Steve is doing better each day 👍🙏

We are presently working hard at finding a corporate sponsor or Angel donor to raise $450k to help us save our refuge and continue our work. We need a corporation or individual with philanthropuc interest to help us buy this land, the wildlife facilities we have built and our home and protect it into the future. The facilities on this land are imperative for us to keep up the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife we get called to assist in the local area. A lucky outcome for this young Magpie today. Hit on the Princes Highway and left for dead on the side of the road, my husband turned around, scooped him up. He drove back to our property, where I could give him some quiet rest to get through the shock in an intensive care unit. After 3 hours, he was feeling better and was up on his feet. But one wing showed a sign of an injury. Off the South Nowra Veterinary Hospital I was again.

A fractured radius, has a good prognosis was found. Then his wing was supported with a splint and the young one which is probably last year’s fledgling, will go into care with a bird carer while the fracture heals. Best wishes to the bird for the weeks ahead in care now with a wildlife rescue south coast wildlife carer 👍🙏😎

After having a rest overnight, it was time to go the Vet for assessment. Veterinarian, Daniel, of The South Nowra veterinary hospital was surprised to find healing fractures in both the fore flippers of the Green sea turtle rescued yesterday. Fractures are in both his foreflippers and have healed a great deal already. Thankfully, he has shown he has a great deal of movement in the bones, and the healing process, while not perfect, has left the turtle with a rest chance of survival.

Now for a treatment plan from the Veterinary team, to ensure there is no osteomyelitis setting in and further, healing is assisted with good husbandry and nutrition. Time for a well deserved rest for this gentle and lucky sea turtle. 🙏👍

Assessment revealed all the fishing line has cut deeply into the skin of nothe foreflippers. The swelling is marked. This poor beautiful creature is so lucky that the kind humans found him when they did!!

A big day. A call came in for the injured Green sea turtle we had reported last Friday. Another two men out fishing had seen it and decided to bring it in to their boat and seek help after they saw fishing line entangled around its body.
I drove down to Ulladulla to meet them and bring the sea turtle back to refuge for assessment.
I did a qucik Venemous snake call and removed a little red bellied black snake from a concerned resident’s outdoor area on my way back.

I have been working with the sea turtle ever since while Phil feeds all the wombats and Steve. Never a dull moment 🙏🤞❤️

The reason that you should NEVER feed bread to the Ducks!! I will always try to remind people as nicely as I can. 🙏😎

As the weather begins to get nicer and you take your kiddos to a local pond or lake to feed the ducks and geese, please keep this bit of info in mind.🙏🙏🙏
Another FYI
Feeding bread causes permanent damage to ducks and geese. They develop angel wing. They can not migrate or fly to avoid predators. PLEASE DO NOT FEED BREAD to ducks and geese. Cracked corn, corn, peas, mealworms, romaine lettuce, watermelon, grapes CUT into pieces, cantaloupe……are a few good options!

A pilot, a vet and a section ranger of Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park took to the sky on Sunday morning in search of buffalo for a disease testing operation (more info on this soon). While looking for buffalo, they came across a new poached rhino carcass and a couple of 100m away they spotted a small calf on its own (weighing 105kg and estimated to be around 6 weeks old).
They responded immediately. Dr Rowan Leeming immobilized the small calf and they placed it on the back seat of the helicopter (flown by Orton Bosman of Heligistix). The calf was rushed to the Zululand Rhino Orphanage where he was given a drip to rehydrate him and rhino plasma to strengthen his immune system. The experienced team at the orphanage will do everything they can to ensure his recovery and then his well-being until he is old enough to be released back into the wild.
African Wildlife Vets with support from Blankets for Baby Rhinos covered the emergency helicopter flight from Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park to the orphanage.”

It is amazing to watch how babies bond, and also adorable 🥰 This is Geoff, Gypsy and Spaghetti. Spaghetti is still smaller and gets spoilt with more bottles of milk. The other two are just such big chunky ones ❤️👍

So sad, the reality is the protection of our wildlife is all political. The solutions are there. It’s just got to be the most impressive thing to the public, for governments to support the actions required. 😢

Labor will not try to negotiate the passage of the new laws, which would create a new federal environment protection agency, in the coming sitting fortnight.

We woke to the best news! The 25kg male Eastern grey kangaroo that we rescued from the Princes Highway last night was up. He was standing, looking for a way to escape his new confinement this morning. He has a lot of swelling in his face, from the wounds obviously sustained by a part of the vehicle that hit his face. What a lucky boy to be alive and not sustained worse. These are the miracle ones. We shall call him Steve, from near Mortimer rd ( I recall an Australian footballer, Steve Mortimer many moons ago ).

Steve is going to stay to help him heal from his ordeal. He lost a lot of blood and is very sore. He became acquainted with me today and while I won’t be getting too close for comfort, he is letting me go in and be with him at least. Tonight, he ate some grass I was offering him. That made my night! What a great day, seeing the progress of this very lucky male Kangaroo in care with us now for awhile. Bless him 🥰🙏❤️

Well that was an eventful day and night. We had just eaten tea thankfully, when the phone rang. A kangaroo was hit by a car and sitting injured on the side of the Highway. Phil jumped in his car first, then called for back up. We were there in a jiffy. The catch and restraint was not easy, as the 25kg male has full use of his legs. But at least there hardly any cars.
Once brought into care and a proper assessment could be done, we found he had sustained soem quite nasty, deep cuts to his face. With significant swelling, he may be in trouble. With pain relief and stopping the bleeding, we will see if he survives the night. All fingers crossed for this beautiful boy 😢

No relaxing here on a Sunday morning! First thing this morning, Phil was off to Ulladulla to rescue a poor adult wombat that has found itself in a yard of a hole in a suburban street. Hopefully she knows her way around when she get back to the nearets suitable environment. Thankfully, another WRSC carer has met him and will take him to the habitat he calls home. 🏠
Sadly, urban sprawl continues to be a major concern for our coastal wildlife communities.

We drove to Jamberoo last night, and Phil helped a fellow carer try to capture a small orphaned wombat seen going into a burrow near a busy road. This morning, he is off to find another tiny orphaned baby wombat, seen by the bush Princes Highway. It is so sad just how many lose their Mothers. And these are just the ones that are seen! 😭
