We bought the Aspley Veterinary Pactice from Dr Richard (Harley) Lomax in 1997. At the time it was in an old wooden Queenslander on Gympie Road where Harley had practiced for nearly 30 years. When Harley began practice there was no veterinarian to the north of him until you reached Townsville. Since 1997 we have built a new facility, replaced all the equipment, and introduced highly trained nurses

. Aspley is now able to offer full service patient care with veterinary and nursing staff on-site six days a week; dedicated surgery suite; in-house biochemistry and haematology analysis, and dedicated hospital facilities for patients needing to stay with us. The most valuable asset we gained from the old practice was Dr Jill Retell who continues practising today

We offer a comprehensive range of services including:

General consultations
Vaccinations
Routine desexings
Soft tisssue surgery
Dental procedures
In house pathology (including blood tests)
Puppy Preschool
Weight Loss Club
Preventative health care advice
Nutrition advice

Clinic’s (including ourselves) have bare minimum supplies on hand but this could run out quickly.

SO PLEASE HAVE YOUR PETS ON A TICK PREVENTION!

If you are unsure if your pet is up-to-date, then it means there's a good chance they aren’t.

Nexgard, Nexgard Spectra, Braveto Chews/Topspots and Revolution Plus are all great products that we recommend.

☆☆ Shared from The Cat Nurse ☆☆

The Easter holidays give us time to spend with family and friends 🥰🥰

However, some of the things we enjoy over Easter can be dangerous to cats. These include:

🌺Lily's - these commonly gifted flowers are particularly toxic to cats, as they cause kidney failure. The whole plant is toxic, but cats are particularly prone to getting the yellow or orange pollen on their coat and then licking it off. Veterinary attention should be sought immediately if you think your cat has been exposed to lillies.

🍪Raisins and saltanas - these are found in cakes, biscuits and pastries, but around Easter time they are most commonly found in hot cross buns. It's possible for cats to eat only a few and still become ill, as there's no corrolation between the amount eaten and how sick the cat gets. Raisins and saltanas cause gastrointestinal upset and kidney failure, so veterinary attention should be sought immediately for cats who have accidentally ingested them.

🍫Chocolate - cats are less likely to eat chocolate compared to dogs, but chocolate contains ingredients theobromine (and caffeine) which can cause serious illness. Cats are more likely to eat chocolate cakes or pastries, but these usually contain cocoa powder which has very high levels of theobromine. Chocolate toxicity can cause signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, increased thirst, mouth breathing and seizures. Veterinary attention should be sought as soon as possible if you think your cat has eaten chocolate.

🐥Easter decorations - it can be fun to make Easter baskets and decorations but some of these are made of materials that can be chewed and swallowed by cats, causing choking or intestinal obstruction. Hazardous items include ribbons, fluffy Easter chicks and plastic grass. These should be kept away from all cats, but especially away from kittens who are more likely to play with them.

⚠️Don't forget to keep cats away from lilies this Valentines day

🌺Lilies are incredibly toxic to cats as the are 'nephrotoxic', meaning they are toxic to the kidneys, causing renal tubular necrosis i.e. kidney damage and failure

🌺ALL PARTS OF THE LILY ARE POISONOUS TO CATS, including the pollen, which cats can easily get on their coat and then lick off

🐈Cats that have ingested lilies can be successfully treated, but only if they are treated early

Common signs of lily toxicity include:
😿Yellow or orange pollen staining on the coat (especially the face and paws)
😿Vomiting
😿Lethargy
😿Anorexia (not eating)
😿Dehydration (skin tenting, sunken eyes, dry gums, reduced urine output )
😿Painful, swollen kidneys (may resent handling)

Less common signs:
😿Ataxia (wobbly when walking)
😿Seizures
😿Head pressing
😿Swollen paws/face

⚠️If you suspect your cat had ingested ANY part of a lily plant you must seek veterinary attention immediately

🐈Cats suffering from lily poisoning will likely need to be hospitalised for decontamination, intravenous fluid therapy, anti-sickness medication, nutritional support and intensive nursing care. They will also require blood tests to assess kidney function

⚠️Because lilies are so toxic to cats it is highly advisable that they are not kept in the household with cats, even if the lilies are a gift. Lilies should be removed from and flower bouquets or given to someone who does not have any cats in the household

You stole our hearts darling Toffee ❤️

This adorable 6 month old Cavoodle had persistent deciduous teeth, including canines, which were causing her adult teeth to grow in the wrong position!

Thankfully was picked up early by her regular vet
and they were extracted yesterday.

Dr Aaron is now hopeful that with ball therapy the adult teeth will return to the correct position.

😷 LOCKDOWN UPDATE 😷

Dear lovely clients!

As we all know we are going into lockdown for the next 3 day but we are still OPEN!

As of 5pm today we will be taking some extra precautions:

• The front door is going to be locked so we can monitor how many people are in the clinic at one time. Please call the clinic on arrival.

• As of 5pm, everyone must wear a face mask into the clinic.

• Only 1 person allowed in the consult room - unless special circumstances apply (euthanisa etc)

We understand that this can be frustrating but please understand we are trying our best to accommodate everyone in a safe manner so we are able to stay open and provide the best healthcare to your pets!

Thank you from all the staff at the Aspley Veterinary Practice 🐶🐱

🦠 COVID-19 🦠

To all our valued clients,

We understand there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment in regards to COVID-19. We would like to assure you that we are still open to provide the best care for your pets.

We do ask that anyone entering and leaving the clinic to please use the hand sanitiser that is provided in the front reception. If sanitiser is not available, please ask us and we will show you to a sink for handwashing. If you do wish to wash your hands at any time before, during or after your visit, there is a sink in our consulting room with soap provided.

We want to do our absolute best to protect our staff so that the practice can remain open and functioning as normal so we can care for your pets. We also want to protect other people that will be coming in and out of the clinic. We have continued our rigorous in-clinic hygiene and cleaning protocols with extra care to help ensure this safety.

If you have an upcoming appointment or have recently been to our clinic AND may have been exposed to COVID-19, please call us immediately so we can make appropriate arrangements to see your pet. We have a plan of action in place and want to be able to care for your pets without risking the spread of the contagious Coranavirus disease.

If you have any questions please call the clinic on 3263 3166

Thank you for your understanding.

Don't forget about them because they're so stoic!

Often owners can miss the signs of arthritis in their aging cats due to the fact that cats are so good at hiding any signs of pain until it gets too much. If you're concerned that your kitty may be getting sore in their old age please give us a call at the clinic to have a chat and make an appointment with one of our vets. There are lots of things that can be changed/included (medically and environmentally) into their daily life to help your ageing kitty feel comfortable for many years to come.

Did you know that most senior or super senior (geriatric) cats suffer from osteoarthritis aka degenerative joint disease? 🤔
A 2002 study by Hardie, Roe & Martin showed that 90% of cats over the age of 12 were showing radiographic evidence of DJD 😿
Cats are experts at hiding pain and signs of chronic joint pain may not be obvious 🐱
Cat owners should look out for behavioural changes that may indicate their cat is uncomfortable or in pain 👀
These include:
🐈Stiff or unsteady gait
🐈Stiffness when rising from sleep
🐈Reduced ability to jump up or down from furniture or when outside
🐈Reluctance to use the stairs
🐈Reluctance to play, or less play activity than usual
🐈Sleeping for longer periods or restlessness (cannot settle)
🐈Favouring beds that are lower to the ground
🐈Difficulty grooming and poor or matted coat
🐈Avoiding interaction with humans/hiding
🐈Aggression towards humans - resents being touched or picked up (may growl, hiss or lash out)
🐈Aggression or changes in behaviour towards other animals in the household
🐈House soiling - episodes of missing the litter tray or soiling in unusual locations

If you suspect that your cat is showing any of the above signs then veterinary attention should be sought👍
Although osteoarthritis is a progressive condition, it CAN be managed! 😺
Cats with osteoarthritis can be prescribed pain relief mediations such as anti-inflammatories (and other types of medication if needed) by the vet to keep them comfortable
This can have a really positive effect on their quality of life! 😺
Although there is little evidence available, some cats with arthritis may benefit from supplements or food containing omega 3 EFA's (essential fatty acids). These should always be given under the recommendation of a veterinary professional 👍
It's also important to try to make your home as 'senior cat friendly' as possible if you have an older cat. This is so that your cat has easy access to all of its essential recourses. I will be covering this in a later post 💚
Veterinary nurses: If you go to www.catcare4life.org you can sign up to the International Cat Care CatCareforLife programme, which gives you access to lots of useful resources and downloads, including mobility, behavior and environmental checklists👍
Cat owners: Go to www.catcare4life.org where you can access lots of useful health checklist to fill in and take to your vet. You can print and fill in different checklists depending on your cat's age. Senior and Super Senior checklists are available! ✍

Gorgeous Haroun is looking for a lovely family to call his own. We can personally tell you this boy is the sweetest little snuggler. ❤ Please contact the rescue group if you would like to enquire about meeting him.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

HAROUN ❤❤❤

Age - 5 months old
Gender - Male
Breed - Domestic Short Hair
Cat friendly - Yes very!
Dog friendly - Yes
Child friendly - Untested but would be fine
Location - Deception Bay 4508
Adoption fee - $180
Medical notes - Haroun has three legs. One of his back legs was amputated due to severe joint damage from chronic infection when he was a baby kitten. Haroun will need to be kept at a lean body weight to help his remaining three legs as he gets older.
Adoption requirements -
• Indoor only home unless he has access to a safe and secure outdoor enclosure.
• His new home MUST have another cat or kitten.
• Preference will be given to a home who is able to adopt Haroun and his sister Sesame together.

Haroun joined our rescue with his mum and 4 siblings after they were saved from death row in a very isolated north qld pound. He was a tiny 6 week old kitten and had a nasty virus that caused ulcers in this mouth, and a fungal infection called ringworm on his skin. He was treated for both of these and was doing really well, until one of his knee joints swelled up and became infected. After lots of check ups, our vets had no idea what had caused the infection in poor Haroun. He went through 6 weeks of antibiotics which eventually cleared up the infection. Sadly the infection at such a young age had caused severe damage to his knee, and early onset of arthritis. Poor Haroun limped around on his little leg and it became muscle wasted and skinnier by the week. After discussions with our vets, we decided to have his leg amputated to relieve Haroun of the pain and discomfort.

Only days after surgery Haroun was already racing around Handi HQ with his sisters. He was jumping up to snuggle with us on the couch, and tucked himself into bed with us at night. It has been a month since his surgery and Haroun is finally ready to find his perfect forever home.

Haroun is a total smoocher! He adores his humans, and loves snuggling up to them at night to go to sleep. He's that kitten who is always there investigating what you are doing and making sure he approves. Haroun adores the other cats in his foster home and because of this, he will not be available to an only cat home. Haroun seeks love from the older cats, and uses his sisters for wrestle practice. Ultimately his perfect forever home would be able to include both him, and his sister Sesame into their home - although we know this may not be achievable.
