We harvested the hive for the first time in March. And then the second hive in April. The flavour profiles between the two hives are distinct. First is floral with a little citrus tang and the second tastes less floral with slight caramel finish.
Appreciating the hard work from both hives this winter. I have been making some wonderful treats and replacing the sugar with this delicious honey. An absolute delight in all the recipes thus far.

After eating zucchini, patty pan squash and tromboncino for the last few weeks - so many ways used to cook and serve them - I am really looking forward to the first pumpkins of the year. Can't wait for a flavour change.

This is also the first time we have tried growing a local variety, Jarrahdale Blue. The go-to for us has been Japanese/Kent and have grown very well in the past.

Most of the pumpkin seeds will go to the chooks for treats, but some will be kept for next year's crop and the rest are getting dried and roasted.

I'm looking forward to making pumpkin scones and bread again.

The Lebanese cucumbers gave a solid effort so far this summer. Harvested some to make whole dill pickles and burger pickles.

The dill is growing like a w**d amongst the vege beds and so is the corriander. They got thrown into the pickling liqueur too.

Now the hard part, waiting for the first taste test in a few weeks. But for now, the chickens and quails get a treat from the kitchen prep in the form of cucumber skins, over-matured fruits and excess herbs.

Been busy making use of the fruit glut from local (close enough) orchards. Unseasonal rain has made good cherries a little scarce but we found some lovely ones at Irymple.

Also made spiced peach jam from a tray of lovely Princess Time peaches we picked up from Spring Hill Orchard. Opened a jar yesterday and wow. The flavour of the peaches truly sing! It was spectacular with fresh, homemade cobb for light dinner last night.

Repurposing some, slightly warped, old frames. Building a coop and run for the chickens. They've outgrown their temporary holding. Slow going but there is progress. Even the rams couldn't resist taking a look.

It's peeper season again. These little ones were 18th Sept hatch.
Mixed colour variations - English white, Pharoah, Italian/Fawn/Manchurian, most coming through with dilute blue.
Some chicks are resembling Oz Snowy at first glance (but that's just the blue dilute effect on the I/F/M colouration).

Hard to believe these lovely chooks were fuzzy black chicks back in April.

Plymoths are a truly lovely chicken. Calm, sweet and curious. Our rooster, Chanteclair, is a sook. They are slow growing. And quite a large bird. These ladies are yet to lay their first egg but they can lay throughout winter unlike other rapid growing, high frequency egg producers like ISA browns.

Their coop is being built and they will hopefully get to move in soon. Once the paddocks are fenced, they will be free-ranging and have plenty of room compared to the cramped quarters now.

Excited to have honey and a working hive pollinate the fruit trees and vege patch.

The cayuga ducks started laying a few weeks ago. The ladies have also had a housing upgrade and are living their best life as w**ds/slug&snail control in the vege garden.
Hopefully we will be able to find their eggs in amongst the greens before the ravens do.

Visited by a tenacious fox. Some feathers pulled and some unfortunate toes missing.
The flocks (sheep and various birds) got lucky.

Some handsome fellows, these little lads are from March 25th hatch.
