Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus has recently been identified in Victoria, Queensland, and NSW. Your local veterinarian or Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline (1800 675 888) should be contacted if you suspect your animal has JE virus. 🦟

JE virus is part of the flavivirus family and is closely related to West Nile virus, Murray Valley encephalitis and dengue fever. The virus is spread via mosquitoes from within the natural reservoir of water bird populations and amplified within infected pig populations. Occasionally, horses, donkeys and humans can also become infected via mosquitoes, however, further transmission cannot occur between horses or humans. 🐎👩🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏼

Infection is mostly asymptomatic in horses, however, clusters with clinical signs can occur sporadically and can include fever, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of mucosa) and reluctance to move. Unfortunately, in a small number of cases severe clinical signs occur including impaired vision, muscle weakness or tremors, sweating, and neurological signs such as incoordination, difficulty swallowing, paralysis and collapse/coma. 👩‍⚕️

As always, prevention is better than a cure. The main prevention approach would be to reduce exposure and possible contact with mosquitoes. This can be achieved by rugging your horse, stabling during dawn and dusk and reducing contact with still water sources. Additionally, owners should avoid keeping horses on properties with pigs (including pet pigs). 🐷

West Nile virus has been detected in a small number of horses across NSW.

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus which can affect horses, people and other animals. Only mosquitoes can spread the disease.

The early stages of disease may be mistaken for colic. Initially horses may appear depressed and reluctant to move but these signs are soon followed by neurological signs.

Horse owners are encouraged to take extra precautions to reduce exposure to mosquitoes through rugging, insecticides and restricting grazing times when mosquitoes are most active.

West Nile virus is a notifiable disease in NSW. If you suspect a horse is showing signs of the disease, call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

More information on West Nile Virus can be found on the DPI website at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/animals-and-livestock/horses/health-and-disease/west-nile-virus

EMRT as a hands on modality uses palpation and assessment as well as the gentle rolling moves to bring about balance and release areas of tension .

In two treatments he was back out competing 🥳☘️🏇
