As always, excellent information from The Pet Girl!

๐Ÿ˜… I can not tell you how many times over the past 5 weeks a random member of the public has stopped me to inform me that my puppy is not fully vaccinated. I mean, I book the appointments, so really youโ€™d think I should know ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ˜ Let me tell you why I donโ€™t really care.

๐Ÿง  A puppyโ€™s first critical learning window is from the age of 3-16 weeks. During this time, they are making rapid and lasting associations between themselves and the big wide world around them.

It is vitally important that we expose our puppy to a variety of novel sights/sounds/situations within this window of development in a fun and positive manner.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ For puppies that have negative experiences at this age, the lesson learnt will most likely be permanent and have an impact on future behaviour.

โžก๏ธ The best way to create confidence and avoid teaching your puppy to be overly excited by everyone around them, is to practice indirect exposure.

๐Ÿ‘€ This means going places where they can watch people and other dogs without meeting them face to face.

โœ… As they watch the things going on around them you should be marking and rewarding them for calm behaviour.

๐ŸŽˆ The best experiences involve brief positive exposure to something new - sound/place/sight/sensation etc.

๐Ÿ  You donโ€™t always have to leave your house to practice positive exposure.

๐Ÿ’กYou can set up a puppy safe obstacle in your backyard.

๐ŸŽถ Play the soundproof puppy app during play and/or meal times.

๐Ÿ•ต๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธHave a friend or family member dress up in something strange.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ Youโ€™re only limited to your imagination, but remember to keep these experiences brief and positive.

๐ŸŽฅ I have shared a stack of Maggieโ€™s exposure experiences.

๐Ÿ˜ฌ At all of the places we have gone, my puppy was not riddled with canine cough or parvovirus.

๐Ÿฆ  One of the main reasons people avoid taking their puppy out until it has had its final vaccinations, is due to the fear that the puppy will contract a deadly disease.

๐Ÿ’‰ Donโ€™t get me wrong, disease prevention should be a serious consideration, but when we act with common sense these risks can be managed.

โœ…

Your vet will be the one that is on top of outbreaks in your area. Ask them directly if they know of any suburbs that are best avoided at that time.

โœ…

The dog park is an obvious one, but many public parks and ovals are probably being regularly used by dog owners. Depending on the local conditions, parvovirus can live in soiled areas for anywhere from a few months to a year.

โœ…

Ensure your puppy receives the appropriate vaccinations at the right times for their development. If unsure, consult with your vet.

โœ…

Your puppy can still have valuable experiences from your arms. If you are out with your puppy and unsure whether it is safe, carry them.

๐Ÿค’ While physical health may seem a more immediate concern for our puppies, we cannot forget that long term behaviour problems can also wind up having deadly consequences for some dogs.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ Early positive exposure training during a puppyโ€™s critical period is very important for their developing minds and future behaviour.

The word socialisation gets thrown around a lot when talking about puppies.

๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ• For many pet owners it conjures images of dogs playing with other dogs. For this reason I generally refer to early critical training as positive exposure experiences instead.

๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ In all the places we visited, not once did I encourage Maggie to interact with other random dogs we encountered.

๐Ÿฉ She has only ever met familiar dogs that we know and can control.

๐Ÿค• Not only are there big risks for disease transmission from dog to dog, but there is also the potential that your puppy could have a negative social experience.

๐Ÿ  When your puppy first comes home there should be a heavy focus on creating new and novel experiences, including taking them to places where they can safely view the world and all of the weird and wonderful things in it.

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ Bolstering our dogs genetically inherited traits with good training is super important.

๐Ÿง  We should be considering the effects of nature and nurture, rather than constantly asking ourselves which of the two is more important.

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ Giving your puppy a variety of early positive experiences gives them the best chance at developing into an adult that will have the kind of mental resiliency to navigate the human world with minimal stress.

Crate Training;
Here at Bordergemz we believe Crate Training is super important. Why?
Well lets think about some of the places or situations where your dog may need to be in or utilise one,
-Before and after surgery at the vet
-When required for post injury care
-At the grooming salon, waiting their turn or waiting for you to collect
-In a state of emergency like floods or fire
-At dog sports, shows, trials and seminars
-During car travel
-On Domestic or Interstate flights
-For his/her own safety
Crates can also be used in the case of going on holidays where the accommodation you are booked into require it and for when you go to a camping ground. It can be great for toilet training too as dogs donโ€™t like to soil their โ€˜denโ€™ and therefore learn to hold on. We like to familiarise our litters to a crate while still in our care. We use a crate to travel our pups in on the adventures we take them on and to vet appointments. We will use crates to separate them at feed times should it be required and sometimes they get to sleep in a crate at nighttime too. This is a snippet of one of our pups from our last litter. He is 10 weeks of age in this video and 100% relaxed about the time he needed to be in a crate on a journey.

Most people are making an attempt to make sure their puppy is well socialised. However often this word can be misinterpreted and lead to a puppy being over socialised in some areas, and under socialised in others.

Meeting a lot of people and dogs in order to create a "social" dog.

Careful exposure to the big wide world with a focus on creating positive experiences that make your dog feel confident in the environment or in you as their guide.

๐Ÿ‘‰๏ธ Sociability (meaning a tolerance of and interest in other individuals in a social context) has a huge genetic component. For sure, experiences will shape your dogs sociability, but this is a complex topic, and by providing lots of social interactions with little to not control of the outcome at an early age will in no way guarantee the outcome that you want.

You should be seeking out new experiences for your dog to have all the way through their puppy phase. Exactly what these experiences are will be dog dependent.

Uncertainty in the initial stages is fine. But you want to avoid allowing your puppy to feel over whelmed or fearful.

Interest in the environment is not a bad thing. But part of your outings should be about your puppy focussing their attention on you and finding value in what you can provide.

Another fantastic post from The Pet Girl, good solid advice!

You might hear that engaging your dog in play such as chase, fetch, tug and wrestling will teach your dog some bad habits and turn them into predators.

๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ The โ€˜logicโ€™ is that the dog is unable to understand context, and as a result may take to pulling washing off the line, chasing cats, or children etc or, the age old thought, it will make them dominant.

๐Ÿ˜ณ Hahah I know. Sounds ridiculous. BUT there are still well known trainers actually teaching people this and if you are new to training dogs, these all sound pretty convincing.

โ˜๐Ÿฝ So, firstly, Iโ€™d go so far as to say that play is ESSENTIAL in a well adjusted dogโ€™s life. Play doesnโ€™t only exist in the realm of toys, it can mean many things. But for the purposes of this post, letโ€™s talk about ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜†.

๐Ÿ”‘ The key is to ensure the dog understands their play window of opportunity.

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ Structured play is a fantastic reward system, it builds confidence and relationship and it is a seriously awesome outlet for conflict as it taps into a dogโ€™s natural desires and drives.

The biggest challenge for a lot of dogs is that they usually arenโ€™t quite sure when the game is over. To help your dog understand context, follow these simple guidelines:

โœ… Always initiate with a cue such as โ€œare you ready?โ€ or โ€œdo you want to play?โ€ This makes it very clear to your dog when the opportunity to play in this manner is on the table, rather than leaving it up to them to decide how and when play starts.

โœ… Have a clearly defined area on the toy that is the target bite zone. If at any stage your dog starts bringing the game to close to your hands, the play stops.

โœ… Teach a give command so that you can get the toy off your dog without creating bad habits. You can even do a trade.

โœ… Have an end cue such as โ€œfinishedโ€ to let your dog know when the game is over.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ Some dogs will try to push for the game to continue if they feel they have not yet had enough. An end cue lets us teach the dog that the game is done, and they need to settle down. Without it, the dog will often continue to pester you in the hopes the play will resume. I typically follow a play session with a KONG to bring my dogโ€™s arousal back to base camp.

๐Ÿ‡ You might be asking, does playing with my dog encourage their predatory drive and will this be redirected onto inappropriate things like cats or children?

โŒ The answer is no. If your dog has a strong inclination to tap into their predatory drive, suppressing this wonโ€™t leave you in a better position. In fact, you may start to see this behaviour manifest in other inappropriate ways; such as reactivity.

๐Ÿ’ซ The goal is to find appropriate ways to satisfy and biologically fulfill your dog; not suppress and attempt to shut down their natural hardwired behaviours.

๐Ÿ’› So please, go out, play with your dogs. Donโ€™t believe old school, outdated information. When we know better, we do better.

Good information

Good information

Have you noticed that your puppy or young dog wakes up and is noticeably less confident than the day before? Perhaps something they have been okay with, is suddenly super spooky?

๐Ÿ• A โ€œfear periodโ€ is a normal part of puppy development. The first fear imprint period generally occurs between 8-11 weeks and then between 6-14 months there can be further periodic fear periods.

๐Ÿšซ Unfortunately, fear periods can vary from dog to dog in timing, length and intensity, which is why they are super unpredictable and often come without warning.

โžก๏ธ Typical behaviour may include being skittish, reacting to objects that have never caused an issue before, uncertainty, worrying about normal routines, refusing to move, being noticeable distressed.

The first thing you can do is be super mindful during this time and not be unrealistic about your expectations of your dog.

โœ… Set your dog up for success and avoid unpredictable situations during this time.

โ˜๐ŸฝBuild confidence to novelty early, so your puppy seeks it out rather than be startled by it.

๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฝ Donโ€™t over do it if your dog is afraid of something. Help them through it by marking and rewarding small amounts of confidence and leaving on a high.

๐ŸŽ“ Attend a kick arse puppy school that teaches you how to navigate your puppyโ€™s critical period of development with a focus on confidence building.

โžก๏ธ If in doubt, hire a professional trainer to assist with your puppyโ€™s development. Itโ€™s important to preserve your puppyโ€™s confidence at all costs during this critical time.

๐Ÿฅธ Did your puppy have an odd reaction to something during a fear period?

๐Ÿ˜ณ V***n did. She decided a little old Asian man, wearing a sombrero, minding his own business on Burleigh Hill, during the peak time where everyone was enjoying the sunset, was a lovely time to alert everyone that he was there and let me know that she was not okay with it. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
