It was a mammoth weekend of sniffing for our Sniff Clubbers last weekend!

Saturday was the ACSW Interiors Element Specialty Trial hosted by .

Sunday was the ACSW Odour Recognition Test hosted by .

Some successes came in the form of a shiny rosette, while others came in the form of overcoming nerves, keeping it fun and gaining experience.

We have the joy of sharing some of these teams with other training schools, and it was great to see collaboration on display as everyone cheered for everyone else’s success!

Steph & Lisa also had the honour of judging the ORT, and loved seeing so many dogs approaching the start line with enthusiasm and joy!

Hopefully everyone is enjoying a rest, cos next weekend we have the NW2!

SNIFF CLUB headed over the border last weekend to participate in K9 Nose Time’s NW3 trial.

It was an awesome day for our “Paw’d of Directors” Winnie & Bosley, who both titled AND placed overall 1st and 3rd respectively!

Hosting a trial is no easy feat and we are so grateful to the organisers, officials and volunteers for making it happen, and allowing us the opportunity to trial!

You may find the K9 Nosework®️ approach to be a little different from other training you have done before.

Traditionally, the human is the one leading the way and making the decisions, even when working as a team with their dog. However, in nose work the one with the highly skilled nose is the one who leads the way! Us humans are there to interpret what that nose is telling us, and to ensure the safety of the dog.

Generally speaking, we dictate how our dogs live their lives. We decide when and where they eat, walk, play, sleep, toilet and more. In Nosework, we allow our dogs to work with autonomy and make choices.

In doing this, we also get the privilege of better understanding how our dogs experience the world, and we open up a communication pathway that allows us and our dog to better understand each other.

How cool is that?!

Getting our Sniff on 👃

One of the many things I love doing with Lola is Nosework. I’ve been hiding treats around the house for her since she was 7 months old, which moved into beginners Nosework and we’ve just finished our Intro to Birch Odour course!

There are many reasons I love doing nosework with Lola, some include:
~ strengthens your relationship
~ builds confidence
~ mentally stimulating
~ learn how to read your dogs body language
~ gives your dog a task to work on
~ problem solving
~ having fun together

There are so many benefits but those are just a few

PRIORITISING JOY

Like any skill, there are 101+ ways to teach your dog to find something of our choice and tell us where it is.

And sure, most dogs will be content enough to work for the reward at the end. But we want nose work to be more than that for both you and your dog - we want it to be JOYFUL.

We want spending time with your dog to be JOYFUL.
We want training to be JOYFUL.
We want doing your homework to be JOYFUL.
We want trialling to be JOYFUL.

Because if there is a fun way to do something, why would we do it the less-than-fun way?

Additionally, as trial judges, we can vouch for the fact that the teams who approach the start line at a competition with an “oh this is gonna be so much fun!” attitude tend to perform better!

So, win-win right?

Obedience dog by day, nosework queen by night 👑

The past 9 months have been all about obedience with Cinder, and while she absolutely lives for heelwork, l’ve discovered that she gets just as excited for using her nose and sniffing things out 👃

If you’ve met Cinder, you’ll know that she’s a handler focused girly that lives to please me. She’s a fun little dog that’s always eager to work so finding another sport that she’s crazy for that promotes independence has been a game changer for us.

Instead of listening to my cues, she gets to let loose and lead the way, guiding me to the source of the odour which has been so rewarding to see 🥹

The next few months will be busy for us as we gear up to hopefully trial before the end of the year but l’m super excited to start our private lessons with to see how far we can push it and where this sport will take us 🙌🏻

Izzy started nosework classes after her elbow surgery about two years ago as I was looking for low impact and enriching activities for her. The first class, she was scared to enter the room and startled by every new item. But with each session her confidence grew, leading to massive FOMO when she has to wait her turn in the car
Now she confidently solves problems and works independently, even in new environments. Izzy absolutely loves nosework and (I might be biased) she really is a super sniffer!!! We are looking forward to where this journey continues to take us
