Pregnancy ultrasound for animals 🤰
Do you know that we use ultrasound to diagnose pregnancy in dogs and cats as well? This can be done from around day 28 of gestation. We also use it to determine the heartbeat of the foetuses which give us valuable information about how the babies are doing. It is however not a very accurate way to predict the number of kittens/ puppies. How else do you think we give a more accurate prediction?
Who said you cant train your cat like a dog!

Preanaesthetic Blood Testing
Why do we recommend this?
🩸makes the general anaesthetic safer by picking up anything that would contraindicate putting the animal under anaesthetic E.g. kidney disease. Under GA blood pressure drops that can make kidney disease worse.
🩸 make sure the animal is safe for surgery. E.g. assessing for anaemia (low red blood cells) or low platelets (what the body uses to clot) - the last thing we want to do is cause bleeding through surgery when the animal is unable to clot naturally.
🩸 incidental findings that mean we can start treating medical conditions earlier and get a better outcome from treatment.
🩸 when done in young animals prior to a routine surgery e.g. desexing, it allows us to have a record of the animal’s ‘healthy normal values’ so that if they become sick we can compare to their normal values to see how worrying these changes in the blood are.
What is the process like?
🩸 very quick and no more painful that a vaccination.
🩸 blood is usually taken from the jugular as this is the fastest method since most animal’s leg veins are much smaller than ours.
🩸 we send to the lab for a general health profile of haematology (blood cells), biochemistry (chemicals in the blood relating to organs and body systems) and electrolytes.
