Patient Success! *Graphic Photo Warning*

Meet Rosie, a precious 8 year old Staffy. Earlier in her life, she had her right hind leg amputated (yes she’s a tripod). Last year, she visited us with a lump on her left hind leg. Unfortunately, the results weren’t as favorable as we hoped. Rosie was diagnosed with a Mast Cell Tumor (MCT), the most common malignant skin cancer in canine patients and known for its aggressive nature.
MCTs contain a cluster of mast cells (white blood cells) that, when activated, trigger an allergic response and attract more cells to fight infection. Low-grade mast cell tumors are typically removed to prevent metastasis.
While this isn’t Rosie’s first MCT, her previous amputation made surgical removal impractical. Our vets conducted extensive research and concluded that a Stelfonta injection would be our best option.
Stelfonta is a relatively new product, which is injected directly into the MCT. Initially, the injection breaks down the cell walls, before disrupting blood vessels, and destroys the tumor. This leaves a wound/pocket for fresh, healthy skin and fur to grow back. However, meticulous medication schedules must be followed before and after the injection to minimize side effects.
On the day of the injection, the tumor should swell and change color. Within a few days, the growth will begin to necrotize, appearing black and having a distinct odor. The small mass we started with transformed into a large, open wound that looks extremely nasty and painful. Healing of the wound is best done by second intention, which means no surgical intervention.
Miss Rosie gave us quite a scare throughout her treatment, but after a lot of hard from the Animal Referral Hospital, everyone within Belconnen Animal Hospital and her amazing owner, Rosie has now fully recovered and is tumour free! She is most definitely still a regular at the clinic, but we are so glad that none of this process has deterred her from us.
Now, for informative purposes (and to serve all of your curious little minds), we have included some photos of our experience with Rosie. Please exercise caution while viewing as some images may be disturbing.

Everyone meet Gertrude (Gertie) 😍
This little angel is an 18 week old, Cavalier King Charles X Cocker Spaniel (a Cockalier, if you please). She was the most precious little angel baby for her third puppy vaccines, and spent little to no time in her cage when she spent the day with us 😉
We absolutely LOVE Miss Gertie and cannot wait to see the gorgeous good girl that she grows up to be!

As we make our way into 2025, we have decided to change our social media a little. So this year, each month, we will be taking to our socials and asking clients (and followers) to share themed photos of their pets! Each month will have a new theme, and staff will vote on the best photo submission from the month. Our winning Pet of the month will be featured in our Facebook cover photo and pinned on our Instagram page!
So keep your eye out, because our first contest will start next week, and voting will commence in the final week of the month!

Keep your pet cool this summer ☀️🥵

As we continue through a typical Canberra summer, it is imperative that we keep our pets safe from heatstroke. Heatstroke can happen to any pet and can be life threatening if not treated urgently.
Be sure to keep an eye on your pet for any signs such as; excessive panting, drooling, disorientation, weakness and/or discomfort.

Tips to prevent heatstroke include:
- Having fresh water and shaded areas available at all times
- Limiting exercise during peak heat hours
- Never leave your pet in a hot car (or tied up in the sun!)

If you suspect that your pet is suffering from heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice!

With 2025 just around the corner, we want to remind you all about firework safety!
As beautiful as they are to watch, fireworks can be quite distressing for some of our furred companions. So here is a short list of some firework safety tips for your furry families this New Years:
1. Provide a safe and secure environment - some pets may feel safest in their crate, others under the bed; wherever their safe space may be, ensure they have ongoing access.
2. Ensure that your yard/house in enclosed and your pets are easily identifiable - once those loud noises start, fight or flight will kick in and many of our pets will try to take to the hills!
3. Consider clothing - thunder-shirts, blankets, happy-hoodies, and many other options can aid in stress relief during these times (these can also be extremely useful for thunderstorms 😉)
4. Calming products - products like Adaptil/Feliway diffusers/spray and Zylkene capsules can be purchased through your local vet or local pet stores to aid in stress relief (for cases of severe phonophobia (fear of loud noises), please consult your regular vet).

We hope that you all had an amazing Christmas and look forward to another year of memories being made with you all!

Everyone meet Digby 😴🐶
This little man came in for his second puppy vaccinations about two weeks ago. He was the absolute bestest boy for his injections and was having the best little snooze in his humans pram 😍💤
We love seeing our patients relaxed and stress free when they come to clinic (don't worry, we love our anxious beans too), but how extra cute is Mr Digby all cuddled up down there!? 🥰

Merry Christmas from our family to yours. Wishing you all a joyful and safe holiday ❤

Stella the Wonder Dog 🦸‍♀️
This beautiful little girl came to visit us for the first time back in September for her second vaccinations 💉🩹 During her stay, Miss Stella got plenty of love from all of the nurses, but most importantly she got snuggles with Dr Kabs (as seen in the second photo).
This precious girl is now roughly 6 months old and we can't wait to continue to watch her grow into her paws ❤🐾

BEES!!! 🐝
Yes, I know, they look adorable with all the swelling and it is pretty funny to us too. But, did you know, that all of this swelling is actually a result of anaphylaxis? That's right, dogs are allergic to bees too.
If you suspect that your furry friend has played with or eaten one of these ✨ spicy flies ✨then give us a call on 6254 2122, so we can help you get them back in the yard and chasing the bees all over again.

The cone of shame... 😭
Every pet owner has to endure the horror of their pet wearing a cone at some point, and every pet owner will tell you how HORRIBLE it is. The thing about cones, is they are actually there to help with recovery (as annoying as they are).
So this is a friendly reminder, that if your vet (or vet nurse) tells you that your pet needs a cone... KEEP THE CONE ON! Because as much as we love seeing you all, we also love to see your fur babies recover smoothly from whatever injury they have and get back to being themselves as quickly as possible

26/11/2024

As we come into these warmer months, we want to remind all of our furry friends (and their human counterparts) to maintain regular flea and tick prevention. Paralysis ticks are extremely prominent throughout the South Coast of Australia, and have a mortality rate of approximately 5% in pets (this is inclusive of patients who receive treatment).
So pop on down to the clinic and get your preventatives today to keep your furry friends safe this Christmas season ❤️
