🚨 Blocked Cats – A Life-Threatening Emergency 🚨

We’ve seen a sharp rise in “blocked” male cats lately, and it’s got us thinking: let’s be proactive. FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) and urinary blockages are serious, painful, and sadly very common in male cats—especially the young to middle-aged boys.

This condition can escalate fast and can be fatal if left untreated.

🧪 What causes a blockage?
The urethra (the narrow tube cats p*e through) can become blocked by:
🔸 Crystals or bladder stones
🔸 Mucus or inflammation (often from stress-related FIC)
🔸 Dehydration
🔸 Dry food-only diets – especially low-quality supermarket brands (no judgement, just facts!)
🔸 Obesity or inactivity
🔸 Stress or changes in the household

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
Keep a close eye if your cat is:
🔹 Straining to urinate
🔹 Frequently visiting the litter tray with little to no success
🔹 Crying, hiding, or showing signs of discomfort
🔹 Excessively licking around their ge****ls
🔹 Vomiting or off their food

💡 What can you do to help prevent it?
✅ Increase water intake – use fountains or add wet food
✅ Mix water into dry kibble
✅ Feed a high-quality diet
✅ Minimise stress around the home
✅ Encourage movement and healthy weight

💧As the weather cools, many cats drink less—and indoor/outdoor cats may hold their urine longer (because who enjoys p*eing on wet grass? 🌧️🙅‍♂️). All of this adds up to increased risk.

💸 A good quality diet and hydration can help prevent a blockage—saving your cat’s life and potentially thousands in emergency vet bills.

⏱️ Act fast. A blockage can lead to kidney failure or death in just 24–48 hours.

Buongiorno from sunny Italy!
So far in our 11 days, we have found a few adorable kitties.
I’d love to share photos of them with you. We have found them in the streets, a church and a winery.
The first kitty was not impressed with our silly attempts to call him over in our bad Italian- just flicked his tail at us. Oh well, we tried. I found one kitty for only €5- bargain - but didn’t think i could smuggle her through customs. 😂- Melinda x
