New rental legislation passed by the Queensland Government’s in 2021 comes into effect tomorrow Saturday 1 October, making it much easier for renters to have a pet. It's good news for many people, given Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership numbers in the world with 62 per cent of us having a pet, (40 per cent a dog vs 30 per cent a cat). Now, a renter can seek the property owner’s permission to keep a pet, and property owners can only refuse a request on identified reasonable grounds, such as keeping the pet would breach laws or by-laws. The property owner must respond to a request for a pet in writing within 14 days, or consent is implied.
