We are very pleased to announce that The Coolroom has received a grant under the 10,000 Gigs: The Victorian Gig Fund fund which will support 20 gigs over the next nine months in the The Coolroom at The Northern Arts Hotel.

The first round of 10,000 Gigs: The Victorian Gig Fund will fund 144 venues to stage paid gigs by local artists. Venues awarded grants include iconic Melbourne venues such as The Tote, The Jazzlab, Mamma Chen’s and Laundry, regional venues like Ballarat’s Volta, Barwon Heads Hotel and Theatre Royal, Taproom and The Coolroom in Castlemaine, along with suburban venues including Narre Warren’s District 14.

Gigs over the next few months we have already announced that will recieve this support include Sally Ford and the Idiomatics, Peter and the Wolves, Jesse Lawrance Music, Kavisha Mazzella Music and Charles Maimarosia.

Castlemaine musician, writer and disability advocate, Eliza Hull, has been nominated for Best Regional Act in the 2024 Music Victoria Awards, while the Bridge Hotel and the Coolroom at the
Northern Arts Hotel have both been nominated for the Best Regional Venue.

Eliza, who is sitting alongside the likes of G Flip, Tones & I, Miss Kaninna, Angie McMahon, and Maple Glider in the nominations, is an engaging and captivating performer who has been drawing a loyal fan base across the country – and we can proudly claim her as a Castlemaine local.

The Bridge is known for its incredible beer garden, chilled vibe and funky, talented, creative performances. A local favourite for many, the nomination is well deserved.

The Coolroom, located in the quaint and atmospheric Northern Arts Hotel, has been going from strength to strength producing incredible lineups of diverse artists. Another favourite haunt for locals it is well deserving of your vote.

Maggie Fooke is also showing her rarely shown 8min Animation Short Pleasure Domes an introspective response on the nature of landscape and the human response to it. Pleasure Domes was the first Australian Animation invited in competition to the Cannes Film Festival in 1988.

We are very pleased to announce we have been short listed for Music Victoria 2024 Awards Nominee: Best Regional Venue/ Presenter (Over 50 Gigs)

This nomination is recognition, we believe, for the tireless work our venue has done to create a program that connects our regional audience with the best in small venue acts possible in our active listening venue.

We have embraced music from a range of genres from jazz to experimental, from country to blues, world music and singer songwriter, nurturing both local talent and some of the best of Melbourne and touring acts from elsewhere, whilst providing a venue for new work, album launches and regular income for musicians.

A good friend of the Northern Arts Hotel Lis Johnson had her wonderful sculpture of the late Susan Ryan unveiled in the Rose garden next to Old Parliament House (now Museum of Australian Democracy).

The unveiling by Dane Quentin Bryce, was also to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the of the passing of the S*x Discrimination Act in 1984, legislation that Susan Ryan was instrumental in getting passed as the first women member of cabinet as the Minister for Women. The beautiful work was developed by Lis in her studio in Barkers Creek.

A new sculpture by Victorian artist Lis Johnson of the late Labor senator Susan Ryan has been unveiled in the Old Parliament House Senate Rose Gardens.
