The Importance of getting Lumps and Bumps Checked.

Always best to get any lumps and bumps checked on your dog, especially if they change in size or colour.

Our very own Jujubee has had what we thought a lipoma. We’d noticed that it seemed to be larger so rather than risk it she went in for a lumpectomy to have it removed.

After sending it off to the labs we discovered it was a very rare but slow growing cancer called Subcutaneous Haemangioendothelioma.

Thankfully, we were lucky enough to discover it before any indication of its spread and Jujubee is recovering well.

Always, ALWAYS, get lumps and bumps checked on your dog.

Little Pebble had her surgery last week and recovered nicely in our special red light recovery cages. Did you know that dogs can’t really see the colour red in the same way that humans do. Instead, they process reds as shades of grey.

The beauty of these cages is it allows our staff to properly monitor your fur babies in the perfect environment, without ever disturbing them during post-op recovery.

Pet bills and Human bills are about the same. The only difference is that human bills are covered by Medicare so you don’t see the full amount.

We offer GapOnly Insurance claims for more than 30 Insurance providers so you get savings on the spot. And, most claims only take 5-10 mins to process. 🐾

A very special day today as our very own Practice Manager, Harlow, celebrates 5 years of being in remission and his first day of officially being considered cured. 🎉🥳CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Cancer affects humans and animals alike and we are hoping to bring chemotherapy treatments to Melbourne Dog Clinic next year.

Lumps & Bumps

Thankfully, many lumps and bumps turn out to be nothing to be worried about but sometimes they may be an indicator of something more serious.

In the first photo Dr Don and Nurse Dean remove a small mammary lump and in the second photo Dr Vicky and Nurse Gayle prepare for a lump-off on our very own Jujubee (a lipoma she has had for years but best now to remove it and send off for histology to be extra safe).

Always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to finding a new lump on your dog. And even a diagnosed benign lump should be rechecked every 6-12 months. 🐾

Dog Grooming in the Hart (IYKYK) of Camberwell.

Fear Free Grooming for dogs of all shapes and sizes even if they don’t have any fears. And no, we don’t charge extra for it. 🐾

Your dog may need a lifetime of grooming. Some dogs may even require a groom every 6-8 weeks.

We work with your dog to make the grooming experience positive. We don’t force your dog to submit to grooming but rather make grooming an enjoyable experience full of treats and praise.

Behaviour problems? Not a problem!
We are happy to accommodate your dog’s needs, be that a fear of other dogs or general anxiety around grooming. We’ll work with you to find a solution.

SO HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT?

We won’t push your dog to get the job done. This may mean we split the groom into two sessions or it may mean we take a bit longer or they go home with some bits no quite so perfect…in these cases, we will also discuss options with you to make future grooms easier for your dog. Maybe some behaviour medications may help? Our vets are here to give options.

Anything we can do to make grooming less stressful is good for your dog.

And remember, they may have a lifetime of grooming ahead of them so let’s work towards making that as pleasant as possible.

🌾🐾 SPRING & SUMMER ALERT: Grass Seeds & Your Pup’s Paws! 🐾🌾

As the weather warms up, we love spending more time outdoors with our furry friends but there’s something lurking in the grass that could cause your dog discomfort—GRASS SEEDS! 🌿

These tiny, sharp seeds can easily burrow deep into your dog’s paws, ears, eyes, or coat, leading to pain, inflammation or infection if not treated. This gorgeous Collie came in last week for a lameness check and we found more than 20 grass seeds on him. One grass seed was buried in-between his hind toes, while others were found under his armpit and elbows. In longcoated breeds like Collies, these can be doubly hard to find so he had a little anaesthetic to take the stress and pain away from the procedure and allowed us to have a good proper examination. But look how happy he is afterwards! He left our clinic all smiles and felt 1000% happier and more comfortable.

🔷KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR:
🔸Limping or shaking paws
🔸Redness or swelling around the paws, ears, or eyes
🔸Excessive licking or biting at paws

🔷PREVENTATIVE TIPS:
🔸Regularly check your dog’s paws after walks or outdoor play 🐾
🔸Trim their fur, especially between the toes ✂️
🔸Avoid areas with dense grass or weeds when possible 🌱
🔸If you find a seed, carefully remove it with tweezers or consult your vet!

Morris & Margo, the Cairn Terriers.

These little cuties came in for an extra special groom, known as Hand Stripping. This process removes hair shafts from the root. Hand Stripping is done mainly on Terrier breeds with wire coats, allowing excess hair and dead undercoat to be removed. When done properly, hand stripping is a very labor intensive process, requiring time and a skilled groomer to strip to perfection. Most importantly, it is non-painful and can be done even in a Fear Free manner.

Here we can see Margo being entirely relaxed on the grooming table, and the before and after photos show what a dramatic transformation hand stripping can result in. 🐾
