The Importance of Conducting Faecal Egg Counts in September

September marks the beginning of Spring. This is usually a time when environmental conditions influence the lifecycle of gastrointestinal parasites. By performing faecal egg counts (FECs) at this time, you can gauge the worm burden that your horses may have acquired over the winter. When it comes to de-worming, this helps in making informed decisions about managing parasite control strategies.

We have been experiencing an unusually warm end of Winter this year, so horse owners may start to see signs of worm infestation earlier than usual.

Testing now and within the coming few weeks is ideal.

A question I get asked a lot is "Why do horses in the same paddock have different worm burdens?"

There are several factors that can contribute to this:

* Individual Immune Response: Just like humans, horses vary in their immune responses to parasites. Some horses may have a stronger immune system that helps them resist worm infestations, while others may be more susceptible.

* Age and Health: Young horses and older horses generally have weaker immune systems compared to healthy adult horses, making them more susceptible to worm infestations.

* Individual Grazing Habits: Horses may have different grazing habits, leading to variations in their exposure to parasite larvae in the pasture. Some horses may graze closer to areas where parasite larvae are concentrated, while others may avoid those areas.

* Resistance to Dewormers: Some horses may develop resistance to certain deworming medications over time, leading to higher worm burdens despite treatment.

* Differences in Management Practices: Variations in deworming schedules, nutrition, and overall management practices can also influence a horse's susceptibility to parasites.

Overall, a combination of environmental and management factors contributes to the variation in worm burdens among horses in the same paddock. Regular monitoring and management strategies tailored to individual horses can help minimize the risk of worm infestations.

APRIL FEC STATISTICS
In the month of April, 60 horses in total had faecal samples tested for worms. Of those, 26 horses were light shedders, 7 horses were moderate shedders and 27 horses were heavy shedders.

All 27 heavy shedders are entitled to a free follow-up test within 2 weeks of worming, to ensure the count is now 0 or at least very low.
