Beachside Veterinary Hospital

Beachside Veterinary Hospital After graduating with honours from the University of Sydney in 1994 Cate moved to Northern Victoria to work in a mixed dairy practice.
(21)

She worked there for the next 3 years developing her skills in both small and large animal medicine and surgery. It was here she met her husband. At the beginning of 1998 they moved to the United Kingdom where Cate worked as a locum in a variety of small and mixed practices for almost 2 years gaining broad experience and exposure to varying techniques. On her return to Australia she was invited to

become a partner in the Northern Victorian practice where she had worked as a new graduate. At that time a branch practice was purchased which became Cate’s “baby” and with the assistance of dedicated staff it grew into a strong performing practice in its own right. Throughout the past 17 years Cate has done all the required continuing education plus extra study in both small animal surgery and ultrasonography. In 2011 she completed a 4 year Masters degree in small animal practice through Murdoch University in Peth. During this period she and her husband have been raising 3 beautiful daughters and their family dog “Kevin the Kelpie”. In 2015 following the devastating ANZAC Day earthquake Cate volunteered to travel to Nepal to be one of only three experienced cattle vets to be in the country to provide veterinary support for the sacred animals which represent the backbone of Nepalese society. It was the most professionally rewarding experience of her career and she hopes to be able to do more volunteering in the future. Cate and her family have taken the lifestyle decision to move north to avoid the cold weather of Victoria and after six months working in a local clinic she recognises she has something different to offer taking advantage of her broad experience, her commitment to professionalism and the latest techniques. Cate projects a bright and cheery manner and has a strong passion for animal care and support for clients. She will always strive for the best outcome for both owner and pet. Having a fully equipped clinic to back up the mobile service, Beachside Veterinary Services offers all the benefits of a standard clinic (surgery, hospitalisation, radiology, laboratory services etc) without the inconvenience and stress of necessarily having to transport your pet to the clinic for routine examinations.

Little Indiana is a 1.5 year old Silky Terrier X who loves to chew on goat horns and deer antlers. Indi has come to the clinic for a free dental check after a weekend of lip smacking, bad breath & not wanting to eat his crunchy biscuits.

Every dog has 4 teeth between their 1st molars and canine fangs- these teeth are called pre-molars (see tooth chart).

The first photo of Indi's teeth show 3 of his normal & healthy premolars, typical for a pup his age.
The second photo shows that his 2nd pre-molar tooth (circled in yellow) looks as if it's been split into two tiny teeth! This tooth appears to have incurred some trauma, cracking the tooth's crown off and exposing the root.

Many dog owner's believe giving their pup a bone or horn to chew is helpful in keeping teeth clean. This is absolutely the case, however, if chewing is excessive, cracked teeth can occur.

Here at Beachside Vets, we recommend daily teeth brushing to assist in keeping your pup's tartar & gingivitis to a minimum. Special dental biscuits & carrots are also a safe & yummy alternative!

Watch this space for an update on Indiana's dental procedure, and call our clinic to book a FREE DENTAL CHECK for your pet!

Hey everyone! 🐾 As pet owners, we all want our furry friends to have the best possible health. And that includes their teeth! 🦷

Here are some tips on when you should take your pet to the vet for their teeth...

First of all, if you notice your pet having bad breath, it could be a sign of dental issues. 🤢 Just like us, our pets can develop plaque and tartar build-up, leading to bad breath. So if your cuddle buddy's kisses are not as sweet as they used to be, it's time for a checkup at the vet.

Another sign to look out for is if your pet is having difficulty eating or chewing their food. 🍗 This could indicate a toothache or other dental problem. Our pets may not be able to tell us when something is wrong, so it's up to us to pay attention to any changes in their eating habits.

And let's not forget about those pearly whites! 🦷 If you notice any discoloration, broken or loose teeth, or swollen gums, it's definitely time to schedule a visit to the vet.

Give us a call today on 4057 8677 and book in a FREE dental check for your fur family!

DENTAL FUN FACTS!!

1. SNAILS HAVE THE MOST TEETH OF ANY ANIMAL!
Snails teeth are not like regular teeth. A snail’s teeth are arranged in rows on its tongue. A garden snail has about 14,000 teeth while other species can have over 20,000. But that’s not even the most shocking part: The teeth of an aquatic snail called the limpet are the strongest known biological material on Earth, even stronger than titanium!

2. YOU CAN TELL A DOLPHINS AGE BY ITS TEETH!
Just like trees, dolphin’s teeth have rings inside them that tell how old they are. Their teeth are permanent, but they don’t use them for chewing—dolphins swallow their food whole because they have no muscle in their jaws!

3. GIRAFFES HAVE NO UPPER FRONT TEETH!
Just like humans, giraffes have 32 teeth, but most of them are positioned in the back of their mouths. They use their lips and 20-foot long tongues to grab leaves and twigs and grind them up with their back teeth.

4. HORSES CAN HAVE RECEDING GUMS JUST LIKE HUMANS!
In fact, that’s where the popular saying “long in the tooth,” meaning old, comes from. As horses age, their gums recede and expose more of their teeth, making it look like they’re actually growing.

SOME FACTS A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME FOR US......

1. As many as 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of periodontal disease by the time they’re just two years old

2. Dental disease is more common in small dog breeds, like Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Dachshunds, and brachycephalic (short-faced) breeds, such as Boxers, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus. This is generally thought to be due to overcrowding of teeth and sometimes abnormal position of teeth in smaller/shorter jaws.

3. Besides periodontal disease causing painful issues in your pet’s oral cavity, it can also cause damage to the heart, liver, and kidneys!

Did you know that your pets don't have to live with joint discomfort? 🦴😖

As your pets grow older, there is an increased chance of joint concerns arising. You may notice that they struggle getting up, jumping or climbing stairs, appear stiff in their movements, avoid exercise and playtime, or even act out when touched or picked up.
The good news is, supplements can make a huge improvement to their overall mobility and comfort. And, if you haven't noticed any of these symptoms, they can also be used as a preventative.
That's why we'd love to tell you more about 4CYTE™, a scientifically proven once-daily joint treatment.

How can 4CYTE™ help?

🐾 4CYTE™ addresses stiffness plus lack of willingness to jump, run or play.

🐾 It reduces pain and inflammation rather than just addressing the symptoms, by targeting the underlying causes associated with acute joint injury and osteoarthritis.

🐾 It supports healing after a joint injury or operation.

🐾 It improves and maintains healthy joints at any stage of life.

More benefits.......

🐾 Complements prescription joint pain treatments.

🐾 Not only is it endorsed by veterinarians like us, but surgeons too.

🐾 Safe to take long-term.

🐾 Even if you have a fussy cat, the formula is highly palatable. It can simply be mixed in with your cat's wet food.

🐾 For large and giant dog breeds with higher risk of developing joint issues, consider using 4CYTE™ as a protective and preventative measure against joint damage.

‼️‼️ 5% off any 4CYTE™ product* ‼️‼️

Our online retail partner PetPA is offering 5% off your 4CYTE™ order, plus you'll also receive free shipping!*

IS MY DOG FAT?? ....More often than not we come across dogs that are indeed overweight. Different breed of dogs will have different body shapes and sizes. For example a greyhound is skinny and their ribs are very visible. Where as a British bulldog is more stocky and compact in body shape.
We as pet owners need to make sure our dogs are kept at a healthy weight.
Just like humans, dogs that are overweight are more susceptible to having health issues. Excess weight can lead to osteoarthritis and spinal issues, diabetes, urinary issues and heart issues like cognitive heart failure.
Dogs that are over weight have a poor quality of life and lower life expectancy.

Tips to help your dog loose weight is reducing the amount of treats, switching to a weight management food brand, exercise every day, reducing the amount of food and adding no starch vegetables like carrots into their daily meals.

If you would have any questions please call the clinic on 4057 8677 or if you would like to track your dogs weight loss journey, feel free to come into clinic and weight them weekly.
