As our pets age, they need extra care and attention to ensure their golden years are comfortable. Here are some signs that it's time to schedule a vet visit for your senior pet:

🐾 Behavioural Changes: Sudden withdrawal, anxiety or aggression may indicate pain or discomfort.
🐾 Changes in Appetite or Weight: Noticeable weight gain/loss or refusing food is a red flag.
🐾 Difficulty Moving: Stiffness, limping or reluctance to jump could mean joint issues.
🐾 Increased Thirst or Urination: These can be symptoms of diabetes or kidney problems.
🐾 Lumps or Bumps: New or changing growths should be checked by your vet.

Anticipatory Grief 💔

Knowing that you have limited time left with your beloved pet can cause stress and anxiety. Families with terminally ill or geriatric pets can experience 'anticipatory grief', and may feel a range of emotions including fear, guilt, anxiety and anger. This is normal, but it can also interfere with your ability to enjoy the remaining time you have with your pet. 🐾

The best way to deal with anticipatory grief is through preparation and planning. Making decisions about euthanasia such as where it should take place and who you would like to be present can ease anxiety and help your pet. You might also decide to embark on a 'bucket list' of experiences with your pet to create some special memories.

We recommend that you chat to your vet regarding your pet's quality of life, so that you can make decisions about euthanasia in your own time and on your terms. We also have access to counselling services and other resources to help guide you through this difficult decision. 💙
