We love our little Bristlenose here at FCA.

Very rarely though do we see any of our Peppermint’s. For those that don’t know they are the black with white spots.

Here we have one of our “Peps” Pepé Le Pew, our super red “Clifford” (cos he’s big and red 😉), Elsa the albino longfin and our baby lemon blue eyes Anna. Annnnnd some photobombers in the background. 📸

FCA would like to introduce our newest member of the family Geoph. Yes that’s Geoff with a “ph”. His name fitting as he is a Geophagus Surinamensis otherwise known as a red horseface cichlid found wildly in South America. 🐟

He is much bigger than the rest of our fishy family but also a big softy and fitting in well. 🐠

Monday, and schools back in 📚

Tonight at FCA 🐠 we are talking about tank maintenance 🧰. Although not recommended, it is possible to do water changes and filter cleans together if managed correctly. We regularly do this with our 4 aquariums. With years of experience we’ve got it down to a fine art, focusing on washing our media in tank water and dosing our tank with our beneficial bacteria.

If not managed correctly you could potentially put your tank into a mini-cycle, which will cloud your water and could cause you problems with your fish.

Monday, and “schools” in at Fully Cichlid. Pun intended! 📚✏️🎓

The most important part of any aquarium, wether it be fresh or salt water, could be put down to the nitrogen cycle. It’s where everything starts and has an important part to play in almost every aspect of fish keeping.

Food, waste and decaying plants break down into Ammonia (NH3) which is then consumed by beneficial bacteria and converted into Nitrite (NO2), both of which are extremely harmful to your lil fishy friends, even in small amounts 🏥 😧
From there, a different type of beneficial bacteria convert the Nitrite to Nitrate (NO3), which is more tolerable by the fish, but harmful in higher levels. Nitrate is removed from the tank through water changes, consumed by plants, and is the end of the nitrogen cycle.

Regular testing with test kits and dosing your tank with beneficial bacteria like Seachem Stability, are the best ways to maintain your cycle along with regular tank maintenance.

Fully Cichlid isn’t just all about Cichlid’s we also love our Bristlenose (Ancistrus) and Pleco’s (Plecostomus) not to be confused with each other although very similar.

Here we have 3 of our Bristlenose. Little whiskers, Pope and TB feeding on some Zucchini. A regular treat for our little bristlenose friends 🥒

We’ll introduce big whiskers soon. Our Sailfin Pleco is one of the stars of our tank 🌟

🧪 # 👨🏽‍🔬

Fully Cichlid isn’t just about our fresh water fishy friends, we also dip our toes in saltwater too!

We have recently started growing our own phytoplankton. On the left we have a batch put on today, and on the right, one ready to harvest tomorrow. (Pic 1)

For those that don’t know, phyto (in a short answer) is microscopic marine algae. It plays a substantial role in more than most would think… But for marine aquarists it’s use is mainly revolved around keeping our corals healthy, and feeding zooplankton like copepods.

Copepods themselves play a vital role in aquaria. They are microscopic crustaceans that feed on coarse organic matter, detritus and algae (not just our phyto) helping keep your tank clean. But that’s not all they do, they also provide a food source for fish like Mandarins (pics 4 & 5). We have two tanks growing pods, that we regularly dose our salt water tank with.

We’re excited to see this little beauty grow and confirm wether it’s a boy or girl. Too early to tell at this stage.
