We've continued to expand in 2015 taking on board a resident, Dr Rebecca Tucker. Dr Tucker has quickly made a place for herself in the practice, and provides another great mind and set of hands to our business - allowing Advanced Animal Dentistry to provide more help to Australian pets. Dr Wilson retired in 2018, and left with AAD his legacy, and Australia in a stronger position with Veterinary Dentistry. Dr Tucker became full partner with Dr Forsayeth and together they have taken AAD forward.

🐾 Did You Know? Understanding Malocclusions in Dogs and Cats 🐾

Let's break down the four main types of malocclusions you might encounter in dogs and cats:

Class 1 Malocclusion (Neutrocclusion):

🦷 The jaws are correctly aligned, but individual teeth are misaligned.
🦷 Common issues include crossbites, where teeth from the upper jaw are positioned inside the teeth from the lower jaw.

Class 2 Malocclusion (Overbite or Brachygnathism):

🦷 The lower jaw is shorter than the upper jaw.
🦷 This causes the upper front teeth to overlap the lower front teeth, often leading to trauma and difficulty eating.

Class 3 Malocclusion (Underbite or Prognathism):

🦷 The lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw.
🦷 This results in the lower front teeth protruding in front of the upper front teeth, which can cause wear and tear on the teeth and gums.

Class 4 Malocclusion (Asymmetric Malocclusion):

🦷 The upper and lower jaws are misaligned side-to-side, resulting in a wry bite.
🦷 This type of malocclusion often leads to uneven wear and discomfort, affecting your pet's ability to chew properly.

Regular dental check-ups are crucial to identify and address these issues early. If you notice any signs of dental discomfort in your pets, like difficulty eating or reluctance to chew, consult your veterinarian. Your furry friend's smile deserves the best care! 😺🐶✨

⚠ ROOT CANAL THERAPY ⚠

🦷 Explanation:

• Root Canal Therapy (RCT) is performed when a tooth has been fractured, the pulp has been exposed, and the tooth is dying or dead.
• RCT is preferred for clients interested in retaining the tooth rather than opting for extraction.
• The procedure involves cleaning out the organic material (necrotic pulp) from the canal, sterilizing and drying the canal, and then filling it with a root canal filling material. Check out our step by step radiographs of this process!!
• For more information, please visit www.animaldental.com.au/services/endodontics.

🦷 Follow up:

• The patient will require initial follow-up radiographs in 6 months to monitor the health of the surrounding bone.
• We recommend continuing follow-up radiographs throughout the patient's life during routine dental cleanings (every 12-18 months).

So lovely working with Dr Kieren on this case!

We can do hard things - Meet Archie, a very sweet miniature dachshund who needed some essential dental care with Dr Rebecca Tucker at Advanced Animal Dentistry.

Archie is nearly 15 years old and had previously had some very low blood pressure during an anaesthetic. Maintaining normal blood pressure is one of the important tasks you pet’s anaesthesiologist will manage during an anaesthetic. Ensuring adequate blood flow to organs like the kidneys, liver and brain avoids complications during and after anaesthesia.

In Archie’s case we needed to work hard to keep his pressures in the normal range and managed to do this by continually adjusting the type and dose of anaesthetic agent as well as giving some supplemental intravenous fluids and extra medications. Most importantly we were monitoring his blood pressure and other vital signs the whole way through the procedure so we knew when and how to intervene.

Archie was a rock star - he woke up quickly and smoothly and spent some time hanging out under some heated blankets having cuddles with me while I finished off his anaesthetic record.

Shout out to an amazing pet owner! 🎉🐶

This young man was battling significant periodontal disease, resulting in multiple extractions and early tooth loss. But thanks to his incredibly diligent mum, who takes the time to manually brush his teeth every single day, we've seen an incredible turnaround! 🦷✨

This dedication to daily homecare has not only stabilised his condition but also led to some bone regrowth. This is a fantastic example of how dental care can make a world of difference. We are so thrilled to see these results!! 👏

🦷🐱 Did you know animals can have extra teeth? These are called supernumerary teeth. 🦷

Extra teeth can sometimes cause issues like crowding, misalignment and discomfort. If you notice your pet has more teeth than usual, a vet visit can help ensure their dental health is on track.

Swipe through the pictures to see examples of supernumerary teeth in cats!

Treatment, in most cases, involves extracting the additional tooth/teeth to prevent problems.

We recommend annual veterinary check-ups to keep your pet's teeth and overall health in top shape.

🌺 Lest We Forget 🌺

Today, on ANZAC Day, we pause to remember and pay tribute to the brave soldiers, past and present, who have served and sacrificed for our nations. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten. 🇦🇺🇳🇿

But let's also take a moment to honour another group of heroes often overlooked—the animals who have served alongside our soldiers. From loyal dogs and horses to carrier pigeons and camels, these faithful companions played crucial roles in wartime efforts, offering support, comfort, and even saving lives.

To all those who have served, human and animal alike, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your sacrifices have paved the way for the freedoms we cherish today.

Lest we forget. 🕊️

🐾 Attention, pet lovers! 🐾

Ever wondered what a fractured left maxillary canine with an associated draining sinus means for a young pup like this one? Let's break it down:

This adorable 3-month-old puppy has a fractured left upper canine tooth, which has died and formed an abscess at the root. This has then created a draining sinus in the gum tissue. When a tooth fractures, it can create a pathway (sinus tract) that allows fluid to escape into the surrounding gum tissue.

Possible reasons for the tooth fracture include accidents during playtime, chewing on hard objects, or even developmental issues. Puppies are curious explorers, and sometimes their enthusiasm leads to unexpected mishaps.

If left untreated, the fractured tooth can pose risks to the developing adult tooth underneath. It can also be painful for the pup and become infected, leading to further complications.

However, the problem tooth was extracted, and the pup has made a full recovery!

⚠️ Graphic Content Warning ⚠️

🦷 Dental Health Alert! 🦷

Ever heard of an unerupted mandibular canine?

Recently, our furry friend here had a dental radiograph that revealed an unerupted mandibular (lower jaw) canine tooth. 🐶

This means that despite being fully formed, the tooth hasn't made its way through the gum tissue to take its rightful place in the mouth.

Why might a tooth fail to erupt? There are several possible reasons, including trauma as a young dog to the jaw or issues with the associated deciduous (baby) tooth, such as fracture or infection, preventing the permanent tooth from emerging.

But why is it crucial to address this issue? Well, one potential complication is the formation of a dentigerous cyst, which can develop around the unerupted tooth. This cyst can cause significant damage to the jawbone and surrounding structures if left untreated.

That's why extraction of the unerupted tooth is essential. By removing the affected tooth, we can prevent potential complications such as cyst formation and associated damage to the jaw.

We're happy to report that our patient has undergone treatment and is on his way to a full recovery!

🐾🦷 Dental Insights: Traumatic Class 2 Malocclusion 🦷🐾

Class 2 Malocclusion means the Mandible (lower jaw) is shorter than it should be, resulting in what's commonly known as an overbite.

This condition varies in severity, influencing the recommended treatment.

In this case, the pup, only 3 months old, had both the mandibular deciduous (baby) canines and all six deciduous incisors causing trauma to the palate.

To address this, the treatment involved the extraction of those teeth to alleviate any discomfort.

We will reassess this pup once the adult teeth start to erupt (approximately 5 months of age) to evaluate if further intervention is required. 🩺💙

Dr Rebecca Tucker is coming close to the end of her formal residency, and Dr Aaron Forsayeth was finally granted permission to start a residency in Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery - the first person to ever do so. Advanced Animal Dentistry loves teeth!
