Ever had a horse ‘act up’ and brush it off as just being ‘naughty’? It happens more often than you might think…

When horses display behaviors like bucking, girthiness, being hard to catch, or biting etc., they're often labeled as 'naughty' or 'disrespectful.' Often these unwanted behaviours are their way of communicating something important, and they often begin with subtle signs that slowly escalate to the horse showing louder behaviours because we’ve missed what they were initially trying to communicate. Every behaviour has a reason from that tail swish stepping into canter to that big buck that knocked you to the ground! Instead of dismissing them, let's explore what your horse might be trying to say. 🐴💬

From discomfort due to ill-fitting tack, frustrations in communication to underlying health issues, there could be various reasons behind your horse's actions. Rather than resorting to quick fixes or harsher training methods, let's take the time to understand and address the root cause.

By tuning in to your horse's subtle behaviours, we can work together to find gentle, effective solutions that help create a deeper understanding and connection between you and your horse. ✨

✨ Slow it right down… 🐌

When working with your horse take little steps, accept what your horse presents with you on the day and enjoy the process 💕

Try and enter sessions with less expectation, which will help reduce frustration and allow you to be more present with your horse. Work with the horse that’s in front of you today, remember to listen to what they are telling you, don’t expect big changes in one session, reward the small tries, take your time, have breaks and you’ll find you’ll get big progress in the long run! 🐴

Lately, I've noticed numerous social media posts advocating various gadgets to manage a horse's posture, from keeping their head down to aid them to feel more “in control”. 🙃

It's essential to recognize that every behavior a horse displays has a purpose, whether it's due to human error, discomfort, or pain – your horse is trying to communicate something. By resorting to gadgets, we risk masking these messages... Instead, let's listen to our horses, evaluate our actions, and prioritize their well-being and health!✨

Rather using tie downs, lunging gadgets, or side reins to force a horse into a specific posture, let's explore in-hand work, using the cavesson, and at liberty! These methods not only help in creating healthier movement for our horses but also help create better communication, confidence and connection with our horses. 🐴

Incorporating in-hand work with the cavesson and liberty exercises can help develop tremendous strength, balance, posture and coordination while they also transfer to your ridden work! 💕 Remember, dressage is for the horse not the other way around!

If you're interested in understanding your horse better, consider scheduling a session with us and your horse. 🐴

✨Food for thought ✨

Positive reinforcement and using food rewards does not create ‘disrespectful’, ‘dominant’, ‘pushy’ or ‘aggressive’ horses…

Often these labels have pushed people away from starting with positive reinforcement or give up trying ☹️

But, once you have an understanding on a horse’s basic needs, horse behaviour and how horses learn - you can set your horse up for success, so you and your horse can work together safely, confidently and comfortably in harmony! 💕

Set you and your horse up for success by using low value rewards, using a clicker/marker signal, teaching your horse to be relaxed around food, making sure your horse isn’t hungry and always listen to your horse (every behaviour has a reason)! 🐴
