings to their fur for days. This constant exposure to the overpowering scent can be distressing and confusing, leading to increased anxiety rather than reducing barking. Moreover, the sudden spray of citronella can cause dogs to become fearful, associating the sensation with ordinary actions like barking, which is a natural behavior.

Additionally, citronella collars are not as effective as their marketing suggests. While they may temporarily stop barking, they do not address the underlying causes of the behavior. Dogs might bark out of fear, boredom, or excitement, and simply masking the symptom does nothing to resolve the root issue. In fact, the use of such collars can exacerbate the problem by causing further stress and behavioral issues.

Ultimately, citronella collars are a deceptive and inhumane option for bark control. Rather than opting for quick fixes, dog owners should focus on understanding their pet's needs and using positive reinforcement techniques to address unwanted behaviors. This approach not only resolves the barking but also fosters a healthier and happier relationship between the dog and its owner.

Just got in more of one of my favourite products!

The 10m long Biothane long lines.

These leads are incredibly strong, water proof, smell proof and if they get muddy you just run water over them and they’re good as new.

With a textured surface they’re easy to grip and their bright colours make them easy to see when out with your dogs.

Perfect for recall training, camping, walking on beaches/areas where dogs have to stay on lead, exploring fields etc near roads, scent detection training, for dogs who just aren’t 100% trustworthy off lead yet and more

I’ve also got other colours available and standard leads in the same material as well as collars and shorter long leads, so you can get a whole set in the same colours.

Exciting news!!

I’m now offering engraved dog tags for both local clients and postage 🎉

Due to my commitment to trying to reduce roaming dogs in the area I’ll be charging my lowest possible price and these tags will only be $5 each!

I’m also doing an introductory deal where if you purchase any collar, lead etc you can have 1 dog tag for free per item 🙂

I’ll be bringing the machine along to the Blackwater Christmas In July Markets on the 14th so you can come down and get your tag engraved on the spot.

These chews are great for dogs who love to chew sticks or need a no calorie alternative to long lasting treats.

The Coffee Wood has no caffeine and instead of splintering like normal wood/sticks which can cause injuries and blockages, it comes off in fibrous, soft and safe pieces.

Dog Training Classes Tonight at 7pm!

Last week we did a range of things in class including having some of the class practising a “place” command and some learning about loose leash walking and engagement.

Classes can be very versatile depending on who is there and what people want to work on, so never stress about your dog knowing too little or too much! Everyone is welcome 🤗

FREE EDUCATION SESSION!

With a few of the issues regarding roaming dogs in Blackwater recently I’ve decided I’d love to run a bit of a free info session for people to come along to.

This would be informal and just an hour for people to come and learn a bit about how to interact with loose dogs and what the best course of action is if a dog approaches you in an aggressive way.

Hoping to cover:
- How to assess if a dog may not be friendly.
- What to do if a dog is approaching you, especially in an aggressive manner.
- Methods to break up a dog fight as safely as possible.
- Ways to keep yourself and others safe if a dog is acting aggressively.
- Common reasons for dog attacks and what not to do.
- Q&A session related to discussed subjects.

As a 2x certified Dangerous Dog Handler and Assessor I’d really love to get more information out there in the community to help people who feel threatened or harassed by loose dogs, as well as how to protect their dogs on a walk.

This session will run 5pm tomorrow(Tuesday) night and will only run for an hour as I have scent detection classes to run at 6:30pm and obedience at 7pm.

This will not be a training session, No dogs allowed and if you are a client from Emerald coming to dog training classes and want to attend before class message me and we will sort out keeping your dog entertained.

Please be aware if you do bring children they must be quiet and supervised, some things discussed may also be disturbing for some children so really consider if it’s appropriate for them.

I am also looking at running an info session on how to contain escaping dogs, separation anxiety and general pet care in the future but for now just wanted to offer something for the community in light of all the unfortunate events around loose dogs recently.

Different long leads for different uses!

I’ve now got 3m long leads in stock, these leads are lighter weight and thinner than the 10m leads and fit perfectly in the Salty Paws Dog Training Pouch I’ve also got in stock, along with some toys, keys and phone.

These aren’t as heavy duty as my 25mm wide 10m long leads and I don’t suggest them for giant breeds or heavy pullers.

They’re perfect for giving you enough control for street walks but still allowing room for sniffs, this can reduce pulling in itself.

I also got to really appreciate the 10m long leads recently after a visit to Great Keppel Island with Amara, this lead gave her the freedom to explore and get a good sprint up without breaking leash laws or risking her ruining anyone’s sun bake.

These are a heavy duty leash and at the end of the day the sand and mud just wipes off the waterproof, easy to clean material.

The best part of these leads is they don’t hold smell either!

3m long leads are $40 each and currently come in orange, navy blue and black with a gold hook on the end

10m long lines are now $80 each after an increase in manufacturing costs
