Beachside Veterinary Hospital

Beachside Veterinary Hospital After graduating with honours from the University of Sydney in 1994 Cate moved to Northern Victoria to work in a mixed dairy practice.

She worked there for the next 3 years developing her skills in both small and large animal medicine and surgery. It was here she met her husband. At the beginning of 1998 they moved to the United Kingdom where Cate worked as a locum in a variety of small and mixed practices for almost 2 years gaining broad experience and exposure to varying techniques. On her return to Australia she was invited to

become a partner in the Northern Victorian practice where she had worked as a new graduate. At that time a branch practice was purchased which became Cate’s “baby” and with the assistance of dedicated staff it grew into a strong performing practice in its own right. Throughout the past 17 years Cate has done all the required continuing education plus extra study in both small animal surgery and ultrasonography. In 2011 she completed a 4 year Masters degree in small animal practice through Murdoch University in Perth. During this period she and her husband have been raising 3 beautiful daughters and their family dog “Kevin the Kelpie”. In 2015 following the devastating ANZAC Day earthquake Cate volunteered to travel to Nepal to be one of only three experienced cattle vets to be in the country to provide veterinary support for the sacred animals which represent the backbone of Nepalese society. It was the most professionally rewarding experience of her career and she hopes to be able to do more volunteering in the future. Cate moved north in 2016 to avoid the cold weather of Victoria and after six months working in a local clinic she recognises she has something different to offer, taking advantage of her broad experience, her commitment to professionalism and the latest techniques. After starting Beachside in January 2017, the business has grown from a mobile service to a small clinic in Yorkeys K**b, and since July 2023 the fully equiped hospital facility in Smithfield from which we operate today

Cate projects a bright and cheery manner and has a strong passion for animal care and support for clients. She and her highly dedicated team will always strive for the best outcome for both owner and pet.

⚠️ IS YOUR DOG PROTECTED AGAINST LEPTOSPIROSIS? ⚠️

❓ What is Leptospirosis?
Rodents 🐀, wildlife 🦘, and livestock 🐮 can all carry the leptospirosis bacteria. 🦠However, dogs do not have to make direct contact with these animals to be infected. Direct or indirect contact with infected urine, especially in soil and standing water (puddles, mud, etc) can spread the disease. This includes drinking, swimming 🏊, or wading in infected water.
The bacteria causing leptospirosis in dogs can survive for months in soil and water, if conditions are favourable. Generally, periods of extended rain 🌧 produce environments that are conducive to the spread of leptospirosis in dogs.
Leptospirosis can infect humans 🧍‍🧍‍♀️, too. Care must be taken to reduce exposure to rats or to the urine from a dog infected with Leptospirosis.

❓What are the symptoms?
Some infected individuals may exhibit only very mild symptoms, while others can undergo multi-organ failure, causing life-threatening conditions.
Some symptoms include:
🌡 Fever
😴 Lethargy and reluctance to move
🍴 Loss of appetite
🫗 Excess drinking and urination
🤮 Vomiting
💩 Diarrhoea
💛 Jaundice (yellowing of eyes and gums, among other things)
😮‍💨Respiratory difficulty.

❓ What can you do to reduce the risk of Leptospirosis?
Vaccination is always the best prevention 💉
As well as ensuring your dogs water bowls are kept fresh and clean 💦 and keeping your dogs away from stagnant water such as puddles, drains and swampy areas!

To book your dog in for their Lepto vaccination, call the team here at Beachside Veterinary Hospital on 07 4057 8677!

🐾Meet Maggie "Magoo"🐾

Dr. Cate recently performed 2 surgical procedures on her Kelpie Maggie.

After multiple urinary tract infections, Dr. Cate diagnosed Maggie with a hooded v***a. To eliminate the risk of recurring UTI's, Dr. Cate performed surgery on her perineal area, removing the excess skin and eliminating the cave in which her v***a lived. We'll spare you the photos, but she has recovered well from this surgery and no further UTIs to date.

Maggie has also had recurring issues with discharge from her eyes due to, you guessed it, too much skin around her eyes. Dr. Cate has performed what is called "Bilateral (meaning both) Entropian" surgery, where a small amount of the excess skin was surgically removed from under her eyes. Maggie will greatly benefit from this surgery in the long run, and greatly reduce the risk of eye discharge and infections.

The first photo is a snapshot of Maggie straight after her surgery, while the last photo shows her beautiful profile, all healed up. While in recovery, our Practice Manager's pup, Kublai, is seen here waiting patiently for his friend to be well enough to play again. Can you tell he missed her terribly?

In 2011 she completed a 4 year Masters degree in small animal practice through Murdoch University in Peth. Cate and her family have taken the lifestyle decision to move north to avoid the cold weather of Victoria and after six months working in a local clinic she recognises she has something different to offer taking advantage of her broad experience, her commitment to professionalism and the latest techniques. Cate projects a bright and cheery manner and has a strong passion for animal care and support for clients. She will always strive for the best outcome for both owner and pet. Having a fully equipped clinic to back up the mobile service, Beachside Veterinary Services offers all the benefits of a standard clinic (surgery, hospitalisation, radiology, laboratory services etc) without the inconvenience and stress of necessarily having to transport your pet to the clinic for routine examinations.
