Mischievous Rusty

Thanks to his diligent owners and excellent detective work, Rusty narrowly escaped a potential disaster after ingesting a battery from a set of ear buds.

Ingestion of a battery is an emergency situation.

Thankfully, Rusty was able to vomit the battery up without needing an endoscope or surgery.

Our team is very proud to offer advanced imaging (including CT) and complex surgical services. Both were required for Winnie when he presented with intervertebral disk disease (IVDD).

IVDD in dogs can also be described as a ruptured, slipped, bulging or herniated disk.

Below is a video of him walking again thanks to Dr Eamon’s expertise in this field.

Dear pet parents,

The new financial year is upon us. It is likely we will continue to face price increases for many essential goods and services. Some of these increases will be subtle and some of them will be very challenging for our society.

As veterinary professionals, we know discussing finances is one of the most taxing aspects of this industry for both veterinarians and pet parents. Due to the absence of any subsidies such as those associated with human medical care (no Medicare for pets), veterinary bills are a shock for many hardworking people. For some, a very confronting one.

Our leadership team has had lengthy discussions on how we can compromise and ease the already stressful time for the local community. Despite the trends of the new financial year, we decided to go against the current and do something very important for pet parents.

We will be freezing our consultation fee for the upcoming future.
We will be decreasing our fees for emesis (making pets vomit), our most common professional fee.
We will be significantly decreasing our fees for end-of-life appointments.

While we struggle to face current economic conditions like any other small business in Australia, it is our obligation to serve the community. We understand the importance of our work and are trying our best to make it more accessible for local pet parents.

Please remember that finances are a hard part of our jobs too. We rely on your honest communication and your ability to be solution-focused with us, as all we want is to find the best plan for you and your pet.

As always, thank you for staying with us during this journey.

Stay safe!

Regards,
Canberra Veterinary Emergency Service Leadership team.

The face of regret… Maximus a 5 month old Labrador did what Labradors do .. ate something he shouldn’t.

Our fantastic team stayed late for emergency surgery. Rope was removed from his intestines and he was discharged the next day, expected to make a full recovery.

📣 Avian Influenza Outbreak in Greater Sydney

A highly pathogenic strain of Avian Influenza has now been detected on two poultry properties and an Emergency Order has been issued for the Hawkesbury region. Movement restrictions have been placed for the area.

This strain of Avian Influenza is H7N8 and it is not the same as the H5N1 strain causing destruction of bird populations worldwide. It is also not connected to the outbreak in Victoria. Humans are considered a low risk of contracting avian influenza.

Please report any sick or deceased birds (of any kind) to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888.

For bird and pet poultry owners, biosecurity measures to immediately engage:

Avoid contact with wild birds
• Do not bring home sick or injured wildlife or stray birds
• Where possible bring outdoor birds inside
• Contain backyard flocks and do not allow them to wander
• Enclose aviaries and chicken pens

Prevent contamination of food and water by wild birds and rodents
• Use covered feed and water containers
• Remove old food daily and consider removing all food overnight to discourage rodents
• Keep feed in bins with lids
• Clean and disinfect food and water containers regularly

Keep the area they are housed and surrounding areas clean and tidy
Clean and disinfect food/water containers regularly
Quarantine new birds or consider no new additions at this time
Do not self medicate your pet if they are sick

Symptoms of Avian Influenza
- Sudden death
- Respiratory symptoms: gasping, trouble breathing, watery eyes
- Swelling around head and eyes; the skin may have purple discolouration
- Neurological symptoms: tremors, twisted necks
- Diarrhoea
- generally unwell, loss of appetite and lethargy
- reduced egg production in chickens

We also recommend that pet poultry owners follow NSW DPI, Wildlife Health Australia and Animal Health Australia for updates.

We are currently experiencing an outbreak in the region. Under advice from local authorities, we are unable to see any bird species until further notice.

Avian Influenza (AI). Do you know what to look out for?

A wide variety of birds can become infected by avian influenza (AI), including chickens, turkeys, quail, pheasants, pigeons, emus, ostriches, ducks, geese as well as many aviary and wild bird species.

- Sudden death without signs of illness
- Purple discolouration of wattles, combs and legs
- Coughing, sneezing or breathing difficulties
- Swelling around the head and neck
- Watery or green diarrhea
- Sudden decrease in egg production

If you see these or other unusual signs of disease, or death in your birds, call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
