We are situated on around 18 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. With a wide variety of

both native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia, there is something for everyone. Wander in and have a casual stroll around the park, or make a day of it with family, friends and make use of our picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities. We are best known for our amazing "up close and personal" animal encounters, which provide visitors with an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

📣 Important Notice: Partial Zoo Closure on Monday 16 December.

Due to forecasted extreme temperatures on Monday the 16th December, the National Zoo and Aquarium will be partially closed for the day to ensure the safety and comfort of our animals, visitors, and staff.

Limited services will be operating: The Rhino Bistro kitchen will be closed, with no hot food being available. Only cold drinks, ice blocks, and other light refreshments will be available for purchase at our outlets.

Visitor facilities: Our reception and bistro areas will remain open, staffed by our dedicated team.

Please note that our animals are of the highest priority, so in mind of their comfort and safety during this heatwave, animals will be given all access to off-display areas. This means some of our animals may not be visible during this period.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. If you plan to visit, please stay hydrated and take necessary precautions against the heat.

Our Children & Family Programs are now open for 2025!

This include the ever popular Zoocation School Holiday Program in January.

THE SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM WITH A DIFFERENCE!

7 Hours

About
During a fun-filled day, children will get up close and personal with many of the zoo’s animals, play games, make toys for the animals, and learn something along the way. Staffed and developed by the experienced Education Guides of the National Zoo and Aquarium, this program prides itself on delivering a program like no other.

Zoocation groups are of mixed ages so we can keep siblings and friends together (if desired). Booking into the correct age range is still important as we follow strict staff to student ratios. It also helps us keep an extra close eye on your young Zoocationers as they spend the day exploring the zoo!

Who is it for?
Children who are entering Years 1 to 7 in 2025. Students must have completed at least one term of Primary School (Foundation/Kindergarten) before attending Zoocation. Children entering Kindergarten in 2025 are welcome to attend Zoocation in April!
