Back to school 📚
The vanschooling class of 2025 has now commenced! Ava year 4 and Connor year 2… we have already had to call in Principal Dad to pull order back in the classroom

Today’s class consisted of 45 minutes of a combined maths, english and handwriting lesson followed by 4 hours of waterfall exploring, snail enclosure making and quality family time, not a bad way to start 2025!

We love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
We love her far horizons,
We love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror..
The wide brown land for me!

Help please 🙏 🙏🙏
We keep hearing that we need to book WA coastlines just to get a spot in places like Shark Bay, Monkey Mia, Ningaloo etc at least 4-6 months in advance…. 😱🤯🫣

So we are doing the bottom of Australia for the next half of our lap of Oz. We are planning to hit WA from May to August- September which gives us 4-5 months to get upto Exmouth. Can we please get some advise on the MUST DO locations but also the BEST camp spots at those sites for example the ‘Ningaloo camp site 17’ and how long you would stay at each site?
If anyone has an itinerary of this that would be awesome 🤩

Any advice from anyone who has done it already would be appreciated, we want to get the most out of it as this will be our only opportunity to do so.
Thanks in advance
Bek & Doug 🤠🛻🏕️

📍 Coober Pedy, Central South Australia
Known as the Opal Capital of the world, Coober Pedy was such a unique town to visit as we had never seen an underground town before. When people talk about Opal fever we now understand why they made a tv series about it.

🏕️ we stayed 3 nights at BIG4 Stuart Range Outback Resort. It was great, big sites, nice pool and the best pizza we have ever had. Fill up your tanks before arriving as water is limited in the town and cost us $1 per 40litres.

Here is our favourite things to do while here. Give yourself at least 3 nights to experience everything the underground town has to offer.

1. Noodling - there is a public noodling area with mounds from the mining sites. It is free and you can hire a black light, shovel and headlight for $20 each and there is so much Opal to find.
2. Old Timers Mine was our favourite mine, it’s $40 per family and goes deep into the mines plus a museum & Opal shop.
3. Other mines & museums include
- Desert Cave museum/ bar cafe
- Umoona Opal Mine & Museum
- Opal Cave Underground
- Faye’s underground home
4. Check out the Catacomb & St Peter/Paul Catholic Churches
5. Big Winch 360 is a must do for lunch or dinner, looks over the whole of Coober Pedy and is beautiful at sunset
6. Visit the two Coober Pedy entrance and hill signs

✨Bucket list experience- Cycling around Uluru!
If you’re planning a trip to the Red Centre, save this for everything you need to know when bike riding around the rock.

🛂 you need a permit to enter the national park, it’s $38 per adult, kids are free.
🚴The full loop is 10.6km from the carpark or 15km from the Cultural Centre and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours at a cruisey pace.
🕣 Early morning is the best time to ride, we left at 8.30am.
🚲 You can hire a bike from or we brought ours from Kmart.
💦🥪Pack some snack, water and spare tyre tubes as the paths can get rocky.

This was truly an unforgettable experience for our family, the close-up view of the sacred rock and its stunning surroundings were just something everyone needs to experience in their lifetime 🚴‍♂️🌄

📍Field of Light, Uluru NT
This absolutely blew our minds! 🤯 50,000 spindles of light, covering more than seven football fields or 49,000m2. This is the largest installation that artist Bruce Munro has ever created. Carrying the name Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku (which means looking at lots of beautiful lights), that bring life and colour to the desert.
What started out as a temporary exhibition has been extended indefinitely.

Ticket includes a bus ride to and from the location, Takes around 30 minutes to walk through
$48per adult
$35 per child
$166 family of 4

Is an absolute must do when visiting the Red Centre NT.

📍Uluru Sunset lookout, NT
This was an unreal spot to check out the rock, just down the road from the Aryes Rock Campground. Head down 1 hour before sunset to get a good spot, pack some drinks and nibbles and enjoy the view.
We were pleasantly surprised when our mat colours tied in perfectly with our family portrait photo with Uluru 🤩🧡

So proud of our ‘Shelby’ Fuso Truck! She got us to the red centre and has done over 15,000km around Australia with only a scratch 🛻💪

If your an early riser check out Talinguṟu Nyakunytjaku - Uluṟu Sunrise Viewing Area

Question 🙋‍♀️ Travelling families, is anyone happy to share with us their costs to travel fulltime? We are finding it very hard to stick to our budget 🫣 any tips? Are our costs similar or crazy compared to other families travelling fulltime as we are averaging $1,800 per week.

SEPTEMBER EXPENSES
Weekly Budget: $1,400p/w
September total: $9,667
September p/week: $2,416
Over budget: $1,016 (cost of new inverter/ battery)

This has been our most expensive month on the road so far, exploring Broome, Dampier Peninsula and southern Kimberley.
Fuel and groceries were very expensive plus we had some unexpected medical, vet and truck/ van maintenance expenses which added up to an expensive month. This month also includes an additional food shop to get us through the southern Kimberley into the NT.

Groceries: $2057- more expensive in rural areas/ Broome + additional shop
Restaurants / Takeaway: $805- again more expensive in rural areas & Broome
Bills: $283- starlink and phones
Schooling: $143 - kids online EUKA program
Insurances: $438- truck, van and roadside
Subscriptions: $53 - Netflix, Spotify, Disney
Fuel: $2026 average cost was $2.95 p/l, we clocked up a lot of kms in rural areas.
Accommodation: $1120- peak season average sites $40-80p/n & we still free camped a lot
Alcohol: $201- down on previous month
Caravan/ Vehicle Expenses: $759 - unexpected repairs
Miscellaneous: $767- new truck inverter/ battery , Kmart stuff
Recreation / Entertainment: $245 - pedicures, cable beach camel rides
Vet / medical- $800- unexpected medical and vet expenses. Carlo got a bad ear infection

For those who are interested, below is a write up by Yahoo News who contacted us about the real costs of living fulltime on the road. We are pretty honest about it all, discussing the cost of our set up, how we afford to travel, monthly expenses and how we try to save. Would love to hear how others travel, save and spend while travelling this amazing country with so much to see and do.

📍East MacDonnell Ranges, Red Centre NT
They stretch 150km east of Alice Springs and hide some of Central Australia’s most beautiful outback landscapes including gaps, gorges, bush walks, mining settlements and Aboriginal art.

🏕️ We stayed at Discovery Parks Alice Springs, decided to do a day trip through the East Mac’s. Was a big day, if you don’t have a dog then definitely stay at the camps out in the Mac’s instead.

🤩Itinerary Highlights
1. Emily / Jesse Gap
2. Trephina Gorge - aboriginal rock art
3. N’Dhals Gorge
4. John Hayes Rockpool
5. Ghost Gum- biggest & oldest in Oz
6. Arltunga Hotel / Historical Reserve from the gold rush in 1887- self guided tour through the mining settlement
