1. Get pet insurance, IVDD is Intervertebral Disc Disease. Dachshunds are more likely to suffer from IVDD than many other breeds[1]. An estimated 19-24 % of Dachshunds will show clinical signs related to IVDD during their lifetime[2].

IVDD can lead to paralysis. Surgery can cost up to $10,000 and sometimes more depending on who you use and if it's after hours etc.

2. Consider ramps and stairs to prevent joint injuries.

3. Use rugs and the likes so dogs aren't on slippery surfaces to prevent injuries.

4. If your Dachie does suffer from IVDD resulting in paralysis, get them to a Vet pronto. If your dog still has deep pain sensation then you do not need to do surgery unless you want to go down this road.

You can work with an animal physiotherapist and other canine rehab professionals to help your dog recover, it's going to cost $ and for a while.

Regardless of your decision, it needs to be well researched and understood, ideally before you need to make a speedy decision at 2am.

5. Never allow your Dachie to be fat, this may increase the risk of negative outcomes of IVDD.

6. Have them on an omega joint support supplement to prevent and fight inflammation. You can start this the day they come home as puppies. We personally use Antinol Australia.

7. Keep your Dachie fit and fab, supporting the spine with great muscle tone goes a long way. A study found dogs that exercised for more than 1 h per day, that were considered highly or moderately active by their owners, and those that showed at dog shows were at decreased odds of IVDD. [3].

8. Don't let your Dachie rough house with larger/stronger dogs unless they're your own and you take full accountability for outcomes.

It's a good idea to have your Vet check them out to see if they need pain management, also consider supplements like Antinol Australia.

Throwing toys or treats into the sun's glare which the dog misses is often the first thing pet parents notice when it comes to sight deficiencies.

☀️ 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴
Check diet, can you afford to feed a higher-quality diet with high-quality protein sources? Raw feeders may like to consider lightly cooked meals as these are easier to digest in older dogs.

Is your dog getting enough exercise? If they're in pain, speak to your Vet about pain management and if your budget allows, check our hydrotherapy.

☀️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲
This is an indicator of pain and we recommend you have your dog assessed with your Vet. Protect your dog from being knocked and feeling insecure around younger/more active dogs.

As senses start to fade, your dog may get insecure. Dogs who were never bothered about storms may now get upset. Dogs not feeling at their best may ask to spend more time with you.

Finding poo nuggets in their bed can be a sign of a degenerative disease related to mobility - be sure to mention it to your Vet.

☀️ 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻

In some older dogs, their nails can start to grow fast. Old dogs need short nails so they can maintain good posture to reduce pain.

Getting old is tiring but be sure to speak to your Vet as it could be an underlying condition such as thyroid disease.

☀️ 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁
This can be an indication that their digestive system isn't functioning great anymore, they can benefit from a digestive enzyme and raw-fed dogs can benefit from a lightly cooked diet.

☀️ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗲
Can be related to underlying conditions, be sure to mention it to your Vet.

☀️ 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵
Check for any cracked or broken teeth. Bad breath can also be related to underlying conditions - see your Vet.

☀️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱
A rounded back, elbows and knees pointed away from their body, standing with their back feet under their body can be signs pain is present.

🩺 Having a full blood panel run 1-2 times per year if budget allows will often allow you to get on top of medical conditions before they get out of control.
