EASTER AND PETS
Easter is a wonderful time for family and friends to get together. It is also a time for eating, drinking and Easter eggs for the young - and not so young.
Sadly, our Easter goodies can be toxic to our animals. They could cause illness and even death.
Chocolate contains Theobromine which is dangerous to dogs, cats, rabbits, and mice. Your dog may only need one small square of chocolate to make him sick and the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it can be.
Many chocolates contain nuts, raisins or sultanas which are also toxic.
It is important to put your dogs away for the Easter egg hunt. Dogs have a very keen sense of smell and we do not want them finding the eggs before the kids do!
If you want your dog to be a part of the Easter fun, purchase carob eggs (specially made for dogs) or an extra special treat like a deer antler or hoof for him to chew on while everyone is having Sunday lunch. You can also prepare a snuffle mat, Lickimat, dog puzzles or a food scatter to keep your dog occupied during the festivities.
Chocolate poisoning can initially cause vomiting and diarrhea, but may also lead to excitability, twitching, tremors, fits and life-threatening heart problems.
If you see any of these signs or think your dog may have gotten into your favourite Easter egg, contact your Vet immediately.
The Animal Poisons Helpline 1300 TOX PET https://animalpoisons.com.au/ is also a good point of contact for any suspected poisonings. You can speak to them directly and/or they have Emergency Instructions for you to follow.
Happy Easter everyone! Be safe and enjoy! The Dog Lady Orange
