Something to think about.....
NSW Companion Animals act states that a dog must be on a leash at all times unless in an off leash area.
Cootamundra has Bradman oval, Muttama Creek walk and the off leash dog park.
Dogs owners maybe fined $330 if they do not have their dogs on a leash.

Sadly our Rangers have picked up a deceased ginger with white cat around the Sub area. Unfortunately the cat is not microchipped so they can't return it to the owners.
If you are missing one please contact the council.

Council has had an increased reports of people walking their dogs without a leash (not in designated off leash areas) and failing to clean up after their dog.
Please be reminded that under the NSW Companion Animal Act both of these are an offence. Penalty infringement notices can be issued for failing to comply.

Do you use a retractable leash? Maybe you need to read this article!! Then in a google search type 'retractable leash injuries"
These leads are not practical in any way. Do you really have control of your dog when it is 10 metres away?
Have a read and see what you think. The google search might make you reconsider using one of these leads.
We are so excited to say that our Animal Care Facility has said Goodbye to our last dog in the Facility headed to rescue to find her new home! We are empty for the first time in a long time!
Thank you to each and everyone who has helped us over the last 12 months!
Have a VERY Merry Christmas and a very safe new years!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT OUR FIREWORKS ARE ON SATURDAY NIGHT!!
A dog can hear 10 times better than a human. Fireworks typically explode at a staggering 145-150 decibels, so these explosions can be terrifyingly frightening and loud.
As many animals have a fear of fireworks they often injure themselves trying to escape the noise. Some dogs will jump or dig under fences. Others find their way onto busy roads and can be struck by vehicles.
If you’re not going to be at home, make sure you provide them with a safe, secure and comfortable environment. Whenever possible, bring your pet indoors.
Here are some simple steps to minimise firework and storm stress in pets:
*Ensure your pets are wearing ID tags and their microchip details are up to date.
*Ensure your pets are exercised and well fed before the fireworks start.
*keep your animals indoors in a safe, secure and comfortable environment.
*Leave the TV or radio on to mask any sounds. Remove any sharp objects that might cause injury to a panicking animal.
*If your pets are particularly prone to fireworks or storm panic, stay at home with them.
Reunited after 2 years missing. Microchipping is so important and it's the law to Microchip your companion animal

Have you checked your pet's microchip details lately? Got a new pet? Moved house? Changed your number?
So many times, pets are picked up but can not be returned as the animals details are out of date!
Did you know that if you sell or give away an animal its your responsibility to update the details - not the new owner!
You can update details by stopping in at your local council office, giving Council a call or visiting the Service NSW website.

Summer has come - remember to look after your pets during hot weather!
*Provide your pets with a cool, shaded area with good ventilation at all times.
*Make sure they have plenty of clean fresh water and extra water sources in case of spillage.
*Bring your pets indoors on hot, humid days if the indoor environment is cooler for the animal.
*Do not exercise your pets in hot, humid conditions. On hot days try to walk your dog very early in the morning or late in the evening when it is cool, and avoid the hottest part of the day.
*NEVER leave your dog in a car or vehicle!
*Small animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, rats and mice are highly susceptible to heatstroke.
*Leave water out for our wildlife.

Have you checked your that your animals especially dogs have name tags on? Have you checked your fences and gates?
Storms are predicted for the coming days and with that we see an increase in the number that are lost!
Storm phobia is a researched and proven distressed state of an animal which can be caused by the noise of thunder and visual stimulus of lightning. Some pets can sense coming storms long before humans can, which means they can go from placid and comfortable to agitated and timid very quickly. Be prepared!!

We're mid-way through National Desexing Month already 😱 This is your reminder to book your pet in for desexing while costs are reduced and spaces are available! 📆💸
We've had an incredibly busy few weeks as pet owners across Cootamundra and surrounds have booked in their pets for desexing. We're extremely pleased to see the amount of local pet owners taking this opportunity to protect their pet's health and help our community by support the NDN's fight against pet overpopulation!
Pet overpopulation is an enormous issue. Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, however our pet population far outweighs the demand. Many cats and dogs end up in pounds or shelters and are unable to find homes, being euthanised as a result. The National Desexing Network aims to end this overpopulation by providing easier and more affordable access to pet desexing, reducing the amount of unwanted litters that end up in pounds and shelters nationwide.
We're urging pet owners in the Cootamundra community to desex your pets, particularly cats, before the long breeding season in the warmer months. As veterinarians, we know firsthand the stress and heartache involved with unwanted litters, and desexing is the best method of prevention ❎
Give us a call on (02) 6942 4100 to inquire about pricing, and book your pet in whilst spaces are available ☎️

We often hear that people think of the pound as a ‘’bad’ place for an animal to be, so we thought we would clear that up and show you the positive side of our Animal Care Facility!
When an animal is lost, we are one of their first calls that an owner will make. If you have found a lost Cat or Dog - please contact the Council or drop them to one of the local vets.
The ‘Pound’ isn’t a bad place, they are given a place that they are free from danger, no chance of them being hit by a car!
They are given a safe, warm place to sleep. They have a bed that is protected from the rain, wind and sun. They have access to fresh clean water and food every day. They are given a jacket to keep them warm on those cold nights, they are given toys and treats to keep them amused. Some animals that come to us, don’t even have the basic need of food and water met every day.
Our Ranger works with them every day making sure they are happy and healthy.
The ‘Pound’ isn’t a bad place, some animals that come to us don’t even know how good humans can be to them, and they leave us knowing that we can bring them as much joy as they bring to us.
Animals that are not reclaimed are found new homes and rescue. They head off to a new life, to a loving family.
The picture below is of two dogs that have recently left Cootamundra’s Animal Care Facility. One came to us with so much fear of people, her coat dull, and her eyes empty. When she left headed to Forgotten Souls Dog Rescue, she loved people, loved pats and cuddles, her coat was shinny and her eye’s sparkling.
The other dog came to us matted, flies lava in her coat, struggling to move with the knots in her fur, she had the saddest face and wouldn’t play. When she left with SMART animal Rescue to find a place of her own, she had a fresh new haircut, smelly amazing, she would play with us and her tail didn’t stop wagging!
For these and many others, the Animal Care Facility is just the start of their new, better life!

Cootamundra Animal Care Facility is part of the Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council, located in the Riverina district of NSW. Located 4 hours west of Sydney and only a couple away from Canberra. Rehoming number R25100127
We are on a mission to give all animals a chance at an amazing life, after finding themselves in our hands. We work endless to find rescue or adoption for all the animals. While they are waiting give them positive experiences and get to know each animal as much as we can to help potential adopters and rescues.
Private adoptions are always welcome but prices vary depending on individual animals. All animals who leave the pound must be microchip and registered, this is the law. We encourage you to have an animal de-sexed before leaving the pound at your cost, this way the registration fee is much lower.
The pound is open by appointment only so please ring the number below to make an appointment.
We are happy to help to meet transport for rescues and adopters at their own expense.
We are about education when it comes to pet ownership and are more then willing to help in anyway possible. If you have any questions at all please call our office on 1300 459 689 and ask to be transferred through to the Cootamundra Ranger.
