As a general rule, most dogs don’t require regular ear cleaning. However, there are some dogs that have ears requiring a little extra attention. Dogs that are prone to ear infections, or those with floppy ears or hairy ear canals, may require additional cleaning. It’s important to only clean your dog’s ears if they actually need it, otherwise you could increase the chance of ear infections. If you aren’t sure what’s right for your dog, reach out to our friendly team.

We recommend giving flea and tick prevention to pets year-round. Cats, even those that don’t go outside very often, should be protected with either a monthly or three-monthly treatment, depending on the product. Any cats living or visit a paralysis tick zone, must be on tick prevention year-round to help prevent tick paralysis from developing. However, even with tick prevention, we still recommend daily body checks for ticks to further reduce risk.

Did you know that more than 40% of Australian dogs are overweight? A quick way to tell if your dog is at an ideal body condition (or not) is to run your hands along their chest and waist. If you can feel their ribs (but not too prominently) without pressing firmly and they have a defined, tucked in waist, they are probably in a good body condition. If you aren’t sure, our team is always happy to assess your pet’s condition and develop a plan to get them to an ideal shape.

One of the most common infectious diseases in cats is called ‘cat flu’. Just like the flu in humans, cat flu can be caused by several different viruses including calicivirus and herpesvirus. While often self-limiting, it can cause severe disease in some cats. If your cat develops a persistent cough, heavy nasal discharge, ulcers of the
mouth or nose, inappetence or has difficulty breathing, they should see a vet. Treatments are available to reduce symptoms.

If you’re planning on putting your dog in boarding these holidays, it’s important their annual vaccinations are up to date. Most kennels will require proof of a C5 vaccination in the past 12 months to be accepted for boarding. However, if you really want to ensure your dog is protected, they need to have the vaccine booster at least 2 weeks prior to boarding, to ensure maximum immunity. Contact the clinic today if you need your dog’s vaccines boosted.

When going away, it can be difficult to know what’s the best option for your cat. Should you book a pet sitter, or should you take them to a cattery? When trying to decide, take into account your individual cat’s needs and personality. If they have medical conditions or are elderly, they might require additional care. Never leave your cats unattended for extended periods of time. If you’re unsure what’s best for your cat, our team would be happy to guide you.

Whether your dog loves going for a drive or not, it’s important to always prioritise safety. Dogs should be secured in the rear of the car, using either a car harness and tether or a travel crate. This is because in an accident, dogs could become airborne and risk serious injury to themselves and others in the car. If travelling in a ute, ensure dogs are tethered appropriately to the middle of the tray so they cannot fall off the sides. Never leave a dog in a hot car.

Keep fleas off your dog all year round.

Is your dog scratching more than usual? Fleas may be the cause! Now the weather is warming up, fleas and other parasites begin to swell in numbers. Look for flea dirt (black specks), red bumps, unsatiable scratching or self-biting or hair loss. Year-round parasite prevention is key to avoiding infestations. Ask us about the best flea control for your dog.

Ear infections in cats should be promptly assessed.

Cats can get painful and itchy ear infections from mites, allergies, or bacteria. Signs include head shaking, scratching, discharge or odour from the ears. If you notice your cat is scratching their head or ears a lot, shaking their head, has a bad smell or thick, black discharge from their ears, they might have an ear infection. Early treatment results in better long-term outcomes, so don’t delay a visit to the vet.

Check you dog’s paws for irritation.

Licking or redness between your dog’s toes can be caused by allergies, grass seeds, injuries or infections. In Spring, we see an increase in both allergic skin disease as well as injuries caused by penetrating grass seeds. Dog’s with particularly hairy feet and toes tend to be at increased risk. Persistent irritation to your pet’s skin should be checked by a vet without delay, as early treatment can prevent worse outcomes.

Protect your cat from parasites this Spring.

Warmer weather means more fleas, ticks, worms and other unwanted creatures. Keep your cat protected from these parasites with regular prevention. Untreated parasites can pose a risk to other animals, humans and cause severe irritation and even disease in our pets. All cats, including indoor cats, should be on regular parasite protection. Ask us which products suit your feline friend.
