Here are a few charts that everyone should have saved into their phones. One chart shows how to do a basic health assessment on a goat. There is also a chart on how to check and score a goats Famacha (inner lower eyelid mucous membrane) and what action needs to be taken depending on what your goats famacha colour score is. I have also added a few other charts. I have also added a photo of something that is very handy to have in your fridge/goat medical kit. It’s injectable B-Complex which will give a goat a quick boost in the
B vitamins and help them in their recovery of any illness. Also it’s good to have a probiotic suitable for goats on hand in your fridge incase of scourers/diahhria and to be given after a course of antibiotics has been finished.

Ivy and Penny tonight here in our “Hoof Hospital 🏥 “. When they arrived and even up until a week ago their gums and tongue were white and also their Famacha’s were white/pale grey colour as well so both were dangerously Anaemic. Good to see tonight that they have some colour back in their gums and tongue coming back to a healthier pink colour. Was unable to check their Famacha (inner lower eye lid mucous membrane) as I need Emma to hold them while I check and she had already gone back inside so will check those tomorrow when I clean up their yard etc. Started them on Goat Pellets this week as I didn’t want to start them straight away and too soon with how underweight they were and possibly cause stomach issues (Bloat or Scourers/Diahhria) with having too much too soon so they have been on just prime Lucern hay and Oaten hay up until this week. I started them on a small amount of pellets for now to gradually introduce the pellets to their diet without upsetting their tummies. They LOVE the pellets and hoe into them like they’re starving to death, which they almost were, especially Penny before coming here 2 weeks ago. Ivy loves our attention as you can see in the video. Penny enjoys a good scratch now after being timid and scared for the first 4 days here. PS: They only had 1 piece of bread each as I had some stale bread so I thought 1 piece each for a treat for everyone.

Tonight in our little Hoof Hospital 🏥 with patients Ivy & Little Penny who are rescues that have been neglected in every way for god knows how long. Both have had their overgrown hooves trimmed. Ivy’s hoof lameness issue has healed after 4 days of treatment and is no longer lame at all so that’s awesome for her. Little Penny’s growth between the toes/claws of her rear hoof is half the size of what it was and is healing well, no longer tender to touch after 4 days of treatment, however she still has another issue with her hoof that is still being treated. Little Penny is awfully undernourished and skinny and both of them are enjoying having unlimited access to prime Lucern hay, oaten hay and a grassy/lucern mix along with veggies and fruits for treats. Both have been treated with antibiotics, pain meds, de-wormed and probiotics. They are also enjoying the company, love, attention and cuddles given here.

A friend got a bunch of new goats that were obviously neglected wherever they came from. I went out to trim all the new arrivals and bought these 2 girls home who are lame with not only overgrown neglected hooves but also a bad case of hoof scald and found maggots in the hoof too causing pain and lameness and one with some kind of wound between the two toes/claws causing her pain and lameness. They have Lice too so have powdered them thoroughly with Pestene which thankfully I already a full container of. So I bought them home to the Hoof Hospital until they’re all trimmed and their hoof scald and the wound has healed and they can get around without pain and lameness. They had no names so we have called the bigger one with one & half horns Ivy and the smaller one Penny. I have already partially trimmed the back hooves they are lame on and will finish the other hooves tomorrow. They are in my little sick bay/hospital yard (was the Lambs yard) that I keep fenced off from Maggie and Honey so I always have a place for the occasional visitor that needs my help as I have had a few here in the past. They have both had a shot of antibiotics and pain meds tonight when they arrived along with some prime Lucern hay and Oaten hay, also some Apple and Banana before their injections.

Today we went out to trim 6 gorgeous and very sweet sheep. 1 Dorper ewe, 4 Baby Doll ewes and 1 Baby Doll ram. They all had cute names but I can’t remember their names now 🤦‍♀️ and they didn’t make too much of a fuss, a little fuss here and there but nothing bad enough to make the job difficult, they were pretty good. Baby Doll sheep 🐑 are such chunky, heavy and strong sheep who have adorable faces that I think makes them look like a Teddy Bear 🧸, they should be called Teddy Bear Sheep. I have attached two photos of 4 of the 6 gorgeous girls waiting to be trimmed when I arrived.

This is a photo of a good hoof that I did a couple of weeks ago for a regular client. The hoof was just a little overgrown and as you can see came up looking good with an easy trim. This same goat, even though he had 3 hooves that were only overgrown, he had 1 hoof that he was lame on as it was full of hoof rot. Other than with my own goats who have good healthy hooves as I keep up to date with their trimming and they have a healthy diet that helps to keep their hooves healthy, 80% of the time I am working with hooves that are very overgrown and/or full of hoof rot and the goat/s lame with the pain. It’s nice when I get an easy job that just needs a good trim and then all is good.

Had an afternoon out trimming 4 Goats today. We met and trimmed Tommy who is a sweet and affectionate 2 yr old Miniature goat, Dicky who is a shy but curious nearly 2 yr old Miniature goat and Peppe la pew & Paulie who are two cute and sweet 8 1/2 month old Nigerian dwarfs.

Thought I would share some photos of my 2 Does (Maggie Mayhem & Honey) and how hard a life they lead 😂
Maggie & Honey have the same Boer Father but different Mummas. Maggie’s Mum is a Nubian cross and Honeys Mum is some sort of Mini breed. These 2 sweet girls are BFF’s and absolutely love and adore each other. They can’t be separated or the other will run around screaming and fretting. If one has to go to the Vet or anywhere else the other has to go too. They go everywhere together. They are like 2 peas in a pod. There’s only 1 week age difference between them and when they’re not lazing around on their Lounge in their shelter area you’ll find them soaking up the sun lazing on the mattress they have out in their yard or running a muck playing on their playground equipment.

Toshi was going to go home today as he is walking around well and showing no more signs of lameness or pain and his hoof rot responded really well and quickly to my treatment routine, however it started raining here this morning so Toshi will spend at least another night here with us so I don’t send him home to wet muddy ground which will not be good for his almost fully healed hoof rot. Even when it rains my place doesn’t get muddy like his own home does in certain areas. Here Toshi is enjoying an afternoon snack of: Pumpkin, Zucchini, Apple, Banana, Mango and a sprinkling of rolled oats (the kind you use to make porridge/oatmeal.) All our visitor Goats are spoilt in every way and treated as if they were mine while they’re here and of course my 3 Goats are spoilt as well. I do get attached to the visitor goats but I know I will continue to see them on my trimming rounds.

After 3 1/2 weeks here in my care for severe hoof Rot and hoof scald causing severe lameness Lucky is looking and feeling a million bucks. I’ve just had a new arrival come today for the same issues who I’ll get some hoof pics and other pics of to post later. Loving how well Lucky is looking and feeling now.

Last weekend I had a job to trim 3 goats. The following photos are of the condition these 3 goats hooves were in. All of the goats were lame with very overgrown hooves which made for the perfect environment for major hoof rot to develop and thrive in most of the hooves. I was unable to get after trimming photos (other than one hoof) as the goats were quite difficult to handle and stressed about having their hooves trimmed so after I finished trimming I didn’t want to add anymore time to their stress by taking after trimming photos.
It’s SO important to keep on top of your goats and sheep hoof care and keep up to date on having their hooves trimmed.

I’ll have some better updated videos and photos tomorrow of Lucky the goat who came to me with severe hoof rot in his front left and back left hooves causing major lameness and pain for the little guy. His hooves have improved so much that he’s up and about running around and playing with my other 2 goats. His general health has also improved and his spirit/mood has lifted a lot from a sad little goat who would lay around most of the time to avoid having to try and stand and weight bear on his very sore hooves which had him in major pain 24/7 to a playful, cheeky, talkative little Wether. I’ve added a few quick photos here to show how much fun Lucky is having with my 2 little Does now that he is pain free and able to walk. Remembering (you can see the video of his arrival and how lame and sore he was further down the page) 1 week ago when he first came to me he could barely stand let alone walk and he couldn’t put any weight on front left hoof or his back left hoof and now here he is rearing up and putting full weight on that back left hoof. These photos were taken 3-4 days after his arrival. Better update photos and videos coming tomorrow.

Today was all about the babies.
2 Kids and 6 Lambs having their first trims. They were all very well behaved and just sat happily in their owners lap while I trimmed. Starting a good hoof care regime while they’re young and keeping on top of any trimming needed can help prevent hoof problems like Hoof Rot and lameness. It also makes it a lot easier for when they are older, bigger, heavier and stronger as they’ve become accustomed to having their hooves worked on from a young age.

This is the same Goat as the previous post who has the overgrown hind hooves. Half way through trimming one of this Goats front hooves I found severe hoof rot in one side where the sole of the hoof has rotted away and only hoof wall is left, leaving a huge hole. This hoof will need gradual regular trimming along side daily cleaning and treatment to kill the bacteria in the hoof rot and create a healthy environment for the hoof to repair.

Here we have a before and after of the first trim of a Goat with very overgrown hind hooves. Goats, like horses need their hooves trimmed regularly every 6-8 weeks, depending on the Goat and the environment that the Goat lives in.
