Brrr 🥶

You’re not gonna leave your baby at home today to freeze their t***s off are you?

Nah, you wouldn’t do that…bring them in to have some warm and snuggly fun with some of their best pals and favourite teachers.

Not to mention…you don’t have to get out and take them for a walk and freeze your t***s off! 😉

See you soon!

Bit gusty today, no? 🍃

Remember each doggo is different when it comes to blowy weather.

Strong gusts of wind and pressure drops can agitate certain dogs, as such it’s important to look at any changes in behaviour you are seeing with a keen eye.

Your dog might show signs of anxiety or restlessness, or might be unable to sit still when they are met with strong wind levels. Some can shut down, and want to sit on walks or go slow. This could be for a variety of reasons like the physical feeling on their coats, or the noise of the wind – perhaps that sounds prevents your dog from hearing anything else. The list of possibilities is endless.

With any environment change, it’s important to take extra care when evaluating whether or not it’s effecting your pups experience.

Of course, for a lot of dogs the wind is no big deal. For instance Milo and Edith here had a great time on their breezy walk this morning.

Windy weather is far in few between in Brisbane thankfully. But it’s always an important reminder to be thinking about environmental changes and not only how it may affect convenience and plans, but more importantly, the way our dogs feel. Whether they are experiencing wind from inside or out in a the elements, it could be changing your dogs comfort levels.

🌬️ Just a friendly reminder from our family to yours! 😊

9 reasons regular socialisation is important for dogs, and why daycare is a great fit for so many dogs:

1. **Mental Stimulation**: Interaction with other dogs provides essential mental exercise, preventing boredom and the development of destructive behaviours.

2. **Physical Exercise**: Social play with other dogs ensures they get plenty of physical activity, which helps maintain a healthy weight and overall physical health.

3. **Confidence Building**: Regular positive interactions with other dogs can boost a dog's confidence, especially if they are naturally shy or anxious.

4. **Communication Skills**: Dogs learn to communicate more effectively through body language and vocalisations, improving their ability to interact appropriately with both dogs and humans.

5. **Preventing Aggression**: Early and regular socialisation can prevent the development of fear-based aggression, as dogs learn that other dogs are friends, not threats.

6. **Emotional Health**: Social dogs that interact regularly with their peers tend to be happier and more emotionally balanced, reducing the likelihood of stress-related behaviours.

7. **Social Etiquette**: Dogs learn important social cues and behaviours, such as appropriate play styles, mouthing inhibition, and when to give space, fostering harmonious interactions.

8. **Varied Experiences**: Exposure to different breeds, sizes, and temperaments in a controlled environment can make dogs more adaptable and less reactive in various situations. Thats why we make such a big deal of our theme weeks, there is there is meaning behind the madness 😉

9. **Parent Peace of Mind**: Knowing your dog is well-socialised and enjoys the company of other dogs provides parents with confidence and peace of mind, reducing anxiety about leaving their dog in places with other dogs when it’s needed. For instance at the vet, kennel or grooming.

Social dogs get a lot more than play from their furry friends 💚

Familiar?

We have plenty of families in our team who have dogs with severe separation anxiety, and know well that we aren’t alone!

That’s why we are developing a regular program called Paws & Relax ‘After School Care’. Once a month we will be offering a late night daycare option on a Friday night 6:45pm-10pm.

Our goal is to offer Pawrents one night they can have for themselves without having to worry about who’s looking after the doggos.

We will also be offering extra dates in December for that busy time of the year.

This will be offered as an ‘add on’ service for daycare dogs only.

Calendar of dates coming next week - Stay tuned 📆

When temperatures get cooler, you might think it's time to adjust your dog’s grooming routine. People often let their dog’s hair grow longer during cooler periods and trim it when it gets warmer, believing it helps maintain a comfortable temperature. However, there are a few things to consider before making changes! 💡

Your dog’s coat is naturally adapted to handle various weather conditions. In cooler weather, your dog may develop a thicker coat, which then sheds as it warms up, helping to keep them cool.

Some grooming and bathing tips for cooler weather:

- While your dog’s coat provides insulation, it can still get wet, which might make them uncomfortable. Ensure their coat is thoroughly dried during the cooler parts of the day.

- You don’t have to let your dog’s fur grow longer if shorter fur is more manageable. It's more important to keep them clean and mat free.

- If your dog has short hair or you prefer to keep it short, that's fine! They live indoors where it’s warm, and if it gets a bit cooler, you can always get them a light jacket for extra warmth.

- Protect your dog’s feet from the elements. Rain, mud, and debris can cause discomfort, so be sure to clean their paws after walks and outdoor time.

It’s crucial to keep your dog clean throughout the year. Regular grooming helps prevent skin infections, matting, and the buildup of dirt and debris, which can lead to discomfort or health issues. Cleanliness also reduces the likelihood of parasites like fleas and ticks taking hold.

A well-groomed dog is not only healthier but also happier and more comfortable in any weather.

Thankfully we currently have a full roster of groomers with plenty of availability for baths and grooms at the moment. Need something soon?

Straight from the grooming room!

Regularly brushing your dog offers numerous benefits, such as:
- Eliminating debris, allergens, and dirt from their fur.
- Evenly distributing natural oils throughout their coat.
- Removing loose fur to minimize shedding.
- Preventing tangles, mats, and dreadlocks.

Here are some helpful tips for effective dog brushing:
- Start with the top priority zones, don't just brush where it's easy and call it a day.
- Start at the base of the hair and brush through to the tips, ensuring thorough coverage.
- Brush in a downward and outward motion, away from the skin.
- Follow the direction of their coat growth.
- Be gentle and avoid excessive pulling.
- Limit the number of brush strokes in one area, especially with tools like the Furminator, to avoid overworking the skin.
- Take your time when tackling tangles or mats.
- Use a mat spray or conditioner to ease combing through stubborn tangles.
- If necessary, trim small mats with scissors, ensuring you don't harm your pet.
- Start brushing your dog from a young age, incorporating treats to make it a positive experience. Begin with short sessions and gradually increase duration as your dog becomes accustomed to the routine.

Brushing is an important part of what should be a scheduled and regular routine, and not up to your groomer to handle on the grooming table.

If you need help with brushing techniques, don't be shy to come and say hello, we'd love to share what we know

While we are the first one's to admit each doggy daycare has it's own strengths, we want to show off ours!

Many doggy daycares plan their days grouping in size, we believe here at Paws & Relax, to create the safest, most fun, and most rewarding day you should be looking at so much more.

Like us hoomans, each dog has different needs, and there is no one size (or breed) fits all solution. We pride ourselves on getting to know your dogs the best we can and using that knowledge to give all our daycare students a safe and happy places to spend their day.

If you are looking at starting doggy daycare ask the question: How do you group your dogs?
