🌟So, what’s the difference?🌟

Not all omega 3s are created equal. From 11 types, the 3 most important are ALA, EPA and DHA.

🌱ALA – alpha-linolenic acid
Found mostly in plants. Contains 18 carbon atoms.

🐟EPA – eicosapentaenoic acid
Mostly found in fatty fish and algae. Contains 20 carbon atoms.

🐠DHA – docosahexaenoic acid
Mostly found in fatty fish and algae. Contains 22 carbon atoms.

🤔Which Omega 3s are the most important?
EPA’s and DHA’s are the most important types, they are abundant in fish oil, fatty fish and many other seafoods as well as algae. EPA's and DHA's can be formed from ALA's, which exists in certain high-fat plant foods such as flax seeds (Linseeds) and chia seeds however it is a very low conversion rate.

🤔So, is feeding oil good or bad for horses?
Horses in heavy work have a larger requirement for energy and feeding a high grain diet can come with issues. Oils generate less heat during the digestive and metabolic process compared to grain reducing electrolyte losses and the amount they need to sweat to keep cool. Horses just like humans need omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids in their diet and the best omega 3s are the EPA’s and DHA’s. Oil can be a fantastic way of helping your horses increase their energy levels without increasing their grain feed load and potentially, reducing tying up and nervousness.

☺️Research what you’re feeding your horse, where does the oil you’re feeding your horse come from? Does it contain the most important omega 3’s?

🥵Storage of oils in our heat and humidity.
To ensure that the oil does not deteriorate in quality, oxidise or become rancid it is best to store in a sealed, dark container and in the cool, preferably a fridge.
