…Draxy be creepin on my session with little Miss Jewel this afternoon! 😂💎☺️
Untouchable Freyja - A rescue story. This here is a great example of why you will never convince me that properly applied positive reinforcement training is a bad idea for horses. With the craziness of Christmas + a new year I forgot to share this little ladies story with u all…it’s a pretty special one. This is Freya. Approx 8yr old Arab mare. Freya came to me for 4 short weeks at the end of last year before the holidays set in. She had been rescued from the Laidley sales about 2yrs previous + was unable to be caught without throwing a rope + as such had very minimal handing. She carried an incredible amount of tension around people, with a super high freeze + flight drive + many anxiety triggers. Even though Freyjas lovely, open minded + compassionate owner had some small wins with her in the few years since she rescued her, + even with some help from other trainers they just kept coming up against Freyjas very large, well established “walls”. So, with a focus on relaxation + a combination of positive (food reinforcement) + negative reinforcement (pressure/release - approach/retreat etc) techniques we re-wired some of Freyjas reactive patterns + successfully changed her idea of humans + pressure…from being a threat + something to fear, to being an opportunity instead. By reading Freyjas nervous system responses, allowing space for release + relaxation, + by avoiding stimulus stacking (ie; not introducing more stimulus or requests until her nervous system had reset) the less likely she was to reach + get stuck in her extreme nervous system responses…the result…we started to grow her “window of tolerance” to help her become more “thoughtful” + resilient. Freyjas owners goal has always been for her to just be happier within herself + around people, + to eventually be able to handle her willingly + calmly for routine maintenance - catching, worming, grooming, feet, veterinary procedures if required etc. I will never forget the moment Viki was ab
Goodbye 2022 👋🏼 Hellooooo 2023 🤗
.
Yeah…that was definitely a tough one!…even so, I’ve so much gratitude to all of you who have loved me, cared for me, believed in me, supported me, helped me, welcomed me, came to my workshops, took lessons, entrusted me with your precious fur kids, held space for me through my tears, heartbreaks + physical injuries, who asked me how I was + wanted to actually hear the unfiltered answer (ya’ll know who u are!!) 🙏🏼❤️🙌🏼 xx
.
My world really is so full of so much good, + as super tough + ‘up + down’ these past 12 months may have been I honestly feel so grateful for it all! I’ve landed on my feet (again) + I’m exactly where I need to be!

✨ Curiosity + Confidence ✨
✨ Curiosity + Confidence ✨
.
We REALLY don’t need to be FLOODING our horses in order to “desensitise” them
.
By using a process of SYSTEMATIC DESENSITISATION, by keeping our horses always UNDER THRESHOLD, + by encouraging + supporting CALM CURIOSITY we can actually end up laying a solid foundation for confidence + trust to grow,…all the whilst teaching our horse how to easily process + problem solve new objects + environments that they may encounter in the future
.
Instead of forcing your horse into a state of LEARNED HELPLESSNESS + having them “shut down”, you will have actually helped them learn how to manage + self regulate their own emotions + fear responses
.
Our horses emotions matter…anyone can flood a horse into compliance…but it takes patience, skill + thoughtfulness to produce a horse that is genuinely relaxed + happy with the process!
.
Featuring beautiful 4yr old warmblood gelding Hugo (yes another Hugo 😆). I’ve really enjoyed working with this quirky boy 🤗🐴
.
AFTER NOTE - the difference between SYSTEMATIC DESENSITISATION + FLOODING is that the stimulus (scary object) is only ever presented at a level that the horse doesn’t find frightening. This level is gradually increased as the horse’s confidence grows, all the while the horse remains UNDER THRESHOLD.
LEARNED HELPLESSNESS refers to the maladaptive passivity shown by animals (or people) following experience with uncontrollable or traumatic events

A rescue win!! 🙌🏼💗🐴 I am so, SO PROUD of this little guy + how far he has come during his short time here
.
Little Hugo here is 8yrs old (breed unknown though he is branded). Purchased from Laidley sales off the dogger truck I believe
.
He was rescued with no known history + a bunch of reactive behaviours. Lucky for Hugo his new mum is kind + empathetic + really just wanted the best for him…for him to be more comfortable within himself + with the world around him
.
Our goal with Hugo was to help him to become more calm, focused, confident + relaxed, whilst always keeping him under threshold + figuring out how much he already “knew” (or didn’t know for that matter). Hugos go to “defence mechanism” to any new or “scary” stimuli was avoidance + disassociation…he was definitely very apt at “checking out”!
.
With lots of slow repetitive work, time to help him learn how to problem solve without reverting back to old ingrained behaviour patterns, + by prioritising relationship over personal expectations + structured timelines, he has really started to come out of his shell + show us just how sweet + beautifully natured he really is. We even got going undersaddle too which was a huge win for all of us! 😊🙏🏼
.
We could assume a number of things about Hugos past + what he has or has not not been through. However I find that’s really not helpful to either the horse or to myself as a trainer. Shifting to a focus of progressive growth + learning, + dialling in on the specific behaviour the horse is offering up in any given moment is key to overcoming past traumas + rewiring old behaviour patterns
.
For me, true horsemanship is showing a horse that they are considered + secure in an environment that is empathetic, but that still has boundaries to keep everyone safe
.
I can’t wait to do some more work with this lovely (+ very lucky🍀) boy + his human down the track!!
.
“You can never rely on a horse that is educated by fear. There

🍃 Body awareness…
.
What is your body doing when u ride + how is it affecting your horse?
.
…”if get yourself right first, your horse will follow”…
.
For a lot of us riders our reins can tend to be our crutch…riding should not about controlling our horses with our reins…it should be about effective + clear communication via our seat + legs
.
Introducing yourself + your horse to bridleless riding can really fast track a deeper understanding of what your body is doing + why, + how this affects your horses way of going
.
Check out our most recent bunch of wonderful women taking their first steps towards deeper understanding + communication with their horses
.
We’ll done ladies!! Very proud of u all 🫶🏼🐴
