As a practicing Veterinarian, I have clients continuously approaching me with one common question: "what is the best diet for my pet?"
Eating properly is an important part of health, however, the necessity of proper diet is commonly dismissed in veterinary practice. The type of diet plan that veterinarians suggest tends to be influenced by the commercial pet food industry. However, pet food sold on the market has many undesirable additives and processing methods. Due to this, there has been an increase in the number of pet owners who are developing home-made meals for their pets to avoid the additives and preservatives found in most commercial food. Raw feeding has also gained popularity amongst pet owners.
Home prepared diets have been extremely useful in some health conditions, particularly in managing adverse food reactions, and at times is the only option for animals with multiple medical conditions. Unfortunately, a home-made diet that is under-researched or produced without the necessary education received in a Veterinary degree can be very dangerous (this is another reason Veterinarians recommend commercial food – to prevent pet owners making their own pet food that lacks a vital nutrient/mineral or exceeds the required amount).
This page will provide clinically valid nutritional advice based on my extensive knowledge as a Veterinarian. I have spent five years working exclusively as a small animal nutritionist in the commercial pet food industry, prior to this I attained a Masters in Animal Nutrition. Furthermore, I have spent 15 years working as a practicing vet in small animal medicine and surgery. I also have a diploma in Chinese Medicine which I use when working in the field of alternative medicine for pets.
