Twenty years ago today, the world changed, resulting in terrible loss of life, for decades to come.
Amidst the unimaginable horrors and heart breaking sadness of that particular day, we heard stories of the amazing Guide Dogs who helped their visually impaired owners make it out of the building safely, of dogs who searched tirelessly through the rubble for hours on end, bruising and cutting their feet but never, ever stopping. Their handlers even had to set up "mock finds" when the dogs became discouraged at not being able to find anyone alive.
Just the presence of the dogs, a little stroke on their tired, furry heads, kept the rescuers going in a hellish and dire situation -
“The search and rescue dogs didn’t rescue any people from the pile,” he said. “But I think they somewhat rescued the people who were searching.”
