⚠️ Graphic Content Warning ⚠️

🚨 Case Spotlight: A Close Call! 🚨

This adventurous pup got into trouble after trying to grab the tyre of a moving truck. The accident caused several serious injuries:
🦷 Maxilla (upper) left canine pushed up into the nasal cavity
🦴 Fractures with bone fragment displacement of the maxilla (upper) jaw
👀 (In one of the photos, you can even see the tip of the displaced canine!)

Our team extracted the damaged canine and other affected maxillary teeth, carefully managed the fracture, and we’re thrilled to say he’s made a full recovery and is back to his happy, playful self 🐾💙

Let’s hope he’s learned his lesson and keeps well away from truck tyres in future! 🚛❌🛞

🐾 Did You Know? Understanding Malocclusions in Pets 🐾

Malocclusions—misaligned teeth or jaws—can affect all animals, not just dogs and cats. These misalignments can be traumatic and uncomfortable, but our pets are often very stoic and excellent at hiding pain. Regular dental checks are key to keeping them healthy and comfortable!

Here’s a quick guide to the four main types of malocclusions:

🦷 Class 1 Malocclusion (Neutrocclusion)
• The mandible (lower jaw) and maxilla (upper jaw) are properly aligned, but individual teeth are misaligned.
• Anterior crossbites may occur, where one or more mandibular incisors (small front teeth) sit in front of the maxillary incisors when the mouth is closed.
• Linguoverted mandibular canines are common—these teeth tilt inward toward the tongue instead of following their normal outward angle.

🦷 Class 2 Malocclusion (Overbite / Brachygnathism)
• The mandible is shorter than the maxilla.
• Because of this, the mandibular canines sit too far back and may impact the palate (roof of the mouth) instead of being in their correct position, fitting in front of the maxillary canines.
• If the mandibular canines impact the palate, over time it may cause significant damage and even communication with the nasal cavity, leading to chronic infections.

🦷 Class 3 Malocclusion (Underbite / Prognathism)
• The mandible is longer than the maxilla.
• Mandibular incisors protrude in front of the maxillary, leading to wear, gum issues, and discomfort.
• The maxillary incisors can impact the floor of the mouth, potentially causing trauma.

🦷 Class 4 Malocclusion (Asymmetric Malocclusion)
• Upper and lower jaws are misaligned side-to-side, creating a wry bite.
• Causes uneven wear and can make chewing uncomfortable.

✅ If your pet shows signs of discomfort or difficulty chewing, it could be a malocclusion. Early detection is vital!

🐾 Understanding Tooth Resorption (TR) in Cats 🐾

Up to 60% of cats over 5 years old may develop tooth resorption – a painful condition where the body begins breaking down the tooth structure.

In the case shown here, an obvious resorptive lesion could be seen on the left mandibular canine (pictured). But with dental radiographs, we discovered that both mandibular canines were affected and required treatment.

This is why radiographs are essential – what you see above the gumline is often just part of the story.

🦷 Subtle signs like fussiness with food, pawing at the mouth, or changes in behaviour shouldn’t be ignored – regular dental checks keep your cat pain-free. 💙

🦷 Myth buster: “If a pet stops eating, it must be their teeth.” Not necessarily!

It’s a common misconception — but in reality, most pets with dental pain continue to eat. They may chew differently, avoid certain textures, or eat more slowly, but rarely stop eating altogether just because of oral discomfort.

So if your pet isn’t eating, it’s important to have them assessed — but don’t automatically assume it’s their teeth. Many health issues can affect appetite, and a thorough veterinary exam is the best way to find out.

Signs that may point to dental discomfort include:
🔹 Chewing on one side
🔹 Drooling or dropping food
🔹 Pawing at the mouth
🔹 Bad breath

✅ Regular dental checks help catch problems early — before obvious signs appear.

2017 saw expansion into two new established Veterinary Referral Hospitals - Veterinary Specialist Services at Jindalee, and Queensland Veterinary Specialists in North Lakes. Through the year recognistion finally came for Dr Gary Wilson’s amazing knowledge and experience in all Veterinary Dentistry, with him being recognised as a Registered Specialist. Dr Rebecca Tucker is coming close to the end of her formal residency, and Dr Aaron Forsayeth was finally granted permission to start a residency in Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery - the first person to ever do so. Advanced Animal Dentistry loves teeth!
