Today our Wednesday group adventure walk was picked up from home and visited Majura Pines. The dogs enjoyed a mix of on and off-lead fun, with zoomies and splashing in muddy puddles. Group adventures are all about ensuring their needs are met through structured exercise and enrichment, allowing them to express their playful nature while socialising with others. A quick clean and towel dry before being dropped back at home for a nap. If you want more information on group walks check out our website:

Why Group Walks Are the Best Choice for Your Dog

As a busy dog mum, you want the best for your furry friend, and that’s exactly what group walks provide. Unlike daycare, group walks offer the perfect balance of exercise, training, and socialisation, all tailored to your dog’s unique needs.

Here’s why group walks stand out
**Training Included:** Your dog will practice essential commands like sit, stay, drop, recall, and loose-lead walking.
- **Safe Socialisation:** Small groups of up to four dogs ensure your pup is comfortable, reducing overstimulation.
- **Better Behaviour:** Group walks help reduce on-lead reactivity by easing frustration and providing proper exercise.
- **Age-Appropriate Exercise:** Your dog gets exercise suited to their size and energy levels — no overexertion like in daycare.
- **Improved Home Behaviour:** The structure of group walks leads to better manners and a calmer dog at home.

While you’re busy with work or life, your dog is getting the exercise and attention they deserve. Book your group walk today and give your dog the fulfilling experience they need!

Did you know that the olfactory bulb (OB), is a critical structure in the brain, plays a pivotal role in how animals process smells? It acts as a central hub for olfactory information, helping animals detect and interpret odors, which is vital for behaviors like feeding, communication, and territorial marking.

The OB is located at the front of the brain, just behind the nose, and its size and shape can vary across species. For example, dogs have a remarkable olfactory capacity—10,000 to 100,000 times better than humans! This is due to their high density of olfactory receptors and the specialized way their brains process smells. Their superior sense of smell helps in tracking scents, detecting illness, and even assisting law enforcement in finding drugs and missing people.

In both dogs and cats, the OB serves as a gateway between the external world (the smells they encounter) and the internal brain processes. Changes in the OB's size or shape, often due to aging, injury, or disease, can lead to olfactory impairments. This is especially important in understanding conditions like Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, where the OB may shrink, resulting in a diminished sense of smell.

Interestingly, recent studies have shown that the cranial structure and morphology of the OB are linked to olfactory efficiency. For example, head conformation can influence the OB's size, which in turn affects an animal's ability to detect scents. While much is understood about canine olfaction, feline olfaction is less explored, though some studies suggest cats may also have an impressive sense of smell.

In Summary: The olfactory bulb is vital in understanding how animals interact with their environment. By studying it, veterinarians can detect early signs of neurological issues or aging, which can be crucial for treating diseases and improving the quality of life for our pets.

So next time your dog sniffs around, remember that their nose—and their olfactory bulb—is doing some incredible work!

27/11/2024

Training your dog isn’t just about teaching commands—it’s a fun way to bond and build a stronger relationship with them! Whether you’re working on basics like sit, stay, or recall, all dogs can benefit from ongoing training.

The benefits? More freedom for your dog to enjoy the outdoors, fulfil their needs, and stay safe—all while having fun!

Top tip: Make training rewarding! Use treats, toys, or praise to keep them engaged. And remember, patience is key—every dog learns at their own pace. You may need to make adjustments to suit your individual dog.

A well-fitting dog harness is more than just a walking accessory—it plays a crucial role in supporting your dogs skeletal health! By ensuring the harness conforms to your dog's unique anatomy, you can prevent pressure points, promote freedom of movement, and avoid discomfort. The style of harness pictured restricts a dog's shoulder movement and is not recommended. Instead look for a harness with a Y-shaped front that's adjustable and fits your dog well. A Y shape doesn't cut across the dogs shoulders or elbows and will be more comfortable to wear. The harness I recommend is any style of Ruffwear branded harness as they fit the above criteria.

Housekeeping

Appointment Time Windows- From January 2025 I am reintroducing time windows for appointments due to not having access to some dogs due to their owners not being at home. Time windows will be 1 hour which is common practice in the industry. Your time window will be allocated in the notes section of your booking in Scout For Pets. To login you will need to use the Scout for Pet Owners. If access has not been arranged for your time window the following fees apply: 1st occurrence- no action, 2nd occurrence 50% cancellation fee of total appointment cost, 3rd occurrence- future appointments cancelled (discretion used for extenuating circumstances). I recommend having a key lock box set up in a secure location to provide access to your dog if you are not at home. Backyard or courtyard pick ups are an option if you have a gate that can be used for picking up and dropping off safely. Please make sure someone is home for pick up and drop off or make alternative arrangements for keys/gates as mentioned above.

Booking Changes- Please keep in mind that all one-on-one dog walking and walk and train services are at full capacity. This means that there is limited space for changing/moving appointments around. Please provide as much notice as possible for cancellations. I understand that emergencies happen such as illness to humans or dogs. This is why bookings are flexible. If you are going on holidays, or unable to provide access to your dog for an appointment please cancel your booking in advance.

Are your details up to date?- Please make sure your details in Scout For Pets have been updated regularly. Make sure you have an emergency contact phone number alternative to your own. Please include your Veterinarians details in case of an emergency. Keep your dog’s profile up to date including any changes in their health.

Invoices- Payment must be made on the day of your booking. If you have more than two outstanding invoices, walks can be placed on hold until payment is received.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Gemma & Maggie

E Collars 🛑 did you know they are illegal in the ACT?

Section 13 of the Animal Welfare Act 1992 (2001 Amendments) prohibits the administration of an electric shock to an animal, and the placing of an electric shock device on an animal.

Unfortunately I frequently see posts from interstate dog trainers advocating for and using E collars on clients dogs. Queensland is one state that is behind the times still allowing them to be used.

Aversive tools (prong and E collars) are unnecessary and cause harm.

Poppy and Alfiie loved trying the Prime100 SPD salmon flavour today.

Cut into small pieces you can freeze portions of it in the freezer to make it last longer.

Perfect for high value training treats, it can be purchased from pet shops in their fridge.

☀️Housekeeping - weather☁️

Walks are not cancelled due to weather unless there are extreme weather conditions. This includes hot weather and rain. Walks are cancelled at my discretion and can occur suddenly in the event of the weather becoming hazardous.

Examples of extreme weather are temperatures above 35 degrees, thunderstorms and torrential rainfall. Weather is closely monitored every day and checked multiple times per day. The latest weather observations are checked which has up to date temperatures every 30 minutes.

On Wednesday the temperature was 22 degrees at 12pm, reaching the maximum of 26.7 at 4pm. Most walks are completed before the hottest part of the day, the late afternoon.

Dogs that are higher risk:
Brachycephalic breeds
Greyhounds
Huskies/Malamutes and similar breeds
Overweight dogs
Senior dogs
Health conditions that have been disclosed

Currently there is only one dog with bookings that fits this criteria.

I've been working with hundreds of dogs for five years not once have I had a dog requiring medical treatment. That's zero incidents of paw pad injuries or heat stress I take their welfare very seriously. There has been multiple cancellations during this time at my discretion due to severe weather events which means I loose income. Dog welfare is my first priority!

Measures taken during Summer:
Checking the pavement/road for temperature
Use of shade and breaks
Reduced operating hours
Shorter walk times
Excursions to other locations with more shade or access to air conditioning for exposure training
Swimming
Extra water breaks
Training sessions instead of a walk

If you have concerns about your dog please get in touch so we can discuss the best options. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Peanut butter lovers read this post 🍞

I compared 3 peanut butters:

1-Trusty $6.50, 350g from Bunnings
2-Doggy Butters $8.94, 250g at Petbarn
3- Mayvers unsalted PB $5.80, 375g at Woolworths, $4.60 Coles special this week

🥜Trusty-made in China 😳
🥜Doggy Butters contains a calming ingredient, probably not going to have any therapeutic benefits, no country of origin listed on packaging
🥜Mayvers unsalted, ingredients 100% peanuts, currently on special for $4.60 at Coles, a high quality peanut butter made in Australia and suitable for dogs.

If you wish, you can purchase Mayvers dog peanut butter which also contains glucosamine and Omega-3. I couldn't find any when looking online.

🍯My top pick: Mayvers Unsalted Peanut Butter available at Woolworths & Coles.

Always feed Peanut Butter in moderation!
