🌿 Does your cat LOVE to hunt??? 🌿
✨️An indoor lifestyle for a cat is safe for both cats and our native wildlife.....
But it is important to still give them activities that replicate the outdoors🌿 and their very strong need to hunt! It helps to satisfy their mind & their tummy.
✨️ This doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Household rubbish can be made into puzzles that replicate lizards and bugs in logs, just like this toilet roll treat puzzle. Dr Leonies cats, Ernie (the tabby), and Bert (black pantha) love catching their pretend bugs and lizards!

✨ The 12 Toxins of Christmas ✨
Artificial Sweetener
🍭🍭🍭🍭
It's certainly not the season to be "watching your weight", but keep those "Sugar-Free" foods well away from your fur babies. The artificial sweeteners, such as Xylitol, often used those items can cause sever upset to our patients whole body system! Even in small doses! The "sweetness" causes the body to release extra insulin, sending the body into a hypoglycaemic episode which presents as lethargy, weakness & tremors. Sever cases can also develop liver failure & seizures.
Treatment includes careful monitoring, IV fluids & medications to combat the hypoglycaemia & treat the potential neurological & liver damage.

✨ The 12 Toxins of Christmas ✨
Foreign Bodies! 🎄🎄🎄
I think we all know the allure of beautiful Christmas decorations to our puppies & kittens but they can pose a threat if swallowed or chewed a bit *too* much. Foreign materials refers to anything that is NOT digestible & can cause a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract. This can be tinsel, decorations, wrapping paper & wrapping ribbon, cards or packaging from other presents. Our smaller pets are slightly higher at risk due to the smaller size of their gastric system & their playful nature!
If your pet ingests something or your are suddenly missing a piece of decoration they once were playing with - bring them into the vet. Depending on what it was, we may not be able to induce emesis (vomiting) as some harder materials can cause further irritation on their way back up. In this case, radiographs are the best way to determine if there is something in there or if it has start to cause a blockage.
So.... keep the toys handy on Christmas day to re-direct that playful nature onto something more safe & rewarding for furbaby 💜

✨ The 12 toxins of Christmas ✨
Did you know – Onions & Garlic can make your furry friends very sick!🧄🧅🧄🧅
Onion & Garlic contain organosulfur compounds that can cause damage to the red blood cells in dogs and cats, and because of this, pets who ingested a toxic amount of onion will show signs of lethargy, exercise intolerance, and in severe cases, sudden collapse.
How much onion is toxic to my animal?
Toxicity is consistently noticed in dogs that ingest over 0.5% of their body weight of fresh onion, which is equivalent to 50g of onion in a 10kg dog. Cats are much more sensitive to onion toxicity than dogs, and ingesting 5g/kg or more of onion is considered a risk for toxicity.
How about fried onions?
Unfortunately, all forms of onion can cause toxicity, such as fried onion rings, dehydrated onions, onions that are mixed in stews and even onion powder. Additionally, other vegetables, for example, garlic chives and leek, that are related to onion within the Allium spp can also cause similar toxicity. 🧅🧄
What to do if my animal had eaten onion?
If you notice your dog or cat ingesting onion, take them to your veterinarian as soon as possible! If this is done in time, your onion eater may be spared from the symptoms of onion toxicosis mentioned above and a few days of intense hospitalization.

✨The 12 toxins of Christmas! ✨
Raisins, Grapes & Sultanas
🍇🍇🍇🍇
One of the lesser know toxic foods for our pets is Raisins, grapes & sultanas! Unfortunately, there is not a know "toxic level" for these guys, with symptoms ranging from vomiting & diarrhoea to anorexia, dehydration & even reports of Renal failure occurring within 24-48hrs!!
Treatment includes inducing emesis (vomiting) asap after consumption to reduce the risk to the body, intensive fluid therapy to flush out the toxic effects & close monitoring of Renal Blood parameters.
So for those that love a little bit of extra Christmas Pud.... please don't share any with your fur baby 💜

✨ 12 Toxins of Christmas ✨
Macadamia nuts
🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜
While they are delicious, they can be dangerous if our dogs sneak a treat. Within just a few hours of eating them, they may suffer weakness, vomiting, tremors, a depressed mental state, a wobbly gait, or hyperthermia.
There is no known anti-dote. However, affected pets may require supportive care care to help them recover more quickly. Fortunately, death has not been reported, and all dogs return to normal within 1-2 days.
Another factor to be aware of is the potential for a nut to get stuck in the intestine, which presents a completely different risk, just like when a dog swallows a hard toy and it gets stuck. This can be life-threatening due to the obstruction of digestive processes and potential rupture of the intestine.

✨ 12 Toxins of Christmas - an advent calendar of information ✨
Next up is..... Christmas ham 🍖
It is very tempting to give your furry family member the ham bone once the human family has had their fill for Christmas. While it may seem a benign thing to do, it may not be a great idea! Cooked bones are much more likely to get stuck in a dog’s intestine if ingested, and this is definitely the riskiest part of eating leftover ham bones.
In addition to this; many hams are very salty and fatty, which can trigger an episode of gastroenteritis or even pancreatitis in your dog.
So, to play it safe, purchase a doggy chew and wrap it up as a special Christmas treat to have instead of the ham bone and put the bone in the bin!
